    AWD

I think the graphik desiger was drunk.
After all the ships seems to be looking like the KDX III or japanese destroyers and they both look really impressive. If the graphik designer isn’t the one who is designing the ship it might be really impressive. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Aircrew numbers

Thanks a lot badger for the explanition.
It is always nice to be able to get an answer by somebody who really should know it.

    May be a stupid question

    Hello Bager!

I asked myself various times and no I dare ask somebody who should know it.
How many pilots/crews are assign to one plane?
On the aircraft their can be read the name of one pilot. There could be a different name on the other side: if a plane makes two or even three missions a day this seems too much for one pilot so there should be at least two crews for each plane -could you tell me?

    Iwo Jima successor

    Hi tiddles!

It is nice that I delight you with graphics you have been looking for – a few will follow in the next time, but I am afraid I have used most of my small carrier ammunition. Perhaps I encourage other to open their stocks too ๐Ÿ˜‰

The LHDX design was the competitor to the WASP design as fas as I know. Perhaps it was offered to Australia, but I never read any indication of that. The time suggests it but I don’t know.
The other designs in the other post I have not send because of the catamaran but because of the V-VAC which shows the cutaway stern. Removing all this seemed a hard job – but probably not impossible.

    Vickers design

    Hello Ronoo!

Thanks for the infos. That really sounds versatile. On this board on another thread I found this drawing which shows the V-VAC. Here you can see the cutaway stern. It sounds really incredible that all these structures should be removable. 30 to 40 m of various decks is a lot. Well, it depends on the time you are willing to accept for this operation. I read that diesel propulsion was planned.
The idea of this design sounds interesting.

    IWO JIMA mod.

    Hello Tiddles!

Thanks for the info! It sound like an interesting looking design. Perhaps after solving your problems you can delight us with this design? Meanwhile I found another small design which as far as I know was planned as the sucessor of the IWO JIMA class. The drawing appeared in a german magazine named Marinerundschau which terminated about 10 years ago. It was to be about 25.000 ts (by Lockheed and obviously lost against the Wasp design) – thats all I know
I hope you enjoy this new finding.

    Further designs

Perhaps I should explain the designs:

The artists impression is the MAC ship โ€“probably the ship tiddles mentioned: 181m*32,5 (probably over all) 12.500 ts (seems rather small?)
Does anybody have pictures of the McMullen design or the Iwo Jima mod mentioned by tiddles?

The bad drawing to the right is also the MAC ship. I have problems with this drawing because the bridge structure seems too big. Somebody mailed me this design.

The next on the right is a design by Vickers from July 1981. The aim was a cheaper design than the Invincible. The source is a “Warships” magazine of the early 80ies.

The last design is a V-VAC which I have also seen with a cutaway stern. It is also a british design. I donโ€™t remember the yard. The book where I scanned the picture is I borrowed to a friend so I cannot tell the yard.

    Position of lift

    Hello Badger!

I like your idea of rebuilding a Colossus class carrier. An interesting what if design could be Leviathan finished in the early 70’ies – capable of carrying Super Etendard perhaps the first German Carrier in cooperation with France?
Another interesting conversion could be 25 de Mayo with new engines in the early 90’ies.
Your attempt to replace the after elevator on the starbord edge seems logical.
On the other side I am afraid that it would not have worked. The lift is only two decks above sealevel. This seems too little. If I am not mistaken only the Iwo Jima Class and Conte di Cavour have a deckedgelift that close to sealevel.
Do you know The book “Rebuilding the Royal Navy” by Brown and Moore?
There is a description of the problems of rebuilding a ship with a closed hangar with a deck edge lift. It causes structural problems. It was difficult to fit into Hermes and in Ark Royal it was abandoned after some years of service with a deckedge lift.

    AndersN lenghened CTOL Cavour

    Hello AndersN and Tiddles!

When I was asking weather the design is workable I meant the Cavour CTOL AndersN now tried to improve.
I think that AndersN’s design will be a workable design. The catapult is ok, the runway has the 200m and the arrestor wires are not so close to the stern as in the design I found.
I guess the design would be very close to Charles de Gaulle in size but far inferior. It shows why US carriers are as big as they are,
You have one catapult on this size – well you could add a waist catapult and have a deck layout as Eagle or Ark Royal in the 60’ies and 70’ies. The flight deck is very small for the length – just compare to Charles de Gaulle. I think the current CVF designs are supperior – the size makes them flexible.
By the way this design is a really big design – we started with 8000ts.
For a CTOL carries I think the Bazan BSAC 220 and the DCN design for India are the smallest possible – probably without the Hawkeye Option. I think 25.000 or even 30.000 ts is the minimum for a workable design (Something like Hermes or Foch with a larger angled deck).

    CTOL Conte di Cavour

Although I realy like the idea of small carriers I think the design I send will not work, because the angled deck is too short. Charles de Gaulle showed that for operating a Hawkeye 200 m are the minimum. For a Rafale or a JSF I don’t know the necessary runway but it can’t be much less. The US-Navy carriers have a lot more. Does annybody know if this design really has a chance to work?

    Bremer Vulkan redrawn

As the quality of the scan of the 8000ts design for Thailand was in bad quality I tried to reconstruct the design.
    Here is the result
