I am now assigned to an USAF F-16 unit and that pod is used to simulate certain threat signals for training of ship/ground and airborne assets to recognize certain threat emitters like fire control/search radars, etc. We have two of those pods in our avionics section.

I recall reading I believe in AWST or AIN that IAI has invested money into the ATG Javelin, several million dollars if I recall and if that is the case the military version might be developed to meet in Israel Air Force requirement to replace their Fouga jet trainers.

I read your post earlier and please do not take offense but got a chuckle out of it. Go figure an individual like Mr. Chavez wants Russia to contine development on the Yak-141. Yes I would have to agree with your statement, I make a reply in this forum and all of a sudden folks from all over take it out of context, they should read the thread, understand it before replying in haste. I enjoy the conversations with folks from all over the world.

What’s wrong with that? Last time I checked, Syrians were not considered as enemies by Russia.

There is not a thing wrong with that at all, if you read my first thread and subsquent ones you would have read that contrary to the statement by chrom that Russia is offering upgraded MiG-31s to Syria.

I feel you have to see weapons are evil in essence, war is evil in essence, you might justify and condemn what a given nation sell to who but all nations commit crimes either to their own populations or external populations because war in essence is evil, selling weapons is a crime against humanity.

Every body knows examples when weapons sold to evil governments or even moderate governments were used to commit social crimes.

History is full of bloodshed, full of war and war crimes and war has been called an apocalyptic knight when you see that you will see all nations have comitted crimes because war in essence is evil

Gandhi and Christ in that sense are two of the few politicians ( or religious leaders) who did not advocate war and their social movements were non violent in nature.
If Venezuela or Iran or China or Egypt or what ever the nations buys weapon is based upon the basic factor weapons kill and are either to defend your nation or invade another nation.

The US and Russia are the two biggest arms exporters and both have no moral to claim sainthood when selling weapons to dictatorships and evil regimes

    MiG-23MLD,

I do not see weapons as evil that should be evident by my name F/A-18ORDNANCE, I have been in the U.S. Navy for 16 years now putting warheads on foreheads including recently Iraqi Freedom. Once again I will repeat the intent of my reply to this thread. Russia was willing and able to sell a good combat aircraft to Chavez when the U.S. would not sell him any spares to support is fleet of F-16s. I do not give a *&^$ who sells weapons to whom, selling weapons is a business and there will always be a demand and a customer. I did not need any personal justification to put a JDAM on a Russian built Flogger or a British built Hunter, it does not matter to me who sold it or built it only if it is trying to kill me.

Iraq/Iraq was refused to buy C-300. Iran was refused to buy Su-30. Iran was refused to buy many other advanced systems . I dont even speak about Syria here. And if you question why a nation like Iran need Typhoon… then answer a question why a nation like USA need SSBN’s. Iran (and all other countries) need them for the very same reason. Again, Russia refuses to sell sensible weapons (even such minor as MANPADS and RPG’s) to many “unfriendly” countries. You just should keep in mind what term “unfriendly” obviosly differ quite much for Russia and USA. Hell, this term even different for USA and Europa. Whats why sentences like “Russia (China, France, Germany, India, etc) sell weapon to whoeve have money” is propaganda myths. They sell weapon for money to friendly or neutral countries – just like ANY OTHER COUNTRY. NO sane country sell weapon to unfriendly country – unless its planned to convert said country to friendly throught that way.

Syria, has been offered upgraded MiG-31s from Russia just recently, hell Russia is willing to allow the Syrian air force to trade in their MiG-25s for the new Foxhounds, so lets talk about Syria. My orginal post was not defining what country is friendly or unfriendly just that Chavez’s decision to buy the Su-30s was based partly on an arms embargo that would not allow him to buy parts for his fleet of F-16s from the U.S. or Israel. So if you want to go off on another tangant go ahead. The USA has SSBNs for nuclear deterrence and we have never publicy said that we want to “wipe a country like Israel off the map” like the president of Iran has been quoted as saying, that is why Iran wants nuclear weapons or vehicles capable of delivering them, that is the differance Iran is demonstrating an intent to use them because of hatred toward Israel and the west. If I recall just recently some Su-25s were recently delievered to Iran and Iran has placed on order for the S-300 SAM systems, Kilo class diesel subs that are quiter than nuclear subs, appears Russia is selling some quality weapons to Iran from where I am sitting.

When why Russia dont sell C-300 to Iran? C-400 to China? Akula & Typhoon to Iran, China, India? Typical propaganda myths…

Not propoganda, last time I checked the Chavez administration was not shopping for new U.S. or European built fighters and why? Because the governments of those countries will not sell weapons to that country with him as president. Now to answer your question, since it is a good question the weapon systems your are referencing are strategic weapons, the Typhoon class boats were built in low numbers and today are incredibly expensive to maintain, last time I read the Russian navy does not have all of these boats in service due to costs and need for overhaul, and I doubt that even if Iran could buy one would be able to keep it in service for long, why does a nation like Iran need such a submarine like the Typhoon when their navy is postured for littoral warfare? India would be the same reason, their defense budget would not be deep enough to pay for new MiG-29s the aircraft carrier that is coming with them and the 126 new combat aircraft they are shopping for. As for the C-300/400 SAM system I sure all the countries you mentioned in your question need to do is place an order and they will be delivered. So what is the propoganda myth??? Countries that have requirements to purchase new military hardware that are denied sales by the European nations or the U.S go to Russia who is willing and able to sell them what they need. I am not questioning the capability Russian aircraft the latest Su-30s coming out of their are quite capable aircraft.

man Chanvez is niether a nut niether an Angel he is a smart guy who is benefing his people with the oil that belongs to their people, he is not an angel undoutedly because he is a politician and therefore a liar but calling him a nut only because your friends is incorrect the guy is a politician that was elected by his country`s people and has democratically demostrated he is in power thanks to the poor people of Venezuela.

He is just the elected president of Venezuela like any other politician who uses power for personal benefit but at least as politician his popularity depends upon benefiting the poor with the venezuelan oil, his ideology of latin american union and his inpractical economic program in that sense Lula is smarter.

Is the Guy nuts? no the guy is very smart and he understands something you might not see he wants Latin america united and strong he is like Mao to China or Lenin To Russia he is not an angel niether a saint he is just another politician.

he needs those Su-30s as the US needs the F-22 only to defend his own country`s interests or in few words the Venezuelan interests

He needs new SU-30s because we (U.S.) will not supply him any parts to keep his air force’s fleet F-16s airworthy and Russia will sell their military hardware to anyone who has the cash to pay for them.

My guess is the VEN (variable exhaust nozzzle) failed or this aircraft had and an engine failure and had to shut down the engine. Looking at how the airlierons are positioned and horizontal stab I would lean more to an engine failure.

in reply to: U.S. Air Force jet with one pilot crashed #2513187

The F-16CG jet that crashed was supporting coalition ground forces when it went down at about 1:35 p.m. in Anbar province, about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad, the military said in a brief statement. The statement had no information about the suspected cause of the crash or the fate of the pilot.

Mohammed Al-Obeidi, an Iraqi who lives in the nearby town of Karmah, said by telephone that he saw the jet flying up and down erratically before it nose-dived and exploded in a farm field. He said other U.S. warplanes rushed to the crash site and were circling around it.

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, a U.S. military’s spokesman, said he doubted the jet was shot down because F-16s fly very fast and have not encountered weapons in Iraq that are capable of taking them down.

Al-Jazeera satellite television showed videotape pictures of the wreckage in a field and what looked to be portions of a tangled parachute nearby. The broadcaster said the video included scenes of the dead pilot but that they were too graphic to air.

One shot showed what appeared to be the tail number and included the letters CG. The jet that crashed was an F-16-CG, the military said. Another segment showed an Air Force seal that said Air Combat Command.

    Y! News

This news story is full of inaccurate info as well as the title to this thread. 1) The tail letters on the F-16 say “CC” to denote the aircraft is from the 524th FS out of Cannon AFB, New Mexico the aircraft was a F-16″CG” 2) Video of a dead pilot “too graphic for Al-Jazeera to air”, yeah right this is the same network that showed people being decapitated, they probably have no video of the dead pilot is more likely. The USAF has been quoted that the pilot is listed as duty status and whereabouts unknown and NOT confirmed KIA yet. So lets not jump to conclusions and let the authorities do their job before saying the pilot is dead or alive.

The Bell 412s and OH-6s belong to a U.S. private military company (PMC) that provide support services to the government of Iraq and the U.S. military. They “own” and operate their own helicopters and might not have the money to install DiRCM equiptment to detect and defeat MANPADS.

OK before flaming me. I was wondering, as a plane developed for the Navy the F-18 of course wasn’t fitted with a drag shute. However quite a few air forces have ordered the plane as well and operate from normal landing strips, Finland, Spain and Switzerland come to mind. I know they retained their arrestor hook

Has it been considered to fit these land based aircraft with drag shutes to reduced their landing role. Ecspecially considering the road based operations Zwitserland and Finland often use in training missions. Or was it deemed unneccesary as the landing speed of the Hornet was low enough for a short landing role

    Thanks in advance

PS, the reason why this question popped in my mind was because in Independence day Will Smith’s Hornet was equipped with a drag shute :diablo:

The Hornet’s approach speed to the boat is right around 130 knots give or take depending on configuration. That is a pretty low approach speed, when my squadrons Hornets are landing ashore they need less than 4000 feet of runway to land, roll out and stop so not much pavement is needed.

As for the brake chute, a modification would be needed and I suppose a fairing would have to be mounted aft of the speed brake between #1 and # 2 engine attached to a structual member. But once again the Hornet does not require that much pavement to stop.

Excuse the ignorance….but does Brazil have any serious enemies?

Yes, illegal airspace violation drug runners and your friends can always become your enenmy tomorrow.
I think the the sheer size of Brazil and the lack of radar coverage of remote areas of the amazon require Brazil to have a credible and responsive fighter. While Brazil at the moment has no external threat from her neighbors that could always change, their neighbor to the north is always rattling his sword. In addtion the amount of drug trafficking that goes thru Brazil requires a fighter that can loiter longer than what the M2000 or F-5BR offers, I mean a drug runner flying a Cessna 206, 208 210 or any other GA aircraft will sip a lot less gas then a range limited F-5 or M2000 (unless you have dedicated tankers). Drug runners illegaly enter Brazil’s airspace frequently that in itself is a violation of Brazil’s soverignty as a nation requires a military response. The 12 M2000 leased to Brazil cannot cover the defense of the capital and the nation, just not enough of them to cover this large country. I don’t know the loiter time of a SU-30/35 but I would suspect it is alot longer than a Gripen of M2000 or Rafael. There is my two cents….
