Nice find LMT.
Hi LMT,
Yep, Tempest Mk F5 mainwheels. ( AH 8093 ) My Dunlop Lists confirms and sizes correct too. Tempest,s 2,5,6 and TT5 had Mainwheels Dunlops AH 8208 (very slightly bigger sizes ). Your Wheels are of the one piece loose Flange type, held in place by a close tolerance steel, circular lock ring, it’s locking collar fits into main hub. Yours looks to be absent from wheel in pics. probably held in place by corrosion. The bearings on wheel would be combined roller /Ball race units and it looks like the originals might still be in there and that cover plate bolted in could be original too. The farmer who owned this wheel probably got some one to turn up and thread a through axle with spacers (Inside) as an aircraft axle would be thicker than one shown. Like to see pics. of wheel once stripped out to see what is original. Should be a brake drum of some kind on other side of wheel, unless that was removed also. Attached pic. of a Dunlop Loose Flange Wheel ( AP 2337 Wheels and Tyres ) Not your type, but gives you an idea. Would be nice to see them restored to static / display use
Whats the plans for their future ?

Hi James,
If you are still out there in forum land, just to let you know I’ve not forgotten about your dad Keith Middleton, but with age and various family commitments and illnesses, it has all got put on back burner over past 2 years, but intention is to find that pic and post it here and anything else I find. That model plane that “Lighthouse” was flight testing for him at the time was a mid wing semi aerobatic trainer and had an OS 40 2 stroke glow plug engine fitted, ( Methanol wood alcohol model fuel ) we used these in all the trainers and Aerobatic ships. Keiths plane went on to fly very well and he flew it many times subsequently. Seem to remember that after Keiths death, we packed up all his stuff into a crate that was put with his other belongings and would have been sent to UK. I cannot remember if this model plane went in or not, cos he may have crashed it before hand. ( A regular occurrence out there as we were all into scoring points off each other –lol !!! ) and the hard packed sand smashed engines and planes to bits.
So if you get to see this pic. of his model ,you will know instantly if you have it or not. This was one of, or the last model planes he would have flown, so we need to find out if you do have it there at home or not. Dave Griffin and I knew Keith very well as we did each other, so this job of finding and going through all my Ex-“Toytown” pics. is on my list of:- Must do asap. My best wishes to you and Your Mum.

Jay–Paul1867 and Anon have it encapsulated spot on. That was a courageous thing to do indeed and although I didn’t see either of them flying or static, that’s OK. I donated to the replacement engine fund and have signed the Petition because like many other folks here in UK, I appreciate what CWHM and members have achieved along with help from organisations and individuals here in UK to make it all work. The risk the Canadians took and the spirit that it brought out in folks here in UK, was of a great order we don’t seem to see much of these days in general. ( I watched Vera’s slow progress back across the pond to Canada on Plane Finder, etc and had fingers crossed all the time. )Whole new batches of younger people here now know what Lancaster bombers were all about, like in my younger days we watched the main Line steam trains batting down the tracks and that was it, we wanted to be an engine driver. So these 2 Lancasters have sown seeds in the younger generation, that the EU and our government never will. So folks will want to help CWHM or not, it’s a choice and you all know where you stand on that one. I raise my glass of Spit***** ale to everyone who made it all ,as no doubt all of the WW2 vets will have done too. Great independent efforts guys and gals, now how about helping the Pantons get “Just Jane ” Airworthy, I intend to when I can.

“Vera” is now past Quebec City, (Way out North)but on a heading that seems to be straight in to Ottawa Airport for the Vintage Wings of Canada Air Show. She has popped in and out of Plane Finder, because she is staying over sparse areas of Quebec. So all looking good and she should be close to the ETA of 4pm (local) I’m still watching all this because her journey from UK is still on going. Yesterday she did land at Narsarsuak for extra fuel because of strong headwinds, but weather was lovely and clear. So that’s 2 more Fly-pasts done, (Narsarsuak and Keyflavik ) and one very shortly. They must be a very tired bunch of people on that Lanc. Epic trip indeed.

Prefer “Plane Finder. Net” seems more stable and doesn’t keep timing out. By,by “Vera”, many thanks for your efforts to get here and follow the tradition,a lot of folks are now extremely happy, including me. Nice to be able to step out of the political mess we are in these days (For a while ) and your visit helped enormously.

CGVRA must be turning across Scotland soon, and present heading looks like Perth will be last UK city to maybe see her. Just had a map scroll out over sea towards Iceland and that is a huge expanse of nothing to cross. What an epic trip this has been for these guys who have such faith in “Vera”. Lanc. is climbing now to clear mountains ahead.

Scottish Border passing about now

CGVRA passed Sunderland now, heading North along East Coast, look-out Scotland, here’s your chance to see her.

Keep looking Larry.
Hi Larry,
Some interesting bits you have found. Item 15 looks to me something like the plug in attached pic. (Your pic. is blurred though ) These would be used in various places around radar/IFF/etc, systems on Lancaster and many other Aircraft. Item 19 looks to be a heavy duty electrical current carrying strap (Engine starting system ) from a component. Item 26 looks like part of a window or frame surround of a clear vision panel and item 39 would be fitted in many places in the pitot static system, this being a std. AGS aircraft part.
Have a good study through Bob Kats 2 year long thread of what he has found, done and compiled on His Uncles Lancaster ED-908, lots of effort from forumites in here gone into that to build up a last moment history and relics. This will give you clues and thoughts on which way to head. Wish you best of luck and I’ll help when I can. Peter knows the Lancaster very well and he is already helping you I see. So a good start.

Very impressive guys/ gals. Take my hat off to you.

🙂
Goodwood Revival, 13.45 On the dot, 2 Lancasters, 2 Spitfires and 1 Hurricane. The superlatives have all been used up elsewhere in this Forum. So, many many thanks to the CWH and to the BBMF for their efforts.
Is there the slightest chance we can repay the enormous compliment the Canadians have paid us by releasing the BBMF Lancaster to Canada for a flying visit over there? Isn’t that the very least we could and should do?
Along with East Kirbys Lancaster too once she is Airworthy.
