    Gripen, Conte di Cavour

In another forum there was a rather exiting discussion about a Gripen-N presented in Farnborough. I very much would like a sucessor of the Skyhawk A-4. But Gripen – N meant Norway and not navalised.
Some time ago I found a design of a CTOL Conte di Cavour and a ADS with very much Fincantieri design.
I would very much like some 25.000 ts carries like BSAC 220 (designed by Bazan some ten years ago)with Gripen-Na but I am afraid we will never see that.
Here is the CTOL Andrea Doria and the Fincantieri ADS

    ADS size and origin

    Hello Storch and qantaz!

The ADS has a long history which can be read on the following link:

    http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/ADS.html

So the french design was 25.000ts, it started with even smaller ones and after years Fincantieri came into the story with it’s design. Now the ADS ship has grown and has more then dobbled it’s size from the first designs. After many years pf planning steelcutting started a few months ago.

    Hello Gollevainen!

I too miss a foto from the front and I hope that somebody has found one and posts it. I think the bow would have looked like the Foch and the bridge a bit like Mistral and Tonnere.

    ADS

Voila, this is the design by the french yard DCN for the indian ADS. It is said to be around 25.000 ts and should reach 30kn. As far as I know the propulsion should have consisted of 4 GT GE 2500. Two catapults. All in all I have the impression of a modernised Foch – design.
I added some pictures of the current design (one was colored by me to make for easier studying)

Do others have more or better pictures?

    shiplovers fantasy design

    Hello tiddles!

You are right that the forward position is not ideal. The Ryujo – which inspired me got the bridge crushed by a typhoon. The bow was rised one deck and the problem never reoccured (see pictures of 1933 and 1938). On the other side it might be great fun plowing the waves on this bridge. Many passenger ships have the bridge very far forward.
What I was thinking when I made this design was, that the CIC perhaps should be more in the middle and further below deck to reduce the motion ( those are the other blue areas below deck between diesel engine and munition depot). The position of the bridge is not too bad and can be seen in other designs I added to this response – the japanese liked this design feature.

    Paralays fantasy carrier

That was really a good joke 🙂 . The link of your design leads to a russian page which needs long times to upload and has the disadvantage that I cannot read (neither speak) russian. Could you give as the direct link where the interesting designs are?
Your design reminded me of a project I found on another board which was no joke. It was meant to be a small escort carrier named “reverse angle carrier”. This ship must have had great difficulties in handling returning aircraft. So it was not meant to be an attack carrier but probably only had surveilance aircraft and hunters. Perhaps it was a derivative of the VSS – itself an enlarged SCS?

    Bremer Vulkan design

The history behind Chakri Naruebeth is long.

Various Yards made offers for a small carrier for the Thai Navy. I heard of HDW (Howaldts Werke Deutsche Werft) in Kiel (but know nothing about the design) and the offer of Bremer Vulkan is known. Bremer Vulkan made various designs – obviously slowly increasing in size.

The design “Probable first design” is the first as far as I know.
Then came the ship which is shown as model HC 600 PT2 and the HC 600 PT. When I received the news that the project was cancelled the design was the BVEntwurf8000v92 of 8000 ts. It was cancelled in 1992 if I remember correctly
The project was cancelled by Bremer Vulkan due to german export legislation. The ship would have been the first Aircraftcarrier completed in Germany and the german government made life difficult for Bremer Vulkan. Furthermore Bremer Vulkan came into serious trubbles due to subsidies paid for a Yard in Eastern Germany after the reunification of Germany. These subsidies and other money where not used correctly. A short time later Bremer Vulkan went bancrupt and the result was a scandal in the German Yard industry.

Then it was Bazan – later IZAR which built Chakri Na.

Here are drawings of the Bremer Vulkan designs (“Helicopter Carrier Family”) with the technical data. There is also a 11.000 ts project but I don’t know if this was ever considered for Thailand (probably yes). The project “helicopter support ship” seems to be the 8.000 ts design with a Vickers 114mm gun.
I think the best ship for Thailand would have been the design which is shown as a model and is the HC 600 PT. It would have a reasonable armament and 6 helicopters. I think the Thai Navy is not vary happy with it’s Harriers.

The HC 500 design which I send yesterday of 5000 ts was – as far as I know – never mentioned as a design for Thailand but probaly was also considered.

Well, I hope I told you some interesting things.

    Bremer Vulkan 5000ts design

    Hello tiddles!

This is the Bremer Vulkan design – the smallest version of various designs. It has 5000 ts and is diesel propelled. I have further Bremer Vulkan designs and will send them tomorrow if anybody is interested.

    Enjoy

    Incat Carrier

These incat Carriers are really futuristic designs. But I don’t understand what they should be useful for.
If I understand the plans correctly there is very little room for a reasonable complement. The ship looks for me as one which should rush to Indonesia throw some bombs on a target and then return home before the crew needs some rest. But what if the ship should be patrolling for weeks? What if it should sustain CAP for several days? What if the aircraft need some repairing or if several crew members are injured?
A conventional carrier of perhaps an unconventional designs to me seems more reasonable (like this strange russian 9000 ts design up in this thread)

Where can I find such plans with a higher resolution? In the drawing I cannot recognize much because it is really tiny.
A very interesting design seems the corsair projet of the US-Navy some years ago.

    Design of JSF – Carrier

For rhose who were interested in my idea of the JSF Carrier:

The design is just a concept and was stopped some time ago because of my increasing daubts about the JSF in the VSTOL version.
So there are several things that don’t fit – but I think this should be how such a ship should look like in general. It is my own idea inspired by the Harrier carrier and the japanese WWII 10.000 ts carrier Ryujo which had the bridge on the front.
The flight deck of about 200X 35m has a runway on the port side and a landing grid in the middle of the port side (black). The starbordside is for the handling armouring and lining up of aircraft unobstructed by a bridge structure, which is on the front just beneath the flight deck. The flyco is the tower on the starbord front. It can overlook the flightdeck and the skijump. I have a VLS in the deck drawing which I decided to delete in the meantime because it interferes to much with the aircraft operations and the hullstructure.
On the stern are two gasturbine generators for boost, seperated by a large area for loading and unloading through the stern. Between the lifts on the starbord side is an area for UACV which are smaller then conventional aircraft.
On the front is the brigde and the CIC in dark blue
One deck below in front of the Gas Turbine generators are green boxes which are meant to be containers with aircraft equipment for easy change of the aircraft dotation.
The hangars are in light blue.
Below the hangar deck are cabins and in dark green the messes and the wardrooms.
One deck below are: orange: aircraft fuel, red: ammunition, blue: ship control and orange: diesel engines. Dark green are the stores.
The beam at the waterline would be around 25m and the displacement would be that of the colossus class. The ship could be the successor for 25 de Mayo, Vikrant etc.

I really think this would be a useful design for smaller navies if the JSF will be produced. But in the meantime I think an adaptable carrier would be better because there might be no VTOL aircraft in the future.

    Any thoughts or questions?

    JSF Carrier

Have you been thinking of something like this?

There are several mistakes because it is not finished – these are ideas how the ship should look like – it is several months old.
    Principle ideas:
8 JSF and two AEW and one SAR in the hangar, two gasturbines for maximum speed, diesels for transit and electricity.
Brigde and Flyco on the front on starbord to have unobstructed flight deck.
The result was a design of about 15.000 ts std. and 200m in length (JSF is considerably larger then Sea Harrier).
It could operate 8 JSF in the hangar and the same on deck. The Harrier Carrier stowed 8 in the Hangar and could have operated more on deck – depending on the weather.
The ship comes very close to the Sea Control Ship of 30 years ago.
    Any thoughts – or questions?

Could “paralay” please  tell what is the story behind this strange design?
It seems rather futuristic and I don’t know how this ship should work.

    Thanks for the welcome!
I studied the small carriers thread a while ago. But thanks for the tip.

Here are further information of the Harrier Carrier I found on another board:

It is a design I like very much (that’s why tried some coloring a while ago) – too sad that none was built.
I read of plans of Shah – Iran buying up to 4 of these ships.
Then he was more in favour of Invincibles an then – we all know it was time to go.

    Plans of Minas Gerais

    Hello board members!

I am new and start my first attempt posting here. I hope it will work – if not please don’t kill me.
I am interested in aircraft carriers – especially small ones and never wheres.
I very much like the Colossus/Majestic classes and it is very sad that Minas Gerais and 25 de Mayo have gone.

Here is a link to plans of Minas Gerais.
Most decks are copied. The quality is not the best but very detailed. The plans do not exactly fit the true ship because the guns are to a different (earlier?) plan.
The other pages are nice but sad too, because she has been scrapped last year. They will help to check badger1968 ideas to refit Melbourne or Minas Gerais.

    Enjoy to study the plans
