I have still not seen or heard anything about this in the UK media. How poor is that?
I wish them the best of luck but must admit that this kind of thing makes me extremely nervous.

Think I read somewhere that the Americans used helicopter pilots initially for the Harriers, with disastrous results. Perhaps they had overlooked the fact that it is a fast jet when not hovering / pretending to be a helicopter.

There is a little bit more info on the slip wing Hurricane on this site:
http://www.faqs.org/docs/air/avhurr.html#m5
The top wing contained extra fuel tanks – wouldn’t the fuel lines and weight complicate the release further?
Rejected due to being too heavy.
Stuart
Quick couple of questions about the Hurricane with the jettisonable top wing:
1. Would there not be a danger of it hitting the tail after release?
2. Would the release have to be made when inverted?

This is a very interesting subject. I think that the Wrights must still be regarded officially as the first to fly because their flight is the earliest that can be proved to have actually taken place from the film and photographic evidence. Until proved otherwise, the others must remain theories but very interesting theories at that.
Speaking of theories, an elderly relative from Northern Ireland swears that there was someone from there that actually flew first. Don’t know any details i’m afraid. Has anybody else heard this?

Looks like it was used as a waiting room for people queing for the bog! 😀
Bit cold for an outhouse isn’t it? 😮

A tenner says that it will NEVER fly.
Any takers?
All winnings to be donated to the Sally B Supporters Club.
I’ll have a piece of that. It wouldn’t surprise me if the project was delayed and suffered cost overruns etc but I do believe they will succeed. Best of luck to them, I have never seen a Vulcan fly and would travel a long way to see it (although thankfully Bruntingthorpe is only an hour or so for me). I will also donate any winnings to the Sally B Supporters Club.

Thanks Bruce, nice to see that BAS were so keen to preserve the aircraft and acted quickly to save it at the expense of their own time and money.
Stuart
Good work, well done to all. Do I take it that the Americans were planning to recover the aircraft without BAS’s permission? Surely that would be theft.
How many Otters are left in the world? Is this the only one in the UK?
Stuart
Would that be noises from Sally B’s engines 😀 or from her supporters?

Wish i’d been listening. I must admit that I don’t know much about the insurance industry but if it is like many others, it will be dominated by some very large US corporations. Would one of these not be interested in providing the insurance in some sort of sponsorship deal / charitable donation?
Considering the profits of some of these financial institutions, it would be a drop in the ocean and the least that they could do to give something back. Good PR as well.

The aviation gallery at the Science Museum is well worth a visit at any time. My evil employers sent me to work in Knightsbridge recently for three weeks, just around the corner from the Science Museum. Spent many lunch breaks browsing the collection (free admission). Apart from the many historic aircraft from WW1 and WW2, there is also a great collection of engines, including many British, American, German and Japanese piston engines of WW2. I Was surprised to find an Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar there, having read a thread on here about the great scarcity of these engines and nobody had mentioned this one.

That almost certainley means you were the 10,208th person that joined the supporters club, membership numbers being consecutive. That doesn’t mean there are that many members currently paid up…
A motor club I am a member of has about 200 paid up members, but the most recent allocated membership number was 3100 and something…… 😉
I’m sure that you’re right about that Firebird, although I hope the Sally B Supporters Club has a rather better retention rate of members than your motor club! Anyone know the current membership? Gained a few as a result of all this I hope 🙂 .
Stuart
Could it have been Jumpin Jacques or Miss Helen? Both are silver and blue.
Speaking of which, is Miss Helen up and about yet after last year’s mishap?
Stuart
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the comments. Got both bits of info from my Sally B supporters club membership card (always carried in my wallet), which has (eek!) just expired at the end of April 05. Where’s my cheque book?
Anyway, my membership number (allocated five years ago) is 10208. I added a couple of thousand to cover new memberships. Obviously, this makes a few slightly dodgy assumptions, like all members renew their membership (on time!) every year, which although they clearly should is not necessarily the case. Perhaps somone in the know could provide the exact number to make other letters more accurate.
The card says on it “USAAF WWII Memorial Flight”.
If, like me, you discover your membership to this very worthy cause has lapsed – renew it today.
