Can I ask bmi-star if he knows whether Air Force One arrived at the military or civilian side of Frankfurt? It is obvious that the US Government would not pay compensation to Lufthansa for delays caused by the arrival of Air Force One. Does anybody know if departures and arrivals of aircraft from other airlines and indeed other nationalities experienced similar delays.

If the visit to BRU was anything to go by, all aircraft movements were stopped 15 mins before the arrivial of Air Force 1 and until Pres Bush had left the aircraft/airfield. Caused delays to all operators.

Some colour images to look forward to.

They all sound historic to me, especially the ‘Spiftire’. Would that be PK683 at Changi?

    Mark,

Indeed it is PK683, attached is one of the pics of her……

I still see alot of people mixing history and warbird, as if they have to collide in the same sentence, history is aviation past, not warbird aviation past! if so, then please rename the forum to reflect this.

It does appear from certain quarters that historic aviation, and this forum, relates primarily to warbirds or aircraft from WW2. One cannot deny that WW2 led to many developments within aviation, but this was a very small period in the history of aviation.

Today I have started the long process of scanning a couple of hundred slides and B&W photos from my father’s overseas ‘holiday’, forty years ago, to the far east during his time with the RAF. He was sent to a little known conflict where the helicopter took the main stage – a small part of rotary wing history for the RAF and Royal Navy.

There are plenty of pictures of ‘historic’ aircraft – Whirlwind’s, Belvedere’s, Argosy’s, VC10’s, Britannia’s, Trident, Comet, Scout’s, Twin Pioneer’s, DH Beaver’s, Percival Sea Prince’s, HP Herald’s, DC3’s and even a few pictures of an immaculate Spiftire.

    Sarcastic Mode ON
If I posted the pictures of the VC10, Britannia’s, Trident, Comet, Herald and DC3 – there will no doubt be a few saying be ‘off with you to the commercial forum’
Likewise with the pictures of the DH Beaver’s – off to the GA forum.
The helicopters – who knows – there are very few pictures of the rotary wing machines of the RAF as it is, anywhere. Might get a few grumbles as there not fixed wing 😉
The spitfire – I know I’m safe – its fits this forum to a tee. :diablo:
    Sarcastic Mode OFF

In any case a lot of work is still needed to touch up the pictures, so none will be appearing anytime soon. The slides are a bit dusty etc.

Ironically I’m sure there was a discussion about a year or two ago on exactly the same topic as this thread. If I remember rightly the same battle lines were drawn then as now.

    Dean,

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your viewpoint) not. I did commence ppl training a few years ago, as I intended to go down the modular route, but a change in circumstances put a temporary stop to this.

Since then I’ve worked my way upto a management position with the airline I work for and I’m currently deciding whether or not to bite the bullet and contine down the modular route. In any case I definitely want to complete my ppl training (I got approx 30 hours before I stopped), at some point next year.

The company has always been very supportive and have stated they would offer me an interview for a flying position etc, if I ever did get a commercial licence. On the other hand, my day job gives me immense satisfaction, where I have an input, although only a very small input, on how the company is run.

I won’t specifically mention the company by name, but not many companies are based in Aberdeen that operate Embraers.

    Steve,

Just to re-iterate, 35 definitely isn’t long in the tooth, the airline I work for take on individuals with a variety of ages, from early 20’s to mid 40’s. They’ve taken on older individuals but they were either type-rated or employed as direct entry Captains.

My ex Flying Instructor was in his early 30’s when he joined us, just over three years later he’s in the LHS of an Embraer – the two other F/O’s who joined at the same time as him have also been promoted.

Xplane has its flaws along with MSFS etc etc when it is straight out of the box, but if you took the effort both can produce highly accurate flight models.

I actually found that Flight Unlimited 2 or 3 was the one of the better programmes, without having to tweak the flight models.

With the ‘Trainer’ aircraft in FU2/FU3, you can follow the lessons in Trevor Thom’s Flying Training Manual with some accuracy. I used FU3 as a revision tool during my PPL Training.

Simulation is very subjective – what one individual may find realistic, another doesn’t. You should hear some of the comments from our pilots with regards to full flight simulators (level C and level D devices), they echo some of the comments on here…..

    LBARULES,

We’ve taken delivery of XL in anticipation of the CAA certifing the ER3 for LCY ops, but this is not expected before April 2005, hence the ATR will be around for a while yet. In the meantime we have a requirement for XL to operate elsewhere on the network until March 2005, so it will operate on our standard ER3 routes.

    Mongu,

More than likely IATA have a hand in it somewhere. The requirements are probably hidden in one of the many IATA publications, of which there are many.

Ticketing/Check-in systems are standardized across the entire industry with ‘standard’ ticket/boarding pass printers – hence why the boarding pass is the size it is.

I must admit to be surprised that with the advent of E-Tickets, that IATA haven’t yet found a neater solution for boarding passes. The Lo-Cost operators don’t have to bother with such requirements as I don’t believe any are members of IATA (would be surprised if any were considering the cost of membership).

    LBARULES,

XL will be operating out of one of the following bases, ABZ (ABZ-NWI), LBA (LBA-BRU) or MAN (MAN-GLA), depending on the ER3 fleet maintenance requirements.

All being well XL should be delivered before Xmas and be in service by Mon 10th Jan.

Not quite true, slots are still available between 0800 and 0900 at EDI, depending on what time you want to depart or arrive. Clicking on the time band you’re interested in, gives you a bit more detail.
