Alex Henshaw
Couple of shots of Alex’s aircraft. The Active Mk I, taken at his private strip, and the Tomtit in its wartime markings – possibly taken at Castle Bromwich.
And don’t forget G-AIXN
Anyone know its current circumstances?
The Birmingham Terminal certainly fits, as does the nearby Airport Hotel. Glad to see the thread revived … I have photos of the original Chivenor/Barnstaple civil aerodrome hangars taken in the late 1970s. Anyone know if they are still there?
Fokker EIII repro in USA
Recent issue of “Air Classics” has a good illustrated feature on an EIII repro that has flown recently in California.
Built from a set of original plans which found their way to the USA after the Armistice.
Got it!
Kings Cup Air Race – July 8/9 1960.
All the aircraft shown in the shots took part that year – the Garland Bianchi Linnet (G-APNS) flown by Capt D.W.Phillips was the clincher.
1st … Turbulent G-APNZ, Sqdn Ldr John de Milt Severne, 109 mph
2nd .. Turbulent G-APZZ, C.P.Francis, 97.5 mph
3rd … Hawk Trainer III G-AIUA, W.H.Bailey, 133 mph
Proctor 3, G-AOGE, flown by K.B.Neely, is listed as “retired” – I think we know why!
Percy Blamire won the SBAC Challenge Trophy in his Bronze coloured Miles Gemini, G-ALZG at 170.25mph.
(Data from Peter Lewis’ “British Racing and Record-Breaking Aircraft”)
As an aside, Percy used two different types of propeller on the Gemini, he used to switch between the qualifying rounds and the Kings Cup in an effort to beat the handicappers!
The entrance road to the right of the pub has not been built yet, the runway is under construction and you can see the concrete bases have been laid for the three T2 hangars which were erected behind the four shown in the shot. These 3 were inhabited by the like of Ace Freighters (Connies & C-54s) and Executive Aviation (Herons & Doves) in the mid-1960s.
The ex-TCA Canadair C4’s have yet to arrive (and rot away gently).
I would assume that it was taken at the same time as the air racing shots in the other thread, in which case I would say it was the 1960 Kings Cup held at Baginton on 8-9 July.
Its Baginton – Kings Cup Air Race / National Air Races. I think you will find that G-ANZZ is rounding the pylon at Hunningham – my Dad (being cheap) always used to drive us out there to watch the racing rather than pay to go in. He used to say “They paid me to fly these when I was in the RAF – I’m not paying to go and see them now!”
Note Percy Blamire’s Baginton-based Gemini, G-ALZG.
The large black hangar in the background of the first shot is the AWA factory.
I digress!
I was at the 1967 Kings Cup Air Race at Tollerton, at the west end of the runway on my brothers Raliegh Blue Streak racing bike, ….
Ahh – the Raleigh “Blue Streak” … mine was a Raleigh “Redwing” … my current Kestrel 200Sci weighs half what the Redwing did!

A bit off-thread, sorry, I just got carried away … I love the smell of Carbon Fibre!
The centre of the roundel does look a bit green – you weren’t using Fujicolour at the time were you Gordon? 🙂
Roger Smith.
IIRC it was Kodak Ektachrome 64ASA – probably a combination of my scanner & PhotoShop! I have some more taken the same day … I’ll post when I have the time to scan & clean them.
Chivenor, 22 August 1969
A few from August 1969:
Wasn’t there a printed advert along those lines on the rear of the first edition of Les Hunt’s “Veteran & Vintage Aircraft”? I haven’t got a copy so can’t check.
Roger Smith.
Quite right Roger, I may still have my copy somewhere!
Sir Charles Masefield
Great to see the photos of the P-51D. I would agree that it looks like it was used in “The Mercenaries” which was also called “Dark of the sun”. From the few glimpses of it in the movie I thought it had Swedish roundels, which would tie in nicely with the UN presence, but since several guys remember the roundels and origin I’ll believe it. From the b/w film at britishpathe.com I just assumed N6356T wore British colors during the race. Nice to tie up loose ends though!
To the other part of my original question, does anyone know if Masefield is still alive?
T J
I think you will find that he is:
It was missing from its “usual” parking space at Mildenhall on Thursday.
I raced in the Southend on Sea Triathlon a few years ago and was surprised to find that the entire bike course was on private roads around Foulness. I had my mind on other things (like overtaking as many other competitors as I could) but couldn’t help but notice several aircraft wrecks strewn around – various Phantoms & Buccs in the main. I do distinctly recall the ex ETPS Phantom sitting in the long grass – but no TSR-2 bits I’m afraid!
Blue Angels at Bentwaters
I know it was May 1973 – the month I got married(!) – but I couldn’t resist slipping this shot in.
Somehow the Red Arrows have never been the same …..
