    Mil Mi-40

The Mi-40 is a sort of ‘rotary-wing infantry fighting vehicle’ relying on the Mi-28’s rotor system and powerplant. The Mi-40 programme was first launched as early back as in 1983 to be suspended soon since the company went for the Mi-42 helicopter featuring the unconventional NOTAR concept to compensate the main rotor’s reactive torque. Due to the Soviet Union collapse and general economic crisis, the Mi-42 programme had to be cancelled. However, by then the Mi-28 combat helicopter had been built and passed many of its relevant tests. So, a decision was made to use its configuration for building an ‘aerial BMP’ (IFV) that was to replace the Mi-24 attack helicopter. With a crew of two, the Mi-40 will be able to haul eight assault troops in full gear, while carrying such organic weapons as automatic cannon, machineguns and ATGMs. According to the designers, the Mi-40’s unification with the Mi-28 is expected to reduce the time for its development and testing.

Proposed Mi-28 with enlarged fuselage containing cabin for eight troops, modified u/c in sponsons incorporating weapons hardpoints and additional lower fuselage barbette.

This is a mockup used in the videogame modification I work on:

There are a number of interesting articles regarding the RAAF’s air force decisions available at http://www.ausairpower.net/

In particular the pages for the F-35 and F-22

    These two were quite humourous…

Also found this publication of the original decision behind the F-35 being the fighter of choice: http://www.aspi.org.au/15690bigdeal/chapter06.html

It puts forawrd and shoots down each of the competitors to the JSF. The F-15E, F/A-18E/F, Rafale, Eurofighter, F-16 Block 60, F/A-22, JAS-39, SU-30M and a UCAV, either because they are not sophisticated enough, do not fit the designated role, are too costly, too controversial, or not developed enough.

    Enjoy 🙂

Agree that the F-22 would be a wiser investment, the Defence miister was saying on the news that we need to ensure our air superiority in the region is not compromised by continuing to fly older aircraft, and that we need to fly the most state of the art aircraft availible, the F-35. I would think that the F-22 would however hold this position 😉

The issues with getting the F-22 however, would I imagine be the same given by Israel recently, the US refusing to offer it for export, and the ridiculous price.

If we were to purchase the Raptors instead, chances are we would end up with a lot less than the planned 100 F-35’s.

There was a new google earth update yesterday, and as well as a new version, there is updated data.

Richmond AFB is now high res, and 15 C-130’s are visible, one airborne and taking flight.

There is also another aircraft in the north west, appears to be a commercial airliner?
