They don’t seem to be designed for lift as much as the Mi-24s wings – just take a look at the shortened versions, they show the shape of the aerofoil:
    http://en.valka.cz/attachments/5461/MiL-Mi35M2.jpg

The pylons do look quite a bit beefier than those on say the Z-10, and are pretty wide too, interesting why they did not try to stick a third pylon in.

Also talk about large transparency area.

EDIT: So is India buying both LCH and armed Dhruv?

LARGE area windows have been especially demanded by IA / IAF aviation folks as it would allow them to have clear view of the mountains below, for great camera shots and of course for their kids to take ride in

The people in India who have a monopoly on R&D say that only a home grown system with R&D and Development by them will be suitable for India and no one questions it?

i am not saying that the Indian system should not be finished I also do not feel it will be good to put all the eggs in the DRDO basket as they do not always perform so well…

Matt no offense, but your frequent outbursts of pessimistic views in Indian Threads, dunno why it makes me remember a character from sci fi series:

I know u care about India but dude have some faith on desi scientists. They are much more qualified & experienced than you and me in their respective fields to take such decisions

    Cheers 🙂

It reveals that “Khappuski”, the nickname that AM Ahluwahlia gave him was a corruption of “Khappe” (meaning left handed)

    “Khabbe” punjabi for left

The missiles in this photo looks a bit out of place. Can anyone confirm if this is genuine.

pic seems to be fake but there are real cpictures os same config shown in defense expo

sorry about outburst, but it is very easy now day to blame center for everything, did I chosed them alone no everybody is part of center.

I am Sikh, I can say center is supporting south, all eggs in one basket of south why no research center in Punjab why no new ofb factory in punjab how many heavy industry center start in north, list is nowhere near end Evan every war north bear the burnt

I am not a sikh, but I concurr with you. True words never said before, Its North Western states which have to bear brunt maximum in wars. Nearly Zilch investment has been made by center in terms of opening up research centers and other industries(yeah yeah why no IISC/IIT”s/IIM’s. Why no OFB’s over here, why cant we have another division of HAL/NAL over here). Some times I realy feel that center sees the north western states merely as cannon fodder and nothing else much. Heck all the center seees that youth of these states should end up either as soldier or a farmer. the end

How come he flew for the Iraqis for two years in the Iraq-Iran war? I know Iraq and India had some common Socialist/Communist/Stalinist allegiances, but never knew it actually went beyond covert WMD/missile assistance.

What covert WMD and missile assistance to Iraq did INdia provide? Any links about it? or is it your fantasy?

My feelings on the matter are this: the GTRE has existed for over 60 years and the Kaveri program for over 30 years, and in this period while there is plenty of R & D going on at any given stage, they are yet to produce a final, working, ready product in any form.

Forget about the LCA, I’d be happy to see a flight-tested, airworthy 60kN engine for UAVs like they were suggeting. But even that is at least years off…:(

Some of my questions I will like to ask Witcha, hope you will answer:
    > How many jet powered UAV’s has India developed till now or have reached prototype stage?
If the answer to above is no or is that they are still on drawing stage or wind tunnel testing stage. Then kindly tell how do you expect Kaveri to power a non existent UAV. In the future, maybe yes.

    > Flight testing of Kaveri in a fighter jet will happen, but for that they have to employ LCA. But for LCA team’s current priority is to validate FCS/weapon delivery capability completely before its induction in IAF, and most probably that’s why they cant spare an airframe for the GTRE. I am sure like any developmental team they would not like introduce another unknown variable in their final phases of testing. Kaveri has been undergoing many high altitude tests in Russia in a rejigged IL 76 platform and has recently seen some success.

    >Usage in tanks for IA: No idea, IA doesnt have any turbine driven tanks in its inventory, and dont know whether they will open to this idea.

    >For Navy: I think there is already a project for Kaveri Marine Gas Turbine. And Indian Navy is serious about KMGT being used for their ships. This is WIP

    >Now IMHO, I don’t feel comparison of ISRO with GTRE is valid. Even lets take of China. China has an advanced space program ( ahead of India) even they have recently been successful with their jet engine. Inspite of their success, they are still cautiously introducing this engine into their J-10 and Su-27/30 fleets. It will take bit more time for them to gain confidence in it and leave their reliance upon Russian Engines.

I think designing/developing a modern jet engine is bit more complicated than rocket science :p.

My comment from page 13, which I still hold to be true. it is not generic or overly simplistic, it is very factual, its in response to another post made by a poster not by GTRE so not really critical.

which would be inane if jv does not fulfill GTRE’s main aim( which was also stated in page 13):“GTRE main aim would be to gain more on alloy/material know how for core secti on, rather than getting a KT on “How to design a Jet Engine”….”

Not only to him but every indian tax payer.

I pay the tax, but I am really happy to learn my tax money goes into developmental efforts like these, and so do my friends who know a thing or two about pains and labor one has to go in R&D. GTRE will see success for sure, if not today but can be tomorrow. If the rumor on BR is correct we might see slightly scaled up version of Kaveri producing “almosts” 90-95 kn

pardon me for asking but what is your nationality? Just asking since you claim to have ample experience with “Indian almosts” (maybe you could also enlighten us as to how that differs from Western almosts or even Chicom or Pakistani almosts).

How dare you ? Don’t you see.. GTRE has to account every paisa spent… naah almosts drained in river Kaveri…. to him?

I somehow doubt it. They are lacking more in the way of expertise than just materials, especially if you mean a modern engine design by today’s standards. Dual FADECs, use of ceramics and carbon fibre composites, RAM treatments, fuel efficiency et al. And there’s much more in the way of new developments.

You know what I think the GOI should be doing? Commissioning a parallel aero-engine research programme with a partnership between a foreign major(say, Rolls Royce) and an Indian industrial house like Tata. Some competition may do GTRE-Snecma some good and increase the chances of seeing a viable product in time.

Some say India can’t afford parallel initiatives for the same thing, but we routinely spend more money importing or licence-building foreign engines than we do on the Kaveri programme. So what’s another engine R & D initiative in comparison?

Productionizing Single Crystal Blades have been their Achilles Heel. I believe they have been to grow these blades in Lab but bringing it in production is different issue all together. The CAG report talks about problems in developing Compressor, but what exactly are the problems, not much info is known. However from reading BR one gets feeling that its more of problem of not able to develop suitable alloy for the same.
