A very sad day for all. My condolences to his family and friends.

I spent some time chatting to one of the old guys at a local garden centre a couple of years ago after buying a poppy. He was incredibly modest about the things he’d done, but it absolutely made my day to be able to spend some time with him talking. As I was about to leave, he mentioned that he was glad that at least someone seemed to care these days. Unfortunately I had to be somewhere else shortly afterwards otherwise I’d have happily sat down and spent the rest of the day with him.

Has anyone got any pics of the Mosquito PR Mk IX in South Africa?
The only image I have is here: http://www.mossie.org/LR480.htm

This is one of the sites I help with – glad to hear that it is being looked at!

There are quite a few images on the Museum-Explorer site at http://www.museum-explorer.org.uk/show.php?page=exhibit&c=5&m=12&y=31&e=375&t=5 – most of them are images from the time it was having work carried out on it at Duxford.

I have been (reliably I believe) informed that the yellow circle painted on the back of armour plate signifies that it is made of steel, an important consideration bearing in mind the proximity of such items to the aircraft compass!

Does anyone know what the music is used for the first half of the video?

[Pedant] Do note that if you are going to do an electronic search, there is no ‘e’ in Mosquitos, unless you are referring to the insect. [/Pedant]
And there I was thinking it was just me spelling it without the ‘e’!
Mosquito tyre size
Tony Agar tells me that the Mosquito tyres are “1500 by 16” – I hope that helps!
If you need more information, let me know and I’ll see what I can find out.

I don’t have the answer to hand unfortunately, but know one or two people who could probably answer off-hand. If Bruce doesn’t beat me to it, I’ll post the reply as soon as I find it!

I feel that photos such as those shown earlier in this thread are important – Too often photos such as these are not shown as people feel that they are too terrible to be shown. I feel the opposite, it is important to show them to demonstrate just how awful war can be.
Yes, they do typically show the last few terrified moments of life of those in the aircraft in question, but to ignore them, or to pretend that they don’t exist would be wrong in my opinion.
I agree also that we must be careful where images such as these are used.
Trying to imagine what must have been going through the minds of those aboard the aircraft in the photos has brought a lump to my throat and has made me feel ill. I’m happier feeling that though than feeling nothing.

Language selection in ieSpell
To change the language settings for ieSpell (and therefore the dictionary used), right-click on the background of a web page and select ‘ieSpell options’ from the context menu. Select the ‘language & dictionaries’ tab and then select the dictionary you’d like to use from those provided (I get the option of English (Canadian), English (U.S.) and English (U.K.)).
