Duxford, 3rd August 1968
Jumped over the fence by the “Chateau” and ran in to take a few pictures in the “dispersal” area.
Nobody about … happy days!
G-AIDN, yellow scheme, Yeovilton Air Day c.1973

🙂
RAF Fairford
And there’s a U2 parked at Fairford (Lockheed not Malta Spitfire).
G-ALZK or G-ALYU?
See posts 15 and 16 here.

Thanks DGH & Flood
I note that Post 15 states that the Comet is “probably” G-ALYU. AJJ’s “British Civil Aircraft” states ‘ZK was dismantled at Hatfield, March 1957?
Can anybody positively identify the other Farnborough Comet 1s that were there in 1970 and confirm their fates? I know that G-ALYW was converted into the travelling “Nimrod” display unit (is it still around?), G-AOJT/F-BGBX went to Redifon Flight Simulators at Crawley – presumably to be converted into a Nimrod simulator (?) and of courseMAM got the other Air France one. I think another may have gone to Lasham for aerial trials???
G-AIDN
That’ll be the second yellow scheme Mark – shot at Yeovilton if I remember correctly – when based at Baginton. (Wasn’t around for the first one!) 🙂
I’ll scan when I get home.
BTW – I have a lovely shot of the Elmdon apron for the 1947 or 48 air races which shows both ‘IDN and ‘ISU – I’ll see if I can dig it out.
G-AIDN
An excuse to use my new 35mm scanner! (Not had time to sort out the dust spots yet but never mind)
Staverton circa 1965:
Abingdon BofB display circa 1970:
(I have the yellow scheme if anyone’s interested!)
Geoffrey Wickner’s Wicko Wizard
Wel Done Gentlemen – the Wicko Wizard it is. As Ron mentioned the Cabin Sports and James the Wicko Lion I’ve attached shots of each of them, together with Geoffrey Wickner’s hand-written caption to the back of the Wizard photograph. (I had a good deal of correspondence with him 20 years ago when I was publishing “Vintage Aircraft” magazine.
On the right track there James!
I’m afraid its not an Avian Monoplane – although I’ll agree it looks very like one. Maybe I made it a bit too difficult?
Here’s a clue – “Harry Potter would approve”
Could this be the answer?
Just found another reference to it – its a “Replika” alright!
Its been here before!
The Great Air Race – DVD
Thanks chaps. I remember that re-enactment of the air race now Was it a documentary, or was it a mini-series? Or were both made? I’m sure I saw a dramatised mini-series about it. May have wires crossed there, I might be thinking of A Thousand Skies about Kingsford Smith. I think the air race one had an Anson done up as a Boeing too, didn’t it?
I just noticed that “The Great Air Race” is available as a DVD on amazon.com (US site) – is it worth ordering?
Confused
The Science Museum is an ‘odd’ collection, and I dont think they would countenance having a replica!
Strange – I thought that the Wright Flyer was in the NASM, Washington DC, not South Kensington!
I thought that the Science Museum held the “National Aviation Collection” – or did it lose that title?
