Bignose delivered BLW to Feshie last Thursday. She’s still looking pretty good – but then you put plenty of that blue paint on her (and on the workshop walls, floor, ceiling & windows plus the drift into the hangar!).:D:D
Dave
Well the Pirat wingtips are lighter than a Skylark’s.

Just to let you know I have agreed to buy BLW from Bignose and she’ll be at Feshie permanently from end April. Pop up sometime if you fancy some flying on a decent sized ridge!

Hi Eric
hope you’re not wishing you never saw that T21! It’ll be great when it’s finished – honest!
In the past I spent some time looking for T21 windscreens but all the rumoured sources (Mclean etc) drew blanks. We got a pair made up using the original canvas surrounds and a new “unbreakable” clear plastic which no-one has managed to break yet!
If you can find a pair of scrap original screens (I know yours are not original pattern so no good), that’s what I’d do again because the plastic in any genuine originals will be very brittle.
cheers
Dave
I’m away from my references sources for a couple of weeks but will let you know when I get back. Eric – have you got them?
There used to be a hangar packing spoon near the old hangars at Feshie made from two T21 wheels and tyres, but they must be pretty shot from all that Scottish weather. I’ll have a nosey around when I get up there.
Dave
Hi Eric
You’re doing a grand job as ever. What’s the latest on the wing you thought you’d have to replace? I think that there’s an official BGA mod to change the wheel size. I know you’d want an original but they are very very scarce now.
Dave
I’ve stripped lots of fabric covering off wooden gliders and it always comes off very cleanly with no damage to the wood.
Also look at Eric Munk’s T21 restoration thread – you can see a wood airframe where the fabric has been removed.
cheers
Dave
I understand that JB Nicholson was shot while under his parachute after the action in which he won Fighter Command’s only VC of the war – by a member of the Home Guard who fortunately was only armed with a shotgun.
So I wouldn’t say that the story of the Polish airman is impossible, but I very much doubt it would have been recorded.
Strange that, I left about 1 metre of adjustment on our axle position too! 🙂 Keep going guys!
Dave
Hi Eric
the trailer looks great but are you sure the balance will be OK when the glider is loaded? I built our club’s T21 trailer with same nose forward, wing roots at the back arrangement and the axle mounting point is just (0.085 metres) behind the centre of the trailer body. It may be the photo but your axle looks as if it’s some distance forward of the body centre.
Cheers
Dave
There is mention by Pierre Clostermann in the newer (2000) version of “The Big Show” of Tempest shortages in early 1945 due to a “scandalous” strike at Hawkers.
There is a photo of a single woman (said to be the wife of a fighter pilot) working on a long row of part-built Tempest fuselages. Clostermann stated that the unions insisted that she be sacked as part of the return to work deal.
FB – you still looking for skid doughnuts? I’m getting some ordered.
