RIP Frank, I remember him in ‘IASW’ too! It’s a phenomenon of the modern world that we all ‘know’ people like Frank Thornton et al through their TV and film work and when they pass we feel it.
Talking about getting old I was reading the other day that Eric Clapton is going to stop touring when he’s 70….in two years time…

Very sad to hear about this. Condolencies to the pilot’s family and friends. Please let’s not speculate on what went wrong, that’s for the AAIB and also to show some respect for the pilots family.
Can’t argue with what he says though, get all the exams done ASAP and get your head down with the flying. I did my PPL in about four months but that was with working full time as well (and British weather!) I had the money up front and just flew whenever I could, I did it in about the minimum time too. I’m convinced that flying as often as possible during your training period pays dividends in that it doesn’t cost as much in the long run.
I live about 7 miles from Waddo (about 4nm as the crow flies) and I have to say it’s the first aero team I’ve ever seen who orbited for another flypast from behind my house. I saw them the next day at the show and couldn’t believe how loose their show was. Not meaning that the formations weren’t tight or anything but they took ages to reform, unlike the Reds who do it all more or less stage front.
I’m connected with Waddo and you wouldn’t believe the rider the team arrive with……..it’s another world.
A proper Mew Gull, with the original canopy.
G-AEXF is still flying from Breighton. I know it’s been rebuilt etc blah but in essence and if you squint your eyes a bit it’s the same a/c that Alex Henshaw flew to the Cape.
Personally I’d like to see a Vickers Virginia flogging around the sky. My Dad used to go and watch them at Doncaster when he was a yoof.
There are numerous online ‘PPL confuser’ type sites now. Yes you have to pay but in the overall cost of a PPL it’s a drop in the ocean. I think they are around £25?
Have you done any of the other exams yet?
Much as I appreciate the skill involved in high tec aeros I think this is the epitome of having a good time.

Makes me doubly glad I fly from a military base. There’s no thought of any problems leaving a/c outside or cars unlocked. If anyone tried to get on they would have the choice of inspecting the wrong end of an automatic weapon or trying to convince one of our hairy alligators not to chew his arm completely off.
Besides being a steely eyed killer pilot (well we’ll forget the steely eyed killer bit…) I also play/teach guitar for a living and have some 44 years experience of stroking the strings vicar. If anyone wants any guitary type advice from classical to pointy metal beasty then drop me a PM, glad to help fellow aviators and aviation buffs.

I have a sneaky suspicion that it wasn’t an attempted landing. It looks to me like he just flew into the ground in a perfectly serviceable a/c. Easily done in those sort of conditions.
Coming up to mine soon, can hardly believe it.
Keep plugging away Mike. For what it’s worth no one has been doing much flying lately, certainly not up my neck of the woods. It’s either cloudbase to the deck or a good sky but howling winds.
I’ve flown twice this year and I reckon I probably get more time to fly than most.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
