And just when i was beginning to think it was all over

Joe…you are reading too much into that drawing!! The data plate is shown as a solid block, it’s position and orientation is unlikely to be accurate.

    Brian, sorry and point taken.

I’m a bit tetchy since Flying Pencils statement “This is not a DO17z hatch” when he clearly was not sure, so should not have made such a statement 😡

I have owned, and seen quite a lot of rubbish over the years, so to be given something from such a watertight source, only for it to be debated to distruction, is somewhat frustrating!

Andy knows his stuff and has added, as well as others, some good positive information, which will compliment the parts, so i’m happy. Still be good to get a photo though.

I don’t understand why some of you just don’t want this find to be correct??

Would you be happier if i got my Nitromores and a wire brush out then gave it a nice fresh coat of RLM65???

The panel is VERY dirty and grimey as can been seen from the photo. The tiny area i cleaned, and it was tiny, looks spot on to Andys swatch.

Although i said i wouldnt…i did clean a tiny area with some water last night, and the colour beneath the grime is much lighter. I am tempted to clean the whole panel, but like the thought that the grime has been caused by the exhaust gas during several trips over the channel in 1940!! 😀

I agree with Andy (only cos i want a cheap stall at Shoreham :D) re the drawing. And an important note is just that, it’s a drawing, not a photograph! I’m sure the accuracy of such a small part of the aircraft (corner radius and data plate placement) would not have been of major importance?

    Andy,

    Appreciate your input…..thanks.

    Joe,

You asked “So what can we do to verify it’s authenticity”…. The answer to that is “Nothing” as i don’t need to do this, and sorry, but not prepared to conduct needless experiments to prove what i already know and have not asked proof for either!!

I repeat, the authenticity of this piece is NOT in question as far as i’m concerned. I was given this by the son of the man that picked it up at the time, i did not pay ££££ on ebay!! The point i’m making here is neither he, or i have any reason to try and dress this up as something it isnt!

This post was started in the hope i could find where on a DO17z this panel was fitted AND hopefully get a photograph to compliment it.

Thanks everyone for your positive input.

    Richard

    Hi Flying Pencil,

This panel and the data plate were collected by the doners father directly from the crash site in August 1940. His route to work (by Bicycle) took him directly past the crash site. Both items came from the same location and the donors father had no other aircraft parts (or they would have been passed to me). The donor was of course aware of these parts and the location they were recovered from. Unless another German aircraft came down in exactly the same spot later on in the war, i’m afraid you are incorrect and both relics relate to the same aircraft.

It has never been repainted. Perhaps the photo does not show how original it is, but you can clearly see this. It has probably lost it’s original patina, not surprising after 60+ years in storage?? The panel is also very dirty! I could clean a section of it….but i’m not going too! The oversparay on the plate is totally original.

Interestingly, i found a good B/W photo of a Do17 on the website suggested by Thorgil, which shows a hatch in this position WITH what looks like a large rectangular plate attached.

I have no doubt that this is what it is and did not start this post as a debate to its authenticity!

    Lankytim,

They were both picked up by the donors father, who’s cycle route to work, took him directly past the crashsite, so were only a few days out in the open before spending 60+ years in the draw of a side board!! I have attached a photo of the rear which really shows how good the paint finish still is.

    Steve,

Interesting information. Do you think AEG made very few Dornier 17’s then?? The only photo i have been able to find is of the crash site, in the Blitz Then and Now Vol 1.

    Thanks Pete.

Can anybody add anything else or narrow it down a bit? Is it not strange to be yellow tipped on only one side??

    Thanks again

I stayed there 2 years ago when i had a trip in “Just Jane”. I enjoyed the place because of it’s history, however, it’s very dated and smells musty!! The wife was not impressed.
