Dr.Siddiqa also reported for DAWN that PAF has only 16 F-16s in operational condition. Also that Pakistani Ghauri/NoDong missiles are also inoperational.

Did she report that after a press briefing attended by several other journalists or did she quote anonymous sources?
    Do you see the difference?

The kind of trend that is emrging here indicates that this individual is a critic of pakistani military. If so, then her article about FC-1 is a pat on the back of FC-1.

I am getting feel that many believe the Grifo S-7 is a RC-400 level radar? Remember it is stated on “numerous” sources that the Grifo 2000 will be suitable replacement for the early F-16 with the APG-66 radar, and the same applies for the RC 400. It seems like the Grifo S-7 had a similiar purpose of the 2000, and that is to replace the older radars. However it doesn’t seem like a competition between the RC-400 and S-7 for FC-1 radar makes any sense and would be like the RDY vs RBEU.

Grifo family radars belong to a modular design, meaning that system integaration is rather simple and they can be upgraded/downgraded according to customer’s requirements. Grifo 2000 was offered as a substitue to Westinghouse AN/APX-66(V2) (probably targeted at countries which couldnt afford or didnt have access to MLU radar from US) to replace the old APG-66, which indicates the level of tech involved in Grifo 2000. OTOH I remember reading somewhere that at ideas 2002, Fiar officials commented that grifo S7 will be the most advanced version of Grifo series (by that time Grifo 2000 was well on its way while we still dont know much about R&D of Grfio S7). If u want to know the basics of grifo 2000, check
    http://www.aviationweek.com/shownews/02asia1/avion09_3.htm

PS. Something that replaces an old radar/fighter doesnt necessarily have to b low tech.

BTW, that user that stated numerous sites mentioned that RC-400 is an option, can you provide me a source other than the Venik’s website (Russian one) or the tripod one.

    Simply do a google search.
BTW that tripod source quotes Indian strategic review, a weekly magazine from institute of strategic reasearch and analysis.

Unless the russians revive it again, the project was cancelled sometime back.

Pakistan should not have a problem with getting radars such as the Grifo etc, for 150 planes, many a company would want to do business, I doubt that Kopyo would be in the running though since the IAF is familiar with that family of radar.

PAF is extremely unlikely to b interested in Kopyo. However, if i remember correctly, Janes did report last year that Russia was pushing PLAAF to buy super kopyo for FC-1, which to me was an indication (at the time) that PLAAF may indeed purchase FC-1 (or so do russians thought).

I found a Russian source stating the RC 400 is being considered, but than why choose between that and the FIAR Grifo S-7? Then again some are stating that Sino-Defence made an error so I probably emailing the webbies to fix the problem would do the job.

Following is an old piece from indian strategic review, which u may find more trustworthy.

    http://members.tripod.com/israindia/isr/July25/

    It says;
Russian RD-93 engine, a variant of the RD-33, which is powering the MiG 29, will power the plane. The radar is likely to be either Grifo S7 to be supplied by the Italian company Galileo, or RC-400 from Thales. 🙂

but then why choose between that and the FIAR Grifo S-7?

    And y not?
Who is to say, which is better?
On a sidenote, more options r always better.

    😉

Vikasrehman, can you prove to me with a French source that Thales was proposing the RC-400 on the FC-1?

As SD-10 pointed out…this is J-10 thread so lets not discuss such issues/comparisons here.

PS. There r numerous sites which mention RC-400, supersky ranger, Grifo S7 and a russian radar (perhaps kopyo?) to b the main contenders for FC-1’s radar. OTOH, u raised the point…so dont try to push the burden of proof to me please.

Improvements are probably focused much more in reliability, engine life and issues like smoking.

    Sounds very probable.
    But the issues were;
Is RD-93 really an upgrade of RD-33K?
Does RD-33K (itself an upgrade of RD-33…18,300 lb) have a thrust of 19,400lbs?
If the answer to both is yes, did they reduce the thrust during RD-33K’s upgrade (to RD-93)?

The Grifo S-7 cannot be compared to the RC-400

Is there any detailed info available on grifo S7.
If yes, would u plz tell the forum about the source?
If No, would you pleas explain your statement?

    which Pakistan is NOT getting

What is the basis of your statement?

The Grifo S-7 do not have multi-target tracing and attacking capability.

I have come across just one site about FC-1 saying so. There may be some more. We dont even know whether the development of the radar is completed or not. So who told u?

    Couple of interesting points from the original article;

There is provision for a twin-barrel 23mm cannon pod under the fuselage.

To me at least this is very strange.
Could this mean that cannon on JF-17 will b optional? I remember reading Usman shabir (of pak def and also writes for AFM)’s account of his interview with the AVM, in which he quoted AVM saying that TWR of JF-17 will b 1 and that composites will b used to reduce the weight. If so, could the gun pod perhaps b a novel way to reduce JF-17’s empty weight to improve TWR?

    infra-red search-and-track system and air-to-air refuelling capability

I think the presence of IRST system is extremely significant as significance of passive sensors in modern air combat is increasing by the day. OTOH, air refuelling capability supports rumours that i have seen circulating on some pakistani forums about recent pakistani attempts to aquire tankers for this purpose.

Russian Klimov RD-93 turbofan engine (derived from the RD-33 engine) and rated at 81.4kN (18,300 lb st) with reheat

Now here is something which has always confused me…RD-93’s thrust with AB.
Unless im mistaken, RD-33 had a thrust of 18,300lbs. I remember coming across at least one artcle from janes which says that RD-93 is an upgraded version of RD-33K, which according to another article has a thrust of around 19,400lbs (and over 20,000lbs for very short periods of time) and itself is an upgraded version of original RD-33.
So wot is the AB thrust of RD-93? Is it really an upgraded version of RD-33 (but downgraded in thrust)?

Various comments about Dr Ayesha Siddiqa, questioning her credibility or contacts within pakistani defence services.

I personally dont know anything about the woman and hence cant comment…but lets not let things get out of perspective here.

    1. First of all she writes for Janes, which is quite a reputable source of defence related news. I dont think such a publication would take on correspondents who are not good enough for them or lack any credibility.

    2. Now take a look at the article itself. In first paragraph, it says according to the Chief Project Director (CPD), AVM Shahid Lateef.. She quotes him again in latter parts of the article. As Janes correspondent in Pakistan, she was likely to have been invited to the press briefing (about jF-17) held a few days ago and the overall style of the article suggests (to me at least) that she is conveying to us what was said in that briefing…and not trying to analyse anything herself. Now i, sure most of yous on this air forum with a half decent knowledge about air forces could have done the job equally well…and if so, the credibility doesnt come into equation here.

    3. Finally, pakistani media reported that china has placed an order for large number of FC-1, while this article is saying that plaaf plans to purcahse 1,000 fighter. Wotever the end result be (we’ll find out soon hopefully), i think pakistanis seem to b rather sure (and hence telling the media) that plaaf will buy the plane. If PLAAF is not interested, then i dont know wot they will be doing with those 8 planes from the intial batch???;)

Latest Kanwa review has published an article titled J10A HAS A NUMBER OF PROBLEM IN DESIGN. Does anyone have any details?

    Just a simple point.
Many seem to be asking the questions whether china will buy any FC-1 or not.
I’d like to draw your attention to various pakistani newspapers which stated (last week) that china has already placed a large order for this fighter after briefings from PAF. Although, there is no official confirmation as yet, I dont think that so many papers would have made the same mistake or stated such a think unless there was a clear indication from pakistani side. 🙂

I think this figure of $35-40 million for jsf is purely the unit price…excluding everything else, which would inevitably increase the overall orice. This figure may seem low for a 5th gen fighter, but one has to remember that its based on the production run of around 3000 units and any significant changes in the total numbers (produced) will also affect the unit price.

    My 2 cents on RCS.
The biggest contributors to RCS r the radar (nose), cavities (intakes, cockpit etc), external load and sharp angles and finally the angle of the actual aircraft (when it reflects the radar beam). MKI beats FC-1 in almost all departments.
