some early aspects to my interest in planes:
    1. Living near Luton Airport and able to kneel on a chair in the kitchen and watch the Monarch Britannias and pretty Courtline 111s & Tristars. My parents finally could afford a fridge when I was 4 and put it where the chair was….

    2. Pulling up in my parents car outside the main Channel Airways Hangar at Southend, and seeing my Grandad, coveralls over his suit, working on a 111 engine on a trolley, then taking us into his office where he had a row of Comet seats as his visitor’s chairs!

    3. After Channel Airways went bust, my Grandad was the last employee kept on by the administrators to dispose of the aircraft, I spent a memorable afternoon in a hangar in a 111, while they ran up the APU and did a system check, making both sets of stairs go up and down, a great playground for a 4 year old!

A Couple of Highlights for me:
    1. Early Greenham Commons, The F15 Dragging It’s tail, Plus the K97, Liberator, Connies, etc previously Mentioned (I was 5 in ’74!)

    2. The Food at Mildenhall! (Plus the YC14 & 15, SR71, etc)

    3. St Athan in the late ’70s, 4 Starfighter display, at the end 3 would do a slow flypast, whilst the 4th would do a screaming afterburner Flypast OVER the crowdline!

    4. Being on Cadet camp at Binbrook in ’87 for the Last of the Lightning Show, on the Friday the Tornado F3 arrived as a 5 sqn Lightning was recovering into the circuit…slow formation flypast, old & new, fast flypast….silence….2 dots in distance growing….Lightning arrives first stands on it’s tail and disappears, Tornado gives an ashmatic wheeze and tries to follow….The whole please erupts in cheers and tears…..

    5. ’88 Last Passing out Parade at Swinderby to get Lightning Flypast

    6. ’88 Finningley, Just completed Seargent Course of NCO Aircrew Training, given 9 ‘walking cones’ from Swinderby and a car park to fill!
Had OC 11sqn’s Daughter & Friend staying in my quarters :diablo: ….not for this forum!
Seeing TR1 Leave on the Monday…. sat 50 yds from threshold!

I saw something similar last week as I left the M25 at Jct23 (A1M) to the SE, I couldn’t take a detailed look (More pressing objects in front…) but it behaved like a weighted flag below a helicopter….except I couldn’t see a whirlybird above it?

I flew the SH**Chunk on many an occasion (apologies, that’s what we cadets called it).
My most memorable was on Summer camp at Binbrook (the week before the last of the Lightning show), I had completed my Flying Scholarship & PPL the year before, so when the pilot asked the immortal question “what do you want to do today?” I answered “Stalls & Spins!”

There was a pause, the pilot put the Chippie into a climb and said: “We don’t normally do that, they can be a bit tricky in the spin, so watch the Altimeter, and if we go below 3,000′ and are still spinning, bale out, I mean it, get out”

Oh Bu**er, I thought, what have I done?

It was fantatsic, of course, they spin properly, unlike the Cessna 150s that I had learnt on!

Our Corporate Jet is a Hawker 800, every time I am lucky enough to use it, I scratch my head as to why we gave the design away…same with the Jetstream

    I
Slightly off topic, but I can also confirm that the fuselage of Trident 3B G-AWZK safely arrived at the viewing park today. We are now waiting for the starboard wing and tail before reassembly commences.

One of my earliest Aircraft memories is a tour of the Trident Line at Hatfield in the early seventies (some destined for CAAC), My Grandfather had a couple on the Channel Airways fleet, along with a 748, Dove, Comets and 111s

I spoke to Tim Manna about his Seafire a couple of weeks ago, the main hold up is the supplied Aileron Cables were too long, but too short to chop and re-terminate. They have been waiting 16 weeks for replacements now, which has prevented the refitting of the wings, and hence missed it’s appointment with the Paint Shop in May…..
Apparently there were 3 different wing sizes fitted to Seafires (based on MK5 Spit), and it is very difficult to know which one you have until you get the parts and try to fit them…..

Didn’t the blackbird make an appearance at one of the Greenham Common shows of that Era?
Or am I thinking of Mildenhall?
My Main memeory is of a flypast on one afterburner with the rudders fully deflected…..

I seem to remember an F15 scraping it’s tail at GC around that time as well…

There are several more still flying, so the loss of one won’t matter that much will it ? And in any case it’s only an aero bus with four hair driers strapped to the wings, so hardly counts as hysteric 🙂

They’re not Hair dryers, they’re Abrahms Tank Engines, also used in the Chinook!
So next time you’re sat there in the cheap seats looking out at an engine nacelle (unless you’re in the row without a window!) wonder if it is 4 tanks or 2 chinooks flying in close formation!

I remember a Hastings coming into Luton Airport in the late Seventies, I think it was the last one in RAF Service?

I am buiding a 6′ span DC3 (Tony Nijhus plan), but still have a couple of foamies for flying away from the field, as well as a Hirobo XRB Helicopter for hovering around the lounge….

Had I known, I would have worked from home today (4 miles from Wyton) rather than traipsing down to Newbury…..

I remember when I was 14 (22 years ago!) cycling my Raleigh Grifter 😮 to Wyton from Royston to watch the Canberras, saw 4 vulcans practice the 60 second launch as well…what a day!

Perhaps Kennet Aviation might be interested in taking this one on?

I take my kids to Duxford Twice a year (5 & 2) they can see where Grandad’s daddy worked before/during the war (Propulsions Tech on 19 Sqn with Bader), the Ex Channel Airways Viscount that Grandad’s Daddy fixed (he was Technical Director of Channel Airways) and that Grandad put Baggage on to pay for his PPL.
They can also see the kind of Helicopter that Daddy used to hang out of (Wessex) but it is normally overshadowed by Thomas the Tank Engine’s Friend Harold (Whirlwind) parked next to it.
They love the diversity of the place, they love being able to touch/go on the planes, and they love seeing people work on them.
They also enjoy the various aircraft movements, small & large that are going on whilst there.
I took them to Old Warden recently, but they are not old enough to appreciate it yet
