Neil, thanks for that. I have a suspicion that the bars may have had a yellow edging to them in Hornet or Javelin days, in the same way as Les outlines for 3 Sqn’s bars gaining a yellow edge.
I have looked through some old photos of 33 Sqn Hornets at Butterworth in the mid-50’s. As Neil suggests, the colouring appears to be dark blue/light blue/red. There is an edging to the bars, but that is a dark colour, possibly black.
I have only seen a couple of photos of 33’s Javs. The colour arrangement was the same.
Although all the photos were black and white, there was no trace of what might have been yellow in the markings.
I have read through several accounts on 307 Sqn’s time with the Defiant recently. In all of these, the main point is that pilots posted to the sqn were very unhappy with the aircraft simply because they were not in control of the weapons. They wanted to be posted to a “proper” fighter unit where they were in control of the aircraft’s armament.
No where in these accounts does it mention ‘mods’, official or unofficial, to incorporate forward firing guns to the aeroplane.
Impressive – Who strayed off course ????

Here, there is a link into the CAA website. The skydivers reported an Airprox which occurred on 31 July 2004 over Sibson at around 1645 hrs.
The chap who took the video stated that he thinks he owes his life to the fact that he spotted the Chippy at the very last moment and deployed his main chute. If he had left it a fraction of a second later, he believes he would have collided with the aircraft with fatal results to himself and the pilot. He goes to say that he estimates the Chippy passed within 10 feet of him 😮 😮 😮
One very lucky chappie!
The aircraft involved has not been traced.
The news page Newark Air Museum website on this link gives the current position on this:

Great pics.
Scary to think it’s history… 😮
Perhaps you might like to explain some of the acronyms? Not everyone speaks Raff.
Thanks for sharing.

Any history on this Seafire. the SX code i think was used by a lot of the Sefires of 1833Sqn RNVR . Based at Bramcotes Warwickshire.
Air_Britain’s ‘Fleet Air Arm Fixed-Wing Aircraft Since 1946’ shows the following service history for SX336:
“Ready for collection, 30 April 1946; delivered RDU Culham, May 46; AHU Abbotsinch, 21 August 46; tested 22 November 46 – 3 December 46; to GI Class II as A571; At Bramcote as A2055, June 53; AHU Stretton, 27 July 55 (fire fighting practice); sold for scrap to British Aluminium, Latchford Lock, Warrington?; Joseph Brierley & Son scrapyard, Warrington.”
It was at the latter location that Mark 12 came to the rescue.
The aircraft appears to have never been issued to a front-line or reserve squadron.

Colin,
The date of the accident should read 10 February 1966 and not 5 February 1966. The date shown in Cummings’ book is incorrect.

Hi all
While 20 Sqd were in Malaya in the 1960`s would anyone have any information or photos on the use of Jet Provost T.4s that were used in the conflict.
I know XS221,223,224 were there. Also I assume that XS221 did not make it back because it crashed Feb 1966 (I assume while in Malaya), why did it crash?regards
colin
Colin,
XS221 crashed near Alor Star, Kedah, on 5 Feb 66. This aircraft, along with some other JPs was being used to test the feasability of operating the aeroplane in the Forward Air Control role.
Details of the crash as recorded in Colin Cummings ‘Lost to Service’ are:
“Aircraft was engaged on trials to judge the suitability of using the Jet Provost as an airborne Forward Air control aircraft. It was overflying the target area when it crashed into the trees and the pilot did not attempt to eject and was killed.”
The pilot is listed as Flt Lt Peter Sydney Loveday. He is buried in the Western Road Cemetary here on Penang.
I don’t know what the outcome of the trials were, nor how long they lasted.

Laurie.
We dont often see the old DHC 7’s, nice shots there 🙂
Thanks, Ao. Just learning how to do this. As and when I have some more, I’ll post them.
Planning some SIA flights soon.

Returning to base at dusk, duty carried out, after a long, hard patrol over the Atlantic approaches.
No.2 engine feathered, No. 3 throttled right back and No’s 1 & 4 working overtime. Just about to touch down.
Rolling out on landing at St Mawgan.
Finally at rest on the pan.

Thought that I would try a few of my shots. As you can see, my interest is mainly military.
DH Hornet departing Butterworth and heading south. If only………….
Sea King lifting off from Scampton.
JP 5 airborne from Cranwell.
Will try some more later.
