VSS and SCS
Here are the drawings of the various Sea Control Ship versions I have made so far with my interpretation of the VSS.
Pioneer, you are right that SeaSparrow would have been an option, but Friedman mentiones only two CIWS. But I wroteabout 2 canisters of Harpoon and I have no idea were to put them – so I left them out.
The failure of the Rockwell VTOL fighter is a real pitty. The VTOL scene would have changed considerably if this and some of the other designs would have been realized.
MRD 10000
Hi!
Nice to have you back on the board!
I am looking forward to lot’s of nice pictures 😉
This MRD 10000 would be a very interesting design for many navies.
Perhaps one day this is the first german flattop?
A fake? How made?
I have the impression that the radars are a mixture of the superstructure of Charles de Gaulle and Kuznezov but perhaps it is an indigenous structure?
aircraft carrier shirang?
Hello!
looking around in the web – for korean designs I found this page:
http://www.powercorea.com
Here you can see a picture of Varyag equipped with radars named shirang in the yard in Dalian. The picture seems very interesting as it is the first I have ever seen with radars. Do you think it is real or a fake?
It seems to be a possible look. She still rides high in the water.
Any thoughts?
VSS I
Hi!
The Vertical Support Ship was a development of the Sea Control Ship and should have had around 30.000 ts.
I tried to draw one as I think it would have looked together with various Sea Control Ships. There were also studies of a VSS operationg S-3 Vikings and Corsairs. I have no idea how they would have looked like – perhaps an Reversed Angle Carrier with the landing strip were the take of line of my drawing is?
What do you think? Does anybody have information about this ship?
There were further designs VSS II and VSS III with a deck edge lift. These I will draw in the next weeks.
Here are other versions
An older version of a steam powered and later gasturbine powered versions as I think they would have looked like.
Today they would have been nice ships for UAV I think.
Enjoy

I have a different theory. The Hyuga was designed with the F35B in mind but it is not able to operate it in relevant numbers. It might be a “political trial ship”.
They build a flat top looking like an aircraft carrier without beeing one. It only “operates 4 helicopters”. If everbody got used to it they start trials with F35B. If the trials prove that the aircraft is suitable and the public has accepted F 35B the admirals claim that the ship is too small to operate the aircraft in adequate numbers. Furthermore they will note that China starts successful trials and operations with Varyag. Then it is time to build a “real carrier”. .. Perhaps they built a ship with british assistance like 100 years before (Kongo class battlecruisers) but this time a CVF 😉 ???
INS Vikramaditya delayed until 2011
If I am not totally mistaken all this might result in no carrier at all for the Indian Navy in the next years? I have read that the Viraat has problems due to her age. Vikramaditya is delayed – perhaps the whole project might bei deleted?
What is your impression?
Soviet aircraft carrier pr. 1153
Thank’s a lot for this great drawing.
It is really nice how terribly bad pictures of models change into nice drawings giving a great impression of this ship.

MEKO X and D
Hi logan
Thats what I could offer. They are drawings of Mihoshik.
“Nordrhein-Westfalen” is a vision of him.
Enjoy
BTW here is a link were you can find several hundred of these drawings, the majority by MConrads and Mihoshik. Some are from me – I like the “never wheres” because here you can guess how a ship would have looked like.
In the sections “Things that help drawing” there are dozens of radars, guns and aircraft that help drawing 😉

I am planning to do further drawings but perhaps you can imagine that it needs many hours. I have a job and a family and it will last several weeks until the next drawing of the port side will be ready. I do about half an hour to one hour of drawing each day. For this kind of drawing you need patience, good fotos and time. The first two I have more then the last one. During the next week I will probably finish the starboard side as she looked 1966 to 1970 – so be patient and don’t give up the hope. When I have finished these drawings I probably know the exterior of Hermes more then some who served on her 😉 But that’s fun.
Perhaps others like to join MConrads and Mihoshiks drawing club. It is really relaxing. After some minutes of drawing I start to look for every detail in dozens of pictures and that helps to forget the daily “noise” of the job or other things that might circulate in ones brain. Perhaps that’s why others start playing computer games 😉 For those not so obsessed with certain real ships: it is even more fun to draw “Never weres”.

Hi MConrads!
I too like this drawing and I like it more then the more modern designs. “Older” designs like the Knoxes are really demanding because of all the details they have. And I like the way you squeeze every detail into a drawing of this scale.
The Drawings in Combat Ships of the World, Janes Fighting Ships or Weyers Flottentaschenbuch are less detailed. Perhaps others feel encouraged to start drawing.
BTW The Knoxes are nearly as fascinating as the Leanders 😉
Cavour now is only F35B (and Harrier) capable.
But I don’t think that the Italien Navy bought such an expensive ship without the chance to use other aircraft later.
When the Harriers will be phased out ( in 15 years? – does anybody know?) She might be due for a midlife refit.
I think it could be possible to add an angled deck, a catapult and delete the ski jump. The ship has a Flightdeck lenght very close to Eagle and Ark Royal. The Aster launcher is to the portside (in earlier design it was on the starbordside) and the after lift is a deck edge lift. The front lift would not disrupt the runway. The only problem might be the big superstructure but even the exhaust pipes are angled out to starbord. So I think that the italian Navy was wise enough not to rely only on F35b.
Any thoughts?
Hello everybody!
While you discuss developments in the far East – top secret designs have escaped form german drawing boards 😉
Happy New Year 2007
The discussion about Jeanne de Arc and Vittorio Veneto inspired me to modfiy a drawing of MConrads :-))
