On second thoughts this might be about the updated IFF transponders that was to be installed….

I hate when they just say “NATO” about everything.. there’s a lot of issues to address in the system and C2 right now 😮

The new Gripen Jas-planes can partially compensate for the lack of encrypted speech during the transition period. But the ability to battle can deteriorate, says Anders Silwer. – It is unfortunate that we have not been sufficiently clear, “he says.

Ok here is bad news for Gripen Fans in the MRCA. It is reported in Aviation Week’s Show News Day One that Dassault may block the Thales Radar proposed for Gripen NG in the MRCA as it would be competing against the Rafale.

    http://www.zinio.com/express3?issue=373189832

    Page 18

The Thales antenna is not selected for Gripen IN/NG.

    It’s bad reporting.

The array is brought in to demonstrate radar modes on the Gripen Demo project for mutual benefits to Thales and Saabs radar programs.

As has already been known for almost a year now.

It’s also interesting how the article completely failed to mention Selex which Saab has worked with for many years and has also offered their own products next to the cooperation.

    The AESA radar to be
trialled on the Demo aircraft will deliver
    invaluable integration data and operational
experience, but it will not be the final configuration
    for the Gripen NG.

    http://www.gripen.com/NR/rdonlyres/FCB6D4D6-8D7E-4824-B674-4B42B761A7F9/0/GripenNewsDemo_080414_final.pdf

But Peter Andersson does not want to speculate whether the collaboration with Thales will continue with the development of AESA radar for the next generation Gripen:

Our collaboration is for the Gripen demo. We will have to see what happens in the future.”

    http://www.saabgroup.com/en/MediaRelations/News/2008/saab_and_thales_develop_gripen_+radar.htm

S&AS is also offering an AESA sensor to equip Saab’s Gripen demonstrator aircraft, flight tests of which could start during 2008.

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2007/11/13/219315/italy-special-selex-targets-tranche-3-eurofighter-for-aesa-success.html

And then there’s Northrop Grumman.. or the option of building one themselves. The problem is that AESA in its current generation is not such a great leap forward which is why NORA and it’s M-AESA comes into the picture down the road. So this is about finding a intermediate partner and it’s obvious which one is the best and open for modifications until it has been tried and tested.

Another Gripen activity here concerns the radar for the Next Generation Gripen. Although Thales is Saab’s partner for the Gripen Demo program, the choice of a production radar is wide open. “Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Elbit, Selex – they all want to buy me lunch this week,” says Kemp.

Much of Gripens electronics is sourced from all over Europe. Now i cannot imagine a company giving better technology to Gripen than their national fighters. The F 35 meanwhile gets the cream of American tech, most of it is classified and inaccessible even to the partner nations. Its common sense to believe that the F 35 will have better avionics, atleast to start with.

No it’s not common sense. Because the development curve is different. It’s also going to take until the 2020s until the F-35 gets a electronic attack capability and much of the other feautues often marketed but not available for the early block versions. F-35 will initially be a JDAM bomber with a pair of AMRAAMs. That is the common sense.

Gripen NG builds with experience on already highly advanced Electronic warfare, Datalinks and a number of radar projects that will be followed by the latest technology, with high speed computers and databuses from the best suppliers in the world for a air force jet 2015+. It’s not like Lockheed is sitting there developing new computers and other systems for each new jet that rolls out the line. They source from sub-contractors just like Saab and if the development curve is different then so will the delivered capability be. Gripen 39C/D was for instance designed for an airforce 2006+ so they took the bold move to 100% digitalise the instrumental displays before anyone else. It’s all relevant for when the jet is about to enter service and what capability is planned for that first stage. Gripen NG will pack more capability by 2015 than F-35 by 2015.

And Sweden has no problems what so ever to get the best equipment from the US. We have agreements to work on R&D projects in the defense industry without political interferrence. This has enabled succesfull programs like EXCALIBUR grenades or the SAAB radars to LCS. Specially designed Raytheon AESAs to the Swedish research etc. We don’t even need to notify congress when we buy their weapons.

People who see this as a US vs Sweden thing is so very mistaken… Saab has US partners and they offer the best of what they got or Saab will find someone else. Which is why Eurojet was consulted and studied EJ200 for Gripen. GE decided to enter as a risk sharing partner and offered engines and people. Same with Rockwell-Collins, Honeywell etc. They are financial risk sharing partners. US companies betting on Gripen.

    😀

Gripen NG is designed and projected for airforces beyond 2015. While F-35 is delayed and designed for airforces beyond 2010. The avionics in Gripen NG is more modern and advanced than those in F-35 for many years before the F-35 is updated. And much of that is the reason for Saab selecting US suppliers that has more modern technology then when it was time to outfit the now delayed and over budget F-35. If you’re otoh not interested in national defense and CAS but instead look for a strike aircraft that need to hide to avoid enemy sensors just because it can’t fight then the F-35 is for you.

    Nice logotypes.

    http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3341/gripenpartnersfineb5.jpg

And wth… is it a free market ?

This design approach permeates the Gripen NG, says Kemp. Suppliers such as Honeywell and Rockwell were asked to provide their latest product and let Saab worry about integrating them, rather than devising tailor-made derivatives for the Gripen NG. To keep costs low, the NG may embrace the same pilot helmet used on the F-35.

LM claim 3 external fuel tanks on Gripen C to give 502 nm.

It will actually do more on internal fuel alone.

3 drop tanks adds twice the LM range. Yes, in AA config.

This briefing was used in Norway too. Their dumbarse media enjoyed it alot.

A US plane will be chosen due to politics. No point spending too much money on the competition.

But then again I think they should have sent at least one Rafale just for the aviation enthusiasts overthere. After all it’s an air show, not just a competition 🙁

    Nic

    X2

But Dassault will have plenty of time to send jets before that MMRCA is done if ever.. to Aero India 2011 for instance.

Is this the good news ?

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 could face cuts as Pentagon reconsiders budget

Reductions in Lockheed Martin Corp.’s F-35 fighter are among the cuts Pentagon officials are considering as they redraw their fiscal 2010 budget plan.

A chart prepared Tuesday for senior Defense Department officials by program analysts and budget officers outlines about $17.2 billion in possible cuts to the $115 billion allocated for weapons purchases and construction in the draft.

The chart reflects the “hard choices” on weapons spending that Defense Secretary Robert Gates said would be necessary when he testified before congressional defense committees Jan. 27.

The cuts include $3.2 billion from the $8.6 billion proposed to buy more F-35s, $1.1 billion from the $2.8 billion proposed for the F-18E/F, and the entire $2.5 billion the Navy proposed to buy more DDG-51 destroyers. In addition, $1.9 billion would be cut from the $4.6 billion the Army sought for the Boeing Future Combat Systems.

    Bump to correct.

    Should check sources more often.

Elta has meanwhile received a $95 million contract to supply EL/M-2032 radars to an undisclosed nation.

Gripen has smaller rcs for each version.

C and D is smaller than A and B. E/F will again be smaller than C/D. 39A average rcs is said to be 0.1m2 according to the Defence research agency. In real life dynamic rcs models and data would be needed to make any serious compilation.

I’d like to see the source on ECR-90 info… it doesn’t look right.

There’s also more than one version of erieye. The latest version (ordered by the PAF for instance) has better detection range against small rcs objects.

MESA Wedgetail just agreed with RAAF on a 10% capability reduction in order to be delivered “anytime”.

Overall, I don’t think this list is going to be very good unless you find some good sources and update them all the time….

    Gripen Supercruises

During a test flight today the Gripen Demo aircraft proved its ability to “Supercruise”, the ability to fly supersonic without the use of afterburner which results in fuel savings and an increase in range.

2009-01-21 | During last Autumn, the Gripen Demo performed 40 sorties as part of the development programme that focuses on opening up the flight envelope regarding speed, altitude, angle-of-attack and loads. This year, the testing has continued at the same high tempo. Today’s supercruise flight is part of the ongoing high speed supersonic testing that will include supersonic flights, with different load alternatives.

Saab test pilot Magnus Ljungdahl flew the Gripen Demonstrator aircraft in supercruise.

“The flight was conducted over the Baltic Sea, my altitude was 28, 000 feet and the speed achieved was above Mach 1.2. Without using afterburner I maintained the same speed until I ran out of test area and had to head back to the Saab Test Flight Centre in Linköping.”

    “Important milstone”

“To show potential customers that Gripen can supercruise is an important milestone”, said Gripen International Marketing Director Bob Kemp, “and to perform this activity only nine months after the Gripen Demonstrator was shown in public for the first time, is something that few, if any aircraft can beat.”

The Gripen Demo aircraft is a flying test platform for the next generation of Gripen and for the further development of the present Gripen C/D aircraft. Together with a ground-based test rig, the Gripen Demonstrator will develop and prove the essential systems and capabilities for the future, including its more powerful General Electric F414G engine, an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, advanced communications and electronic warfare systems.

Pic from NASA JPL which shows air temperature at height and latitudes.

I marked the testflight altitude with a white bar. The flight altitude was comparatively rather “low” for this type of test, normally official words about supercruise from other producers has been made for higher altitudes where there’s less drag and in effect higher speeds. The red temperature field in the chart above is relevant for most of the western world. For a flight over the middle of India the altitude should be around 32,000 feet to get as cold air temperature as at 28,000 feet over Europe.

And a reminder: This is a twin-seat Gripen that did “above Mach 1.2” and not the somewhat lighter and less draggy single-seat version. In the higher tropopause (+36,200ft) the speed of sound is constant and lower, where temperature and drag is lower which will help aircraft fly faster. There’s still some room to improve the number using higher altitudes and a single-seat jet.

    The F-35 doesn’t need tanks at all………;)
