Yes, there’s a lovely sense of getting something for nothing when you find a part or bit of wood that is exactly what you’re looking for in the spares box.
I keep the plastic lids from aerosols because I’m sure that one of them will fit as a cowling in a later build!:o

I am pretty sure she was broken up. I am adament I saw / spoke to the owner of it when the engines were on ebay, quite a few years ago now

You could be right mercle, I think I can remember seeing a picture in the local rag showing the engines being removed, but I believed (wrongly?) that it was all being removed. Obviousely it was, to the scrap man sadly.

I thought the Varsity was disassembled and taken away to safety.

Jeff, glad you like what we’re doing with 963!

Regarding your photo, there was some good co-operative work done between 8 sqn and various Shackleton units in Khormaksar, the Shackletons often acting in an Air Observation Post role directing the fighters.

Ironic, given many years later which squadron was to operate the AEW variant of the Shackleton!

    Regards,

    Rich

    ps. Updates for earlier posts:

We went to 30″ boost and 1850rpm on both engines.
Air bottles working pressure is 1,030psi. I got mixed up with the capacity.

Thanks Rich, yes I can appreciate what you’re doing and the enormous difficulties of working on such a large aircraft outside. That’s what I call dedication. I restored a T. 11 Vampire some years ago to static condition and that was, although very satisfying to do, at times hard work. Sadly, it was never looked after and like so many ‘restorations’ fell back into disrepair. I can see this will not happen with 963.
If I can I will make the effort one day to come up and visit.
I’ll keep watching this thread with great interest. Thank you.

Hi Jeff nice picture, the ‘Jambia’ Arabian knife symbol was used by 8 sqn on their Hawker Hunters which were Khormaksar based at the time. Coincidently the same symbol was worn on the nose Shackleton AEW.2s when 8 sqn converted to the type from 1971 at Kinloss.
I’m guessing that it is a 37 sqn Shackleton in the pic as they were based there at the time, they didn’t wear a stylised vesion of their crest, but maybe an aircraft was ‘zapped’ by 8 sqn?

Thanks pagen01, I have the impression of all the Shacks’ wearing the ‘Jambia’ ( I could’nt for the life of me remember what that was called) but it was a VERY long time ago! 37 Sqn. does sound right. I do recal a time when they bombed some place out in Yemen that were harbouring dissident tribesmen, I think they had killed some S.A.S. guys and left them near the camp.
In those days us kids could happily walk amongst the aircraft and nose about without being challenged! Happy days.

Wandering through this thread I felt I just had to comment on the marvellous standard of work you’re putting into this dear old lady.
I have fond memories as a kid living in Aden (R.A.F. Khormaksar) around 1960-’61, and seeing and hearing the Shackletons daily. Attached is a not too good photo taken of the Khormaksar apron on an air day which is from that time. I’m not sure of the sqdn. but they had the curved bladed Arab knife painted on the nose.
    Sorry to get off thread.

Welcome to the site pops, Tose must have been wonderful times to live near Boscombe down.
I believe the B.36 was moved back onto the airfield the very next morning.

I can remember an Argosy parked at Exeter airport in the 1980’s, was that broken up there?

    Flytst,
I do’nt know of the Frome scrapyard, (I live just outside of Glastonbury) but I do remember there being a lot of engines (Centaurus?) and other aircraft remains in Frome railway goods yard in the late ’60’s/ very early ’70’s. I think it was on the edge of town going out to Westbury?
I was a lorry boy for Showerings/Babycham then and would have happily spent all day rumaging through that lot, but the drivers had no soul and needed to get on with other deliveries!
I can also remember a complete Swift in a scrap yard between Congresbury and Weston -Super-Mare (Bristol road) in the early ’70’s. From what I can recal it was in nice condition and on its undercarriage when I tried to have a look in the cockpit and was asked if I’d mind going away, or words to that effect by the owner!

That could be correct Lynx815. A chap on another site suggested Shallufa.

Thank you for the effort of trying to trace the incident.

    Unknown Lincoln

I’ve posted this elsewhere, and on other sites, but no one can identify the aircraft or location, though it could be middle east late ’40’s early 50’s. It was amongst old photos’ of my fathers time in Malaya 1951.

    Anyone got an idea?

    Jeff
