Hey all,
As we all know sikhs make a big part of indian armed forces-all branches-and many of them wear a turban for relegious reason. I have seen pics of sikh soldiers in uniforms with their traditional headgear. Could anyone please tell me whether they still wear them during military excercises/conflicts and how about pilots?
Thanks in Advnace
Thanks for the valuable input djcross.
From wot i have read, these two indeed do seem to b major problems, and i personally havent come across a credible solution to either of them yet, though there was some talk of using smaller devices to generate loads of fields but only around areas which add substantially to overall RCS of the fighter. As to wot progress they have made, i have no idea…but as i said b4 we r yet to c this technology being applied to a small cruise missile.
Following is a rather short link on Mig-1.44, which u may find useful

Its an old idea, bee around since the days of USSR. Instead of using RAMs or other techniques to RCS, russian scientists have been looking into the possibility of using plasma (ionised particles) formation around protected objects to prevents radars from seeing it, without affecting the general aerodynamical characteristics of the objects. However, there have been massive hurdles to overcome…and 2 the best of my knowledge the technique is not yet sufficiently advanced enough even for application to small missile let alone massive fighters. Even Richars Fisher noted in his report that The Russians have determined that plasma stealth may be unsuitable for low-altitude platforms, but are developing applications for use on high-speed high-altitude cruise missiles.
PS. A simple google search would give u plenty of articles to read.

Follwoing article-albeit rather old-by Major General Ashok K Mehta (indian army) may shed some light on overall costs of MKI.
http://inhome.rediff.com/news/2000/nov/17ashok.htm
The amortised per unit cost of the Su-30MKI will be a staggering Rs 1.61 billion. The up-front cost of the multi-role aircraft is the avionics and weapons fit. The 25 tonne Su-30MKI has eight hard points to carry another eight tonnes of missiles and bombs. This will cost money. That is not all. The hidden expenditure lies in the ownership or life-cycle cost, which in Russian aircraft is very high compared to the Western versions. The life-cycle cost of an Su-30MKI is likely to shoot up to Rs 4.5 billion.
PS. Assuming $1=Rs45 , Rs1.61 billion means aprox $36 mil and Rs4.6 billion mean $102 mil.

If bought it appears like they would replace the older MiG-21s and MiG-23s.
not true. M2K5 will not replace any aircraft in IAF inventory but will simply add extra squadrons and muscle to the strike arm of the IAF.
all Mig21s and 23s are to be replaced by Tejas.

IAF to induct 125 fighters to replace ageing MiG fleet
The new fighters would seek to partially replace 300 MiG 21 FL/M interceptors and 100 MiG 23BN ground attack fighters, which are on the verge of being phased out.

With the delay in the LCA programme, the IAF is in danger of entering a critical phase as it faces reduction in its fighter fleet from the current 39 squadrons to 32 by 2006.
He also said the FC-1 would have stealth because one model colour was white or something and a newer one was painted grey.. That’s just plain folly and doesn’t show any type of analytical skill.
Would you care to explain?
Lookie here buddy. Don’t bring Alan into the picture – it was you who was fudging facts, and Alan has nothing to do with it. And secondly – understanding this has nothing to do with military aviation – it’s plain darned common sense if you can understand.
I am also currently “eyeing” a lot of hot chicks in the neighbourhood – doesn’t mean I am in “official negotiations” to fcuk them …
If you make claims, better back them up – I don’t have the time and energy to spend countless hours trying to “verify” your garbage pakistanian claims.
Well sir, i believe someone like Alan Warnes has a much better grasp of military aviaition matters-than both u and me put together-and if he has found some space in his respectable magazine for a claim, it ought to carry somewhat more weight than your ‘eyeing’ of local chick or ‘oohing & aahing’ at glossy pics from some third class magazine would do.
all that means is that they’ve looked at the glossy pictures and oohed and aahed over it – what freaking “official negotiations” you are talking about I have no idea …
Well, here is an idea.
It was Alan Warnes of AFM who conducted the interview and wrote the article in question. If u have better qualifications in military aviation than Alan, then perhaps u should apply for his job…and next time u can do a better job.
Source please?
Unless im mistaken, it was AFM (???). I dont remember the issue number (perhaps April/May?).
According to latest AFM issue, ACM kaleem sadaat said ‘At the moment we r looking at the chinese AEW systems, and swedish Erieye, and a decision is expected soon’. In addition, there have also been reports of a PAF delegation visiting SAAB factories as recently as Feb 2004.
Just to add a bit more to the whole confusion list;

PS. Didnt saab also conduct erieye tests on saab 2000? And we know that PAF is in official negotiations with saab for Erieye.

Advanced techs in J-10 need about a decade or so to mature…and PAF needs an advanced fighter today.
As for PAF not being able to get an advanced fighter from elsewhere, ACM in his latest interview did say so though in a rather tacit manner. Only time will tell though.
My personal feeling is that it would eventually b J-10…and probably earlier than many ppl r anticipating.

U r right in much of wot u said.
But more mature members of the forum should also recognise this simple fact…which would prevent a lot of flame wars.
