Thanks for the info. I’m interested in whether the IAF will keep using Russian munitions on its MiG-27’s after the upgrade or if they will switch to Western stuff.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

Entire A2G non guided russian weaponry will remain

Wow what an engaging, **** hot dogfight we are having here on the Indian Su’s and LCAs…..

People you should be on the Ejection seat of the Indian Defence Procurement process. But you are NOT and NOBODY on THAT hotseat gives a damn about what you think and what you dont.

If there is a showdown, rest assured the IAF will knock out the living daylights of the enemy, even with their motley collection of combat aircraft.

Understanding the nuances of the A320’s FMGS and MCDU is a more complicated matter I might add…Which is what i am currently doing…wanna give me company ????

    🙂

Now this makes sense..I was wondering what are they still doing with Su-30Ks when the already have MKI Mk3s…..

President A P J Kalam’s joyride in a Sukhoi fighter jet may have given a new lease of life to the ageing fleet of the fighter aircraft. Encouraged by Kalam’s sortie on Thursday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) would now go ahead with its plans to send 18 ageing Sukhoi aircraft back to Russia to replace them with new ones. “We are going to replace 18 new Sukhoi planes with the old ones from Russia,” said Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi after the Passing Out Parade (POP) at IMA here. A contract in this regard would be signed shortly with Russia, he said. Besides this, India would also purchase 108 more fighters. When asked whether all fighter aircraft would be purchased from Russia only, he said nothing has been finalised so far. “The talks are on in this regard,” he said. To a question whether India would buy F-16s from the US, he said the Air force is currently evaluating the aircraft and any decision would be taken thereafter. On the Thursday’s MiG-29 air-crash in Gujarat, the Air Chief Marshal said an inquiry is currently going on to ascertain the cause of the accident and dismissed suggestion that there was some technical fault in the aircraft. In this regard, he pointed out that the rate of air-crashes has come down rapidly in India.

The info on the Zhuk M is from the press. It could well be that they are going for advanced versions of the Zhuk M.

What US equipment even I am wondering aloud….That could be a slip of pen from the press

so its pretty much an SMT upgrade?

    Not sure….

Its likely thats they are getting the upgrade to enhance their A2A capability. No mention of the R77 Missile but obviously its there….They may may not increase internal fuel capacity, the IFR capability taking care of that…I think the increased internal fuel capacity (hump ala SMT) takes a toll on the maneuvering capability

And ofcourse the Zhuk M will give it KAB-500, KH-29, Kh31 capability

Found this on the Hindustan Times page

India’s fleet of 67 MiG-29 multi-role fighters are all set to be refurbished for $888 million by Russian company RSK-MiG.

“The programme is part of the Indian Air Force’s long-term plan to modernise its fighter fleet with the aim of expanding its strategic reach, firepower and area of responsibility over the next decade as India’s burgeoning economy and regional importance proliferate,” a senior IAF officer said.

The upgradation was granted financial clearance by the Defence Ministry in fiscal 2005-06.

The MiG-29 upgrade project has already been delayed by over two years. It is now likely to commence only in fiscal 2006-07 and be completed around four years later, officials said.

The upgraded MiG-29s will remain in service for 10-15 years.

The programme includes fitting the MiG-29s with upgraded weapons and a new avionics suite, with the old N-019 radar being replaced by the Phazatron Zhuk-M radar.

The MiG-29s will also be upgraded for mid-air refuelling to increase their endurance.

The IAF is currently refurbishing 125 MiG-21 Bis and 40 MiG-27ML fighters. These two jets are being equipped with advanced avionics, improved electronic warfare systems and precision weaponry to boost the IAF’s ageing combat fleet that also faces a sharp reduction in numbers over the next decade.

According to officials, RSK-MiG, the original manufacturer of the MiG-29s, will be the sole vendor to upgrade the IAF’s fleet of MiG-29B/S fighters and MiG-29UB dual-seat trainers.

RSK-MiG will independently source the equipment that the IAF will select for fitting on the jets. In addition, it will carry out life-extension checks on the upgraded multi-role fighters that were first inducted into the IAF in 1986.

“The avionics architecture that the IAF is firming up will be a mix-and-match of Russian, local and imported systems that are likely to be sourced from France, Israel and possibly even the US,” the official added.

Various options being debated by the IAF include dispatching a limited number of MiG-29 fighters to RSK-MiG in Russia for being upgraded.

This would be similar to the procedure adopted for two MiG-21 jets that were retrofitted in Russia in the late 1990s.

Following this, the programme was completed at the IAF’s base repair depot at Nasik in western India.

    ==================

    So Thats

    1) IFR Capability
    2) Phazatron Zhuk-M Radar
    3) Avionics from Indian, French, Israeli & US sources
    4) To be in service for the next 10 to 15 years

wow….the IFR would be the best thing to happen as they are really lacking on the range.

Are the indian Mig-29s presently capable of carrying the R-77’s ???
