You should consider that they are about the same size as the M-frigates of the Doorman class. And well equipped for an OPV (check out that Thales i-mast). These are navy operated, not coast guard.
Yes I know
(and I know “Shipsbucket community” ;))
€500 million in 2010 prices, according to the Dutch MoD report from September 15 2009.
Very interesting, 500 million € for 4 big OPV; At 125 million € each, this design is relatively “cheap”…versus 650 millions $ apiece (+/- 500 million €) for the US LCS :dev2:
Yes they were built in 92-93 but they are a sub class using a mess of different obsolete foreign systems. The 50s-60’s vintage ships are less complicated and easier to source spares for. As I said I maybe wrong but rather then use the rolleyes button why don’t you actually do some research before you come back with glib comments…
Not glib comments
Simply strange facts, only
and the older type 051 Luda (clearly TOTALLY obsolete since more than nearly two decade ! although modernised), the Chinese are gradually replacing them by 054 ?
Looks like she is being scrapped or being prepared to be sunk in an exercise. The 052 Luhu class are an odd element of the PLAN fleet, in the early 90’s arguably the best locally built ships they had but they must be an utter logistics nightmare now! They are fitted with a mix of French, Italian, American and Chinese systems with little to no chance of getting spare parts for much of the equipment. The fitted systems are also pretty much obsolete and now the 054A are flying out of the shipyards along with the 052C, 051C and 052B (I believe the PLAN regards this class as a bit of a failure) they have many more ships with better more reliable systems. The cost of overhauling and replacing the systems of the 052 Luhu in comparsion with just building another 054A has probably sealed the classes fate. Maybe I’m wrong but its the end of the line for this class!
Very strange to retire from service a ships commissioned in 1992-1993 (1980’s design) when some others OLDER destroyers of 1950-1960’s vintage (Luda class, type 51, commissioned 1974-1990) were in service
:rolleyes::rolleyes:
*typical internet forum loudmouth with very little real knowledge of the equipment & program he is blathering about. I guess in your version of “reality” all the USN evaluation team have been bought off with suitable bribes by the contractors, eh?
You know as well as I that in the case of very expensive programs, the product itself accounts for only part of choice. A big part of the selection is made through lobbying, pressures, politics, ect ……………
How do you justify a cost rise from 220 to 650 million $ eh ?
This ship is fast, ok, this ship is modular, ok, I agree
But serious doubts arise regarding its viability in battle if it is hit
This ship is a Porsche, not a MRAP ! The military needs a MRAP, no porsche (but this is only my opinion …. now you have yours….)
But when the US Navy can not afford high-end vessels (CGX cancelled, ect…) …… you must not cry after this…
end of exchange for me
regard
but if its so craptacular, why is the navy pushing for it?
– Lobbying
– Corruption
– Older stratégic study/concept (end 1990’s-early 2000’s)
– Political aspect (very difficult for the US Navy to abandon the LCS when it comes to cancel the DDG Zumwalt and CGX programs …. after having strongly supported this 3 majors programs for 10 years) (and after that the U.S. taxpayer has put dozens of billions $ in research & developpment)
The ship couldn’t survive even a single exocet strike, so I have doubts about their military viability.
Completely false….
During the latest modern “missile age” naval war, the civilian ships
have shown their capacity to take hits
Remember:
– british atlantic conveyor, hit by exocet, set afire and sink
– Various tanker hits during the iran-iraq war (well know “tanker war”) (some were hits by bombs or exocet or others missiles but survived in spite of severe fire )
Of course, Mistral LHD can be sink (same as every ships), but this big size (& even more this great “internal volume” allow him to whitstand damage before sinking)
I doubt that a single missile can be sank her (much probably set afire, this depend of “state-readyness” of damage control teams)
And know that the civil standard of fire protection are sometimes equally rigourous than military standards !
outside of the US, what other countries would find suitable use for the LCS type ships?
Yes, “the Martians” :dev2::dev2::dev2:
Only the U.S. to buy 55 vessels of 3,000 tons, armed only with a 57mm gun, few machines-guns and a RAM …. and which costs 650 million $ pieces 😀
At this price, in Europe, there are heavily armed frigates with 76 or 127mm gun, 32 VLS, 8 SSM missiles, generaly a CIWS system, torpedo, 1 or 2 helico
A heavily armed LCS cost probably 1-1,2 billion…..the price of a destroyer 😀
LCS= A patrol boat armament, on a frigate hull, for nearly the price of a destroyer 😀
on second thought, that could be a poll: find a “british” name for the rafale in RN service (so forget about bad jokes 😀 )
Translation
RAFALE = violent and sudden gust of wind…or strong & short gale
If british cancel the F-35B order & buy instead a conventionnal aircraft, the differents options is clear:
– Navalised Typhoon: nearly impossible, this modification imply to heavily modify the aircraft…& increase dramatically the cost
– Navalised RAFALE: technicaly yes, but the hate that the English have for French (and their policy “all for the US”) will prevent the deal with the French, except if…
– F/A 18 super hornet: very possible
– Navalised Grippen: Hmmm, I doubt, I doubt that for a conventionnal aircraft, the single reactor is a requirement for the british
– Russian Mig 29 ou SU Family…..impossible
how about a german meko ship? is it an option for the turkish navy?
Yes probably
Ideally for the turkish navy, the F2000 would to be build “indeginously” by turkish industry
But if this “internal” program experienced too many problem, the foreign option is possible:
– French (Horizon or AAW F400 design), NO, I doubt, because the french is already in talk with greece navy for FREMM frigate….
– German (MEDO D or others design), yes, very probably the first “foreign option”
– Spanish (Alvaro de Bazan AAW frigate), possible, probably the second “foreign option”
Broadband, all aspect stealth
Conformal antennas positioned all over skin in addition to radar for passive detection and ECM
Full active/passive optics suite- LIDAR, DIRCM, multi-spectral imaging
Fluidic thrust vectoring
Variable cycle engines allowing Mach 2+ supercruise
Optical datalinks for very high speed, stealthy net-centric warfare
Ability to act as multistatic radar system via datalink with other aircraft
Ability to fly unmanned as well as manned
Ability to coordinate, act as “controller” or “manager” of UAV’s/UCAV’s
Optical Spectrum stealth of some kind
Directed Energy Weapons?
I agree…
Any view of this futur turkish F2000 AAW destroyers
(real or fan boys draw) ?
Ok, now after the first flight of the new stealth aircraft PAK FA T-50
A question rise….
This aircarft is “Aircraft carrier capable” ????
The Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi is another 570-footer in the same size range. It carriers 16-18 aircraft. It has four times the engine necessary and it too is loaded with self defense weapons. Cannot find a price for it.

The guiseppe garibaldi is a good ships for COIN operation, but the design itself is now too old (early 1980’s)
Sea Grippen
