Doesn’t help much but:
I think that it will just push the Halifaxes, Stirlings, Whitley, Wellingtons etc even further back into the backwarters of WWII history and elivate the Lanc to even higher mythical status….
It won’t be long before the next generation of kids will just think that all fighter pilots flew Spitfires and all Bomber pilots flew Lancs.
Not a good move but it is their aeroplane so they can do what they want.
And remember too, that this aeroplane is the way in which the Panton’s pay a personal tribute to their brother, who IIRC, was Halifax aircrew (unless you wish them to conjure up a non existent airframe).
If my Euro lottery numbers came up that is exactly what I would do. Put my energy and resources into the non existent lesser known airframes…. But it is their money and aeroplane.
The account that I read was that it was actually a hoax. It was in fact a Halifax in the process of being dismantled – I could be wrong of course… The good old Halfax was much modified during its career…. For example what about the “gas powered” Halifaxes! I was told that two actually flew ops – Or was that just a myth too.
That is rather good….
I wish the Canadians had got some of their Halifaxes back to Canada at wars end… I bet they would have at least one working one today. They are much better at looking after their war heritage than us in the UK.
And no one seems to be interested in the fact that Linton on Ouse is to go as well.
It has the same pedigree as Scampston…..
End of the line for military bases in Yorkshire.
To get this thread back to a bit of normallity…..
I thought the programme was good and well balanced.
I watched her do the commentary on the 100th flypast yesterday at 1:00pm…. And felt that to be such a disapointment.
Not her fault: the director was rubbish. They kept cutting from one aircraft in the flypast to another never lingering for more than a second before cutting to an image of the queen, crowd, RAF regiment etc. So she and the others talking couldn’t give any coherent commentary. It was so disjointed which was a shame as she did her best.
I liked the Dakota flying by itself before the BBMF…..
Thanks Propstrike, that looks like the one. I thought I saw an L as the third digit.
Why do I never have my camera ready when I want it!!
Thanks for all your and the teams hard work and dedication on this.
Awesome work…..
I know what you mean about being too busy!
BBC Breakfast had an article on the opening of the building housing “the last Concorde to fly” going under cover. Interviewing an engineer and pilot. (Morris)…. Sadly all the pilot wanted to talk about was golf….. Usually the BBC’s website adds an article but in this case I can’t find one.
A Hurricane…… But then I never did follow the crowd…… But if forced I have to say 1a…
Sadly I agree with Cees… I’m a Hurricane, Halifax and Victor man myself but that seems to be the minority.
As WWII dissapears into the history books beyond living memory, and cheap research by journalists becomes the norm the myth of the Spitfire and Lancaster winning the war will just grow at the expense of all the other warbirds, and there will be little interest in rebuilding the “lesser” well know types.
I did wonder why there were no Halibags, Stirlings etc saved after the war but talking to my mum (Who lost her brother on bombers) she just said that when it was all over there was no appetite to save anything the country was so war weary they just wanted rid of the lot, and thinking about it the only reason we have a so many Lancasters left was that the Canadians took them back to Canada… If only they had got a couple of Squadrons of Halifaxes back there at least a couple would have been preserved.
Even if I won the lottery I wouldn’t have deep enough pockets.
Total agreement from me also….. The MkVI being my personal favourite.
Some of the artwork the Canadians did on that large nose is amazing: A bit suprised that nobody did a sharks mouth.
Glad we are having this discussion but a bit disapointed that YAM’s fantastic Halifax is even being drawn into this!
PN323’s nose should be a on much greater public display….. If the nose was a Lanc nose no doubt it would have been restored regardless of cost and be be on prominant display as the bomber that won the war……
