Only the UK [MoD] would scrap a perfectly capable and modern batch of fighters… Only the UK… Logic means something, can’t, quite… think what.

Don’t worry, we have the same on the other side of the channel

Where did you get those figures? They’re not what Dassault says, or anyone else who might credibly claim to have any inside information.

It’d be a remarkable feat to get a 14000 kg empty weight aircraft to deliver 7200 kg of bombs (& externally carried, at that) 4000 km away from its base (& get home again afterwards!), without tankers taking off from enough places along the route that it would have been much easier to simply base it further forward – & as I said, there are no special French laws of physics. One wonders why this remarkable aircraft wasn’t bought en masse by France’s allies. They should have been fighting to be first in the queue.

i’ll check that tomorrow. Too late tonight…

They should join FCAS program as “rank 1” partners (but no source codes!) :eagerness:

    Waterloo, he who laughs last…

In Waterloo english were far from alone. Ever heard about Blucher and prussian, german and nederlands army?

Nvm done with this thread, really asking myself why moderators didn’t simply cut it off, it can only conclude in endless sterile flamewars.

I thik there is a doctrine gap here. French will destroy sam sites only if needed (and they did) but usually do not use strictly speaing SEAD/DEAD missions.
So in the US view they did not perform sead missions.

The AASM production order has been hugely scaled back since then. Less than even the interim order of 2348 units. As a consequence, the unit cost is likely to be significantly greater today, even with supplementary orders from Egypt & Qatar.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Sagem’s Armement Air-Sol Modulaire (AASM) Hammer SBU-38 precision guided munition (PGM) has been successfully launched from a Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon, the first launch of the PGM from a non-French made aircraft.

The firing test was carried out by the US Air Force’s (USAF’s) 40th Flight Test Squadron, operating out of the test centre in Eglin, Florida, on 30 May, sources told IHS Jane’s .

This successful launch is of key importance to Sagem in enabling it to offer the AASM to export customers equipped with the F-16. Currently, the only customer for the AASM is France which operates the PGM from its Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft. However, France’s order was dramatically reduced due to budgetary constraints from a planned 4,200 units to only 1,728 – meaning the company needs to find an export customer before mid-2016 in order to keep its production line open.

Sagem have designed the AASM to be compliant with NATO Universal Armament Interface (NUAI) standards – aimed at facilitating the functional integration of new weapons, without modification to the aircraft, and therefore reduce associated adaptation costs. This allowed the AASM to be fired by the USAF F-16, with the firing taking part due to French and United States participation in a NATO ‘Smart Defence’ project dedicated to the NUAI standard. This project also involves the NUAI programme office at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

New order under LPM 2016 (160 i think)

Why compare two different class/objectives weapons?

Yes, the Rafale is more flexible regarding a2g. I don’t dispute that. My point is, that for bombing tactical camels and technicals expansive weapons may not always be the first choice. Right after Libya many stories popped up about Adla beeing interested in Brimstone, laser guided missiles and what not. I’m not aware of any contract signed covering such items.

Typhoon on the other hand is earmarked for Brimstone and there is the contract for the triple/double racks. Looks to me like a very solid upgrade path. Coming back to the Libya scenario: Brimstone + Paveways are easier on the budget than AASM + Paveways.

France has earmarked BLU as urgent stopgap weapon.

Iran just came back inthe “concert of nations”. I doubt they will quickly rebuild their air force.

Brilliant! Ignoring 35 pages of posts with details and arguments with actual analysis, you came up with the perfect summary of the ignorance displayed by those who love flashy headlines.

Bit heavy on the sarcasm, but really, there has been enough written, enough articles published, regarding the F-35 test report. There is no excuse for just reading a headline and drawing such an absurd conclusion.

BTW, there have been plenty of press releases about flights of F-35’s dominating F-16s in exercises. Can we draw up an overarching conclusion from that too? Hmmm.

Sadly, even defense reporting has become the twitterverse: 100 flashy words to summarize so people don’t have to research and think for themselves.

Shouldn’t this thread be closed for sterility and arising ranting? Just a question
