    It (SX300) certainly is Mark – but where does the subject of the thread, SX330 come in?

    Seafire XVII serials ran SX271 – SX316 and then restarted at SX332 – SX370. No SX330.

    I hope that you can find your listings.I need a prove that 187 Sqn had these meteors although it is not logical.If they did not fly them,Then who?

    You can contact the Dept of Research at the RAF Museum at Hendon and ask them to send you copies of the Movements Record Card for these aircraft. That will have all the allocation details recorded on it.

    The Javelin was retired during 1965 and only one was left flying with the RAE until 1975, XH897 was used as a chase plane and a calibration platform for other new jets.

    Not quite.

    No. 228 OCU at Leuchars had Javelins on strength until, I believe, November 1966. They were training aircrews for the last 2 squadrons in the Far East, 60 & 64. No. 60 Sqn, the last unit to operate Jav’s, disbanded on 30 April 1968.

    Just located this in my meagre collection. TE311 at the RAF Town Show, Markeaton Park, Derby, May 1987.

    Because it’s a rarity? I hate to say it, but I suppose we see so many Spits that we like a bit of variety! :diablo:

    Daz, sorry, with the news of the first flight forgot this one.

    I think you are right. There are a lot of Spits in the air and all in virtually the same colour scheme. The two Seafires, in their very distinctive paint schemes, add something unique to the warbird scene. This thread proves it. Over 2000 hits since news of the flight was announced.

    I’m an ex-crab, but the Seafire is top of my list and has been for quite a while.

    Looks like you guys have done another great job, nice to see 2 seafires flying. Here is what ours looks like at this minute.

    Great job, everyone. The photos are fantastic. I wonder what thoughts were in Tommy Thompson’s mind as he saw the aircraft take to the air again? It must have been a very special day.

    Now, when’s the next one due to fly???!! πŸ˜‰

    Strange, isn’t it. Put ‘Seafire’ in the title bar and watch the post and view counters take off. The same thing happened when VP441 flew again and everytime new photos are posted.

    This thread has had just under 100 posts and around 8200 views. Very few other threads get anything like that amount of interest. What is it about the Seafire that generates this?

    Whatever it is, this must be a good sign for any shows that include this aircraft in their list of participants.

    Anyone care to comment?

    Hi Alan,

    Thanks for the reply.
    I’m quite sure that the aircraft in question was a Meteor. the Harvard crash would be to far from the city, the main part of the aircraft came down in Wolstanton cricket ground.

    Following info from Air-Britain’s ‘Broken Wings’ and Colin Cumming’s ‘Last Take Off’:

    2 October 1953; Meteor F8; WE856; 19 Sqn; Porthill, Wolstanton, Staffs.

    The aircraft had been undertaking aerobatics over Newcastle under Lyme for about 10 minutes when it dived into the ground.

    The pilot, Plt Off P R Boulton, was killed in the accident.

    The entry for this aircraft in Air-Britain’s “Fleet Air Arm Fixed-Wing Aircraft Since 1946” shows it ready for collection on 30 April 1946. No first flight date though.

    Laurie,

    Still in transit.

    If it starts it will be to flying condition I am sure. It will be third in line behind the the two Mk I “kits”.

    It will be interesting to see this one in an early colour scheme. I see there is a trace of SEAC in its history and a photo on page 533 of Spitfire – The History, when it was on trials work at Boscombe.

    It’s a Type 80 all right, First prototype at Bard Hill in Norfolk, First operational one at Trimingham (again in Norfolk) last operational one at Buchan. Bawdsey’s one was replaced with a Type 84 (on the same base structure) which was then moved to Bishops Court, where it was scrapped in 1990. The other radars on your last but one post are most likely the intercept radars in the cartoon (and do not look like any British radar I know of, however the height finder does look like a Type 13).

    When I was at Bawdsey from October 1964 – May 1966, we had both a Type 80 and a Type 84. Each operated from seperate base structures. When did they change?

    Besides these radars, we also had a Type 54, 3 nodding donkeys (AN-FPS 6’s), and a Type 7 at a remote site some 2 – 3 miles away.

    IIRC there were a pile of them scrapped at RAF Shawbury in about ’61-63 ish?

    I certainly remember the ‘blue note’ they made?
