The intention is to use parts from the aircraft to use as a pattern for new approved parts for XL500 but also to keep the aircraft as cosmetically complete as possible so that externally it will eventually be able to go back on display somewhere.

If finances and time would have allowed i would have tried to obtain all the aircraft as here at St Athan on the Pickerston site there is more than enough hangarage to have an indoor aviation museum for everything to be kept undercover. If any one has a mind to do it there are grants available to start this type of venture from the Welsh Government but it takes time to sit down and get together bussines plans and time is something i do not have enough of. I understand how people feel about airframes going to the scrap man, but airframes left outside will eventually corrode to a point where there is no option but to do this.

I can confirm that the Gannet will be making its way to St Athan as a source of spares for XL500. The spares will be used as a pattern for certain items that have to be made for XL500 and the intention is to keep the spares gannet as complete as possible once the parts have been manufactured from pattern, so that the Gannet from Gatwick can still remain as a possible gate gaurd on completion of XL500 when she returns to the air. Without the help of museums like Gatwick i am sure that a lot of aircraft will not be flying today. Along with the Gannet the Sea Prince and the Pembroke will also be making their way to St Athan

    L29

I dont know where the story of two members pulling out is from. There is one for sale and is soon to be replaced by another one from overseas and number 4 is going back together after a complete strip down to the last nut and bolt, paint stripped and rebuild.

    Manuals

Thanks for the info so far. I have the aircraft maintenance manuals. I am looking for training sheets that would have been issued to engineers when they started work on the aircraft or at basic training

The aircraft will be returning to flight in her 849B flight colours. That is a day or two away yet though.

    Props

After nearly three years of looking, we have now aquired a set of tools for removing the props (thanks barry). The engines were removed a couple of weeks ago complete with the props on as i decided that we needed to move forward even if it meant that the props stayed on the engines for a while longer. Yesterday Barry Parkhouse delivered me a set of tools so that this can now be achieved. With engines removed along with the generators and other ancillaries it was down to inspecting the engine bay. The bay is excellent condition and is being cleaned prior to being painted. The new engines will not be put in until the airframe nears completion as they will be better off kept in the bag. We will endevour to remove the props in the coming week and then it is down to finding someone to carry out the overhaul without breaking the bank. Pageon has take n a few pictures so i expect that he will post them here for me soon.
