There was a Jane Fonda film in which a bunch of weirdo’s lived in a derelict Catalina in a sort of aviation trailer-park! Various bits lying around included the rear fuselage of a civil reg fire-bomber F7F Tigercat!!!
They ended up breaking into a museum hangar and attempting to steal an airworthy Catalina.
Can’t remember the name of the film.
One of the old b&w episodes of “The Avengers” featured Steed wandering around a deserted airfield on which was parked a Mosquito. Could have been RR233 at Hatfield or maybe RS712 at West Malling???
When “No.6” escapes from “The Village” in “The Prisoner” he is taken back in a two seat Meteor and when flying over the pilot ejects him – much to his chagrin. I think its one of the Martin-Baker examples.
Oh well – back to work!

Got any photos of the day?
About a dozen slides, one of each of the significant aircraft, plus B&W. Also took shots on several other visits. Want me to scan & post?
Nice to see her in the open. anyone know why she has ‘painted on’ windows on the fuselage? I’ve always found it curious.
The windows were sprayed over when she was camouflaged to represent Winston Churchill’s personal York during her days at Staverton with the Skyfame Museum.
I presume Cosford just painted in the windows rather than cleaning off the old paint.
Here she is at Staverton – 23rd April 1966 (Brownie 127 print)
G-AEZF
Coincidentally, I too was looking for another slide when I came across this one of the remains of G-AEZF. I took the photo at Southend on 27 May 1972, I was there representing “Aviation News” at the official opening of the Historic Aircraft Museum.
(The bod looking into the wreck is Peter Schofield – he gave me a lift home to East London that afternoon, miles out of his way, thanks Peter!)
Having looked at the film and looked at the photos that I took at that time I would say I’m pretty certain that this is the 1965 Coventry Air Display (& King’s Cup Air Race) which was held on 21 August that year.
The problem is that many of those mid-sixties displays were very similar in terms of the aircraft that showed up (a bit like today really!!)
If it was 1965 then the Hurricane was G-AMAU flown by Bill Bedford, the Hart was there too that year, whether the fact that it is not in the film is significant I don’t know!
That damned Buchon kept buzzing around my office all yesterday afternoon – really put me off my work! Pity we don’t have an Ack Ack battery!
I seem to recall a recent thread in which “Fluffy” said that Black 6 was actually restored to airworthy condition. The engine is inhibited and she could fly again if the policy was changed … although that is very unlikely.
Hi,
Really nice to see these old photos. What is the first aircraft?

Reminds me of my bedroom ceiling circa 1965
Just 1:1 instead of 1:72 scale!
There’s an interesting Pathe News film about the opening of the Aviation Gallery in 1963 on their website:
