Try using a protractor or even a sextant.
Also, go and stand outside and watch a plane flying across infront of you (not towards) The angle should stay quiet constant (apart from ALT changes)
Also, if it is approaching you, the angle (if measuring with it in the far distance) doesn’t change much. Its only when it starts coming in closer that the angle will suddenly go through 90 and back out the other side again
From someone who has an engineering degree i would say that the measurement you could get from this is method would yield very inaccurate results,if you set up a crude measurement using a basic protractor, the errors involved are massive,or if you set up a very complex measurement system the speed of the aircraft is too fast in order for you to get consistant measurements. If you compare this to broadly similar applications say advanced weapons, such as smart bombs, the amount of computer power that goes into judging angles & trajectories is immense.
Also the statment that “angle should stay quite constant” for a moving object (aircraft) relative to a stationary object (person) is absolutely incorrect .
I dont mean to burst your bubble, but the challenge of gaining such a measurment is very very complex.
stick your photo in http://www.imageshack.us and choose to resize it,just tick the box.
I highly doubt your photo is 900 megabytes,id hope its more like 900 kilobytes, which is 100,000 times smaller!:D
How in the name of god can you measure the angle of something moving very fast relative to a stationary position?!
Basically what i’m asking is you measure the angle, the maths after that is fairly straight foward.
haha the ryanair lawyers are putting a case together right now!:D 😀
This is another example where Ryanair will feel hard done by in there attempt to buy Aer Lingus, when you see so many others around europe: EZY/GB & now Germanwings/TUI…michael isnt going to be happy…….
The one key factor in determining runway length is COST,if everyone had room to build a 10000ft runway they would, but if the money isnt there then the longest runway they can afford is built.Other mostly environmental factors also hugely effect runway lengths, noise pollution & terrain issues.
The Renaissance is the only choice really, look at this and you will see why:

I stayed on the spotter offer, but when i was checking in,everybody was asked if they preferred a room overlooking the airport,so ring them up and ask,the staff were all very friendly, except for the ones in the restaurant…..
Excellent photos, can i ask where you can get these un-obstructed views of 27L,from myrtle avenue i got the sense that there’s fences & what-not in the way?
Thanks Lads for the nice comments;)
sorry i should have said “moan in relation to my LGW visit”
Its at the bus company, obviously i understand the BAA dont control the weather;)
A TOTAL electric power loss on the 777 without warning of ANY kind is very unlikely.
What i would like to know is:
Did the crew declare an emergency on approach?,i cant clarify this at the moment.
It seems the time between the “Fault” & “Landing” are very short indeed,if the aircraft was so close to touch down,so close that they didnt have time to declare an emergency, then surely they would have sufficient speed & to make the runway.
My own opinion from speaking with people in the maintenance industry is that the praise for the pilots should be held back until they can be cleared of any wrong doing.
From my own technical understanding,i think the crew DO have a hand in causing this incident.I would be very very surprised if they didnt.
Very very good photos, crisp and clear
Must really get round to going to ZRH,it would mean an overnight stay as the schedule from DUB doesnt allow a daily trip, but looks worth the effort.
Ok SFO is a possiblity for UA,but the fact LAX has been running now since 1999 with EI,and it still hasnt matured into a daily service doesnt look too good for the future, especially if you look at SFO which is in a very similar part of the world & can develop a daily service in what 6 months?, i would say the LA route could be dropped in favour of an increase to SFO.
Yes rumours at best,
NW came very close last summer, along with MAN i believe, but something spooked em good very close to the start of last summer!
As for UA,i dont think they’re too bothered to be honest,no real competition from Aer Lingus,ok EI do SFO but with thats not even a daily service(not yet anyway) it doesnt really warrant another carrier on the route, same situation for years on the LAX route,EI cant even justify a daily themselves,so the demand is there, just not that big
Cant see UA doing a run from IAD either, same story is not even daily with EI.
Its definately different!
Was there another 747 possibly the same aircraft here, parked up at LHR for a long time with a similar registration around 2002?
