Does anyone in this thread now where to purchase HAF squadron patches thru the internet if they are available for sale? I would even be willing to trade a few my squadron’s (VFA-201) patches in exchange. I am enjoying the wealth of info on the HAF keep up the good discussions.

A little more info on the JDAM weapons I load on my squadron’s Hornets. 1) As ELP states the INS provides guidance commands and the GPS aids the INS. Using just GPS the JDAM GPS CEP (circular error of probability) is 13 meters, INS only the CEP is 30 meters and combned is classified. 2) Release evelope for the F/A-18 is any where between .2 Mach to .9 Mach at altitudes up to 40,000 feet. 3) On missions where GPS aiding is not available the CEP is effected, this happens when SAT (safe air travel) time is less than 30 seconds and where GPS aiding is denied. During OIF the JDAM was weapon of choice we dropped over 100 on targets in Iraq, one of the targets was an Iraqi GPS jamming station intended that our GPS guided weapon took out. The GBU-31 and GBU-32 were the only weapons available but now with the 500lb GBU-38 out in the fleet this is becoming the weapon of choice to reduce the collateral damage in the urban warfare environment our troops are fighting in.

Being assigned to a F/A-18A+ Hornet Squadron and living close to the base I see all the aircraft assigned there flying in the pattern. US Navy and Marine Reserve Hornets from my squadron (VFA-201) and VMFA-112, KC-130F/R VMGR-234, C-40A VR-59, F-16C 457th FS, C-130H 181st AS and of course I get to see the new F-16s being delivered from Lockheed-Martin across the runway to their new custormes. Recently I have seen Israeli, Chilean, Omani Vipers taking off on FCFs or delivery flights.

When my airwing made a port call to Souda Bay in March of 2003 I took an MWR bus from the pier to NSA Souda Bay, now being my first time in Greece and Europe for that matter I did not now that Souda is an active HAF air base. I saw some T-33s parked out in the grass but what else is based out of Souda AB these days?? I have read that the Block 52+ F-16C are out of there? Also does the HAF still fly the A-7H? I live not 15 miles from where all the A-7s were built and curious to know. When I was on liberty in Chania I found a shop that had some HAF patches I bought them and had the number 115 and there rest was in Greek but it did have a silouette of an A-7. Soon I hope to make a 1/48 HAF F-4E, the paint schemes the HAF uses are quite attention getting (Agean Blue?)

My collegues across the pond, just an observation here in the states but I am amazed at how an accident can spark so much talk about Greek/Turkish nationalism. I must admit I am a layman to the long standing differences between Greece and Turkey but I have to ask why would one NATO member allegedly launch an armed reconnissance mission over another NATO members territory? If what I am reading in these threads are correct the mission was to photograph a Greek S-300 SAM battery in eastern Crete? What threat is a SAM battery on sovriegn Greek territory to Turkey when they are allies. When my airwing made a port call to Souda Bay, Crete in March 2003 moored aft of our carrier was a Turkish frigate (I thought these two countries were one good terms with one another?) Sad that such brinkmanship has cost the life of a pilot, father and husband how many more pilots will die?

Don’t see it happening now that the 2007 National Defense Act has left the Senate with verbage in it specifically authorizing the Navy to go down to 11 carriers. This clears the way for the Navy to decommission “Big John” before the end of the fiscal year. Our European allies I do not think have the budget to afford her, as it stands it is costing the Navy $20 million a month in Operations and Maintenance funds and that does not include the payroll for the crew. Being a fossil fuel carrier and that their aircraft are not CV capable aircraft, our allies I do not believe could operate from her, I don’t see it happening. The French Rafale M and Etendard I do not think can mate to the catapult shuttle every time they came to the CV I am on they just bounce not trap because they cannot lauch of our ships.

Here in the U.S. we use the MK80 series familiy GP (General Purpose) bombs. These bombs can be delivered in HD (High Drag) or LD (Low Drag) configuration. This configuration depends on this mission. If my squadron is coming in low and hot the MK.82 (500lb) would have a MK.15 Snakeye fin or BSU-86 installed. In this configuration the bomb can be dropped (pilot option) retarded or not. MK. 83 (1000lbs) is delivered with a BSU-85 Para-pack fin an air inflatable ballon deployes retarding delivery as with the MK15/BSU-86 this can be delivered non-retarded as well. Hope this helps with your question.
