Flybe, when known as British European, had an incident in 2000 where the First Officer was having difficulty concentrating while flying the approach and so had to hand control over to the Captain. The Captain then had to land the aircraft while feeling light headed and unable to judge height properly. Both the FO and Captain were said to have been affected by cabin air contamination due to leaking fumes from the APU into the ECS.

I’ve read about other similar incidents too. It’s worrying that this has been able to go on for so long with seemingly little done about it. Especially as Cabin air contamination presents hazards at two levels: The long-term health of crews from low level but constant air contamination; and Flight Safety due to the potential incapacitation of flight crews in the event of large amounts of fumes entering the cabin.

Anyone reckon this is as far as they will be painted up? logo on each ex BACON aircraft?

Yeah, I don’t think they will go much further than this with the c/s because they plan to get rid of the entire BACON fleet and replace them with the E-195 and Q400.

Don’t see why CDG should replace AMS, both have operated quite happily up here for a few years now, since AF returned to the route.

I was just thinking that with easyJet’s competition for point to point traffic on BRS-AMS, KLM would probably carry a very high proportion of transfer traffic rather than O&D, in which case AF and KLM would be ‘competing’ to a certain extent for connecting traffic at their respective hubs. Depends on the KLM route’s O&D/transfer ratio though, and I don’t have those figures so it’s just speculation.

Maybe it’s part of the route network restructuring after the KLM-Air France merger as KLM have had an AMS-BRS feeder for years. Perhaps it will replace the KLM service? Anyone know of plans for the AMS route to be dropped?

Hi, could someone please confirm that the MAN meet is still going ahead on the 1st August as I’m thinking of coming. Are the spotting areas within walking distance of the terminal or is there transport?

in reply to: Is fleet/Pilot commonality overhyped? #554706

I think fleet commonality is just one of many factors that need to be considered by fleet planners, and it’s prominence in forum discussions by enthusiasts is excaberated by the fact that it’s a very simple and easy concept to understand. Other possible factors that are taken into consideration by fleet planners may be so complex that many enthusiasts don’t have the time/ability to understand them, so this has led to the fleet commonality factor being used disproportionately to other factors in discussions.

The importance of fleet commonality of course is likely to vary greatly in each specific situation. Internal organisational factors such as the size of the airline (larger airlines may be able to absorb the costs of a second fleet type better than smaller airlines), and factors in the external environment such as oil prices (compromise commonality for gains in efficiency from a different, new type of aircraft) will affect the priority of fleet commonality in the complex equations fleet planners are likely to use.

Without the unfair tactics from his competition and the strict regulations at the time, Laker would not only have been able to continue the transatlantic Skytrain operation, but also would have been able to create the first european low-cost airline – over a decade before Ryanair introduced the LCC to europe with the benefit of a much more ‘LCC-friendly’ regulatory environment. This was one of his plans before the fall of Laker Airways.

Capacity purchase agreement (CPA). Does this mean that the regional airline would recieve its revenue on the basis of the capacity it provides to the airline it is feeding, and not on the basis of number of passengers flown? So a similar agreement to a wet-lease charter?

Very well. If you think Economy is good, why would you ever pay the Business or, worse, First Class fares?

Legacy carrier who offers too much frills in Economy would be in danger that both it costs a lot to provide frills to Economy, and that people no longer want to pay for Business even if they could afford to.

There is still a huge gap in terms of service and comfort between a good economy product and a business class product.

I’ve bought both issues of AOTW and it is a very good magazine. I agree with Wozza on the point about featuring UK regional Airports – especially Exeter. Not only is it my local airport, but it is also for sale and once it has been purchased, I’m sure the new owners will have plenty of expansion plans (new terminal?) which could be discussed in the magazine.

Good luck to him, but I’m not very optimistic about it. The fares will be significantly higher than other larger and more established low-cost airlines. The difference from other low costs appears to be the slightly longer routes to the canaries, and these longer routes will mean that less sectors can be flown by each aircraft per day. This will also mean higher costs and therefore higher fares. It depends on whether people will be willing to pay significantly more to fly to these slightly further destinations compared with easyJet’s mainland Spain/Portugal destinations for much less.
They will also have the charter seat-only flights as competition which already offers services to this type destinations.

On the news he was saying how he thought there was a gap in the market for these services but I don’t really see it.
