Eh? Better aerodynamics, sure. Better ECM suite? Quite likely vis a vis the baseline SH. But better radar? First time I’m hearing of this argument. Conventional wisdom pretty much skews the other way.

I do not really care about “conventinal wisdom”. Some modes are still lacking on RBE2 AESA (will come with F3R standard, but pilots and Thalès ppl are adamant about it. They expected similar performances, but in the end (due to UMS modules) performances are way above apg79 (sensitivity etc.)

What are modular engines? Can a module assembly unit from an F414 be put into the ‘modular’ Rafale engine?

LRU modules. And autodiagnostic of modules btw. So no MTBF… No ground retest after dismounting engine and changing one module. Much simpler maintenance.

TBH, There is no real evidence as to why EOTS should be inferior to others IRST like OLS-35 or FSO.. etc in air to air role.

Yes there is. It is derived from an obsolete (although very good) pod. Btw, genuine question. How do these work by night in thery should be “even better”, but…

    S. Korean Parliament Refuses To Hike F-35 Budget

    http://aviationweek.com/defense/s-korean-parliament-refuses-hike-f-35-budget

SEOUL, BEIJING— The South Korean Parliament has refused a defense ministry request to spend 30% more on Lockheed Martin F-35 acquisition in 2017 than originally planned.

But in its budget request the ministry asked for 30% more because the 2017 installment under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales process turned out to be unexpectedly high

    Who said affordable, cheap etc.?

Where does you see a cost equity b/w a Rafale and a ASH?! Modernized Rafale cost 150M$ (india) and this comes Without Conformal fuel tanks (CFT) and stealthy Weapon pod. I won’t even mention the reliability issue with a matured fleet-wide aircraft and systems on one side, and last call improvisations on the other at a time when the Fr industry doesn’t shine on the reliability front (Thank you Airbus!).

F-18 E/F aerodynamic issues explain its pityful range (considering its size) and the need for CFTs. You are contradicting yourself comparing a “fleet wide” paperplane (ASH) with a reliable, efficient design (Rafale). Not to s&y about superior data fusion and SA, embedded ECM suite, superior aerodynamics, better radar (better modules and signal treatment), longer range and persistance, modular architecture, modular engines, better missiles, Grandad (F-18) was certainly good workhorse, but not as gifted as Rafale.

I think they should’ve never got the 29ks and go for the rafale Ms in the first place.

29 K was mandatory with carrier… Gorshkov Lifts are too small for Rafale M anw

Parhaps it wouldn’t be operational for up to a decade be not for lack of small missile system to defend itself, a limited ability to launch sorties and no defined strategy for how to use the ship in combat. Those issue are either easily rectified (note the installation of Barak 1 and AK630 on Vikramaditya, which are systems dismounted from the Godavari frigate upon retirement) or choice (Vikramaditya also has a limited ability to launch sorties, given similar layout, likewise Liaoning and Kuznetsov). As for strategy, India has has a long time objective of 3 carriers (so 1 available on each coast, with 1 extra under maintenance) > blablabla

    Liaoning was massively updated since.

so the other thread said IN doesnt want the Naval Tejas

everyone was saying the IAF had a grudge against HAL and were slowly dragging out the Tejas procurement
but here comes the IN effectively ending it

not too many options for a stobar. just MiG-29K or F-35B?

Insistent rumours here (i repeat, rumours) of IN negociating with DA to replace in a first step coastal Sqds of Mig 29 with Rafale and then placing them on IAC1/2

    Friday, 2 December 2016:
At Gifu AB, Gifu Prefecture, Defense Minister Inada Tomomi inspected the stealth fighter X-2 Shinshin.
She also flew in the transport aircraft C-2.

Good news here also (as FX-2 stealthiness was tested here) 😉

Based on Boeing PR effort they claim it to be 20% above that of a current block Super Hornet That’s as close one’s going to get short of an actual deal.

So roughly on par with Rafale, interesting times to come.

Reports pilot missed wires and failed to power up for second pass rather than broken arresting wire.

Tass quote from MoD does not state cause. Correction-the release said broken arresting wire.

I’ve read 1900L, although to be honest i’m dubious as it should use the same old Douglas envelope. Development given to Intertechnique.

That is obviously not true as Hood stated otherwise (that is not my opinion, that is the opinion of the RCAF).

Sorry but i have to disagree. Hood stated that CF-118 fleet could last over 2025. Which doese not mean there is no urgent requirement for some more (modern?) planes.
