    The story is incredible…. Brief details as follows;

After being shot down Flt Lt Miller DFC (Pilot) was last to leave the Lancaster. As he bailed out it exploded and he woke up hanging upside down in a tree by his Parachute.

He then “civilianised” his clothing, including removing the tops of his escape boots (the shoe parts of which he kept and i now have). During his “Evasion” he stole a German Solders bike from outside an Inn and spent time on his journey doing as much damage as he could to German communications (telephone wires etc). He joined the French resistance for period and caused so much mahem, a bounty was put on his head by Klaus Barbie (The Butcher of Lyon). He eventually crossed the Alps (on foot) and was interned in Switzerland. He finished the war on Spitfires with 614 Squadron.

One amazing thing was a Telegram he sent to his Mother whilst on the run, it read ” Been shot down but ok. Can you collect my Bike and Camera from Squadron.

He sadly died about 6 years ago. A truely remarkable story and remarkable man.

Guys, your missing the point here!!

Any Tom, Dick or Harry could quite easily buy the Harrier, get it airworthy, lean how to fly it, purchase the ammunition and cause havoc 😀

If there first target was those Neo Nazi’s, why stop it 😉

My good friend, the late F/O Gordon Beston took part in the Bombing of Dresden as a Bomb Aimer with 106 Squadron. He was reading an article in a news paper on the subject, and i asked him what he felt about the fact he had taken part?

His answer……They Bloody started it !

    Say no more.

I’m probably going to rattle a few cages now…but you should be made aware that some instrument faces, expecially WW2 are painted with a Radium type paint which is a bit naughty!

I completed a Mk 1 Hurricane panel, then on the advice from a friend borrowed a Geiger Counter. The panel was sold a few days later, along with a collection of WW2 German instruments that faired much worse when tested!

Some will say it’s a storm in a tea cup, but from what i witnessed, it wasnt worth the risk!

No idea re the crash site, but an interesting item emerged during a book launch that i had put a display on for in Steeple Morden in the early 1990’s. A local resident walked in with a huge panel c/w full Baulken Cross from a German plane he claimed was Hess’s 110??

About 7 years ago i contacted the guy with the relic, but he then claimed it was only loaned to him at the time and no longer had it??

As i saw it with my own eyes, i can confirm that the piece does indeed exist and that it looked 100% genuine. As to whether or not it came from the Hess 110???

    Yes, “B” Bertie was ME789 coded ZN-B.

    Icare9,

Yes that would make sense. Strange how they never informed their Bomb Aimer of their departure??

    David,

The entry in the 97 ORB’s ties in perfectly date wise with the Log book.

Absolutely fantastic guys. A 66 year mystery finally solved.

Unfortunatly F/Lt Gordon Beston who’s Log Book this was, died in Spetember 2009 aged 87 years. He had always wondered about the fate of his original crew and i have spent hours searching records etc to try and find the information he sought. It’s a real shame i didnt find this forum before he died.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Ross….Thats them, fantastic mate!!

I have found the entry in Bomber Command Losses and De Belleroche’s crew is exactly the same as in 106 squadons ORB for the time my friend flew with them (Bomb Aimer is different of course). Great work! Im really impressed and very greatfull, thank you.

So they ended up at 97 Squadron! What would be the reason for the squadron move?? How can i find out if they went direct to this squadron or somewhere else inbetween??

    Thanks

    Peter,

Does it have white painted numbers on the edge of each of those teeth (or the remains of them?). The reason i ask is that i found a very similar item on a Lancaster site which turned out to be from the Bomb Selector Panel.

We stayed in the Caravan park, just opposite the museum a couple of years ago. I went to have a look around and the Curator did not seem in very good health then, so no surprise he has given it up.

Hopefully the tail section will now go undercover as the years of being outside were certainly taking there toll.

I have a 3ft section of Geodetic from this Wellington. Bought at Whitwick Aerojumble several years ago.

    Thanks Alan,

Of all the things i’ve imagined it means over the years…..the paint finish code was never one of them!!! Is it just the first line that is relevent to the paint finish?
