Not quite the scene I had in mind….. 😮
anyone else?
How about setting up a picture in front of the Lanc with the current operating crew lined up on the right in their modern flight gear with a composite crew of genuine surviving oldtimers in period flight gear lined up seperately on the left, with the image faded to sepia tones down the middle?
Could also be done the same with a Spit and Hurricane?
I think it would be a very nice poignant touch, especially as there are fewer and fewer of these old boys with us these days.
Make a nice change from the Aeroplane being the star all the time.
Must be some mistake, that is clearly a cockpit picture of Thunderbird IV 😀
Can’t open your images, but the engine is definately sleeve valve radial, almost certainly a Hercules thus pointing to the Beaufighter hunch.
One of the resident Beaufighter experts may be able to confirm on the panel.
I seem to be the kiss of death to any threads I respond to……….. 🙁
Can’t we turn this into a gratuitous Shackleton picture thread now?
One of my favourites indeed after growing up with them during my formative years in Elgin.
Four Griffons in close formation………Ahhhhhhhh…
Dig those pics out folks!
On a similar subject, does anyone know if the crew are wearing period headwear and flightsuits in the Blenheim aerial photo on the cover of this months A***plane monthly?
Looks very nice Oleg, is she a flier?
Mark12…..That is one of the most shocking displays of gratuitous flying with out a helmet I have ever witnessed…….
Got any more? 😀
It’s not a Vickers Valiant by any chance is it?
Don’t forget Joe Smith, he developed the Spitfire into the fighter we all know.
Cheers
Cees
Yes indeed Cees, a good foot note and I would also add (Sir) Stanley Hooker the mathematician who became ‘not much of an engineer’ and gave us the two stage Merlin in his early years (just for starters).
Thats the correct wings alright.
I guess that they reverted to an RHS within RHS design for the 22, with the addition of the steel doublers noted.
Where are the Spitfire experts when you need them eh?
XVIII rings a bell too, though can’t find my reference book.
This example is of a 20 series isn’t it?
Are these the correct wings?
I always thought that the spar booms were laminated pre-Griffon & solid from XIV onwards?
Did they revert to laminated for 20 series?
