    Check your meds.

He must have missed the last year of reports, this poster is still living in the 2012-13 period when this type of tripe was accepted. Funny thing happened, the F-35 went into squadron service and chicken littles were proven to be demonstrably wrong. Perhaps it is fitting this rant was added to a zombie thread resurrected.

Surprised to see the Su-35S has this capability.. Not a single one has been seen carrying wet bags, AFAIK..

Can’t imagine a current scenario where the Su-35 would need to. Massive internal fuel capacity. If the VKS ever expands it’s in flight refueling fleet, considering the range of the Su-27/34/35 fleet, they won’t need to resort to EFT’s.

Which brings up a question: any plans to make the legacy Su-27 models capable of in flight refueling?

Addendum to above discussion of F-4 Mig-21

US eval of Mig-21 compared to all US aircraft of Vietnam era from HAVE DOUGHNUT:

Thread has gone waaaayyyyy of the rails OT. But this is interesting.

In what timeframe did the Mig-23MLD happend?

The 4477th TES pilots much preferred the mig-21 to the Mig-23MS, which they regarded as unstable and dangerous. The MLD came at a time that the F-4E was being phased out of frontline service with the USAF as an air superiority fighter (though it continued to serve in the ANG, and US based USAF squadrons).

Unsuprisingly, F-4 is a better aircraft than MiG-21 in all circumstances; It has a radar that deserves the definition, has potent BVR capability, better WVR missiles. In terms of aerodynamics, F-4 actually has better sustained turn performance and climb rates, so it was actually a better dogfighter in trained hands, plus it was faster too.

All true in regard to the other parts. I think that US pilots might disagree on the F-4 being a better dogfighter. It had some really nasty flight characteristics at the edges of its maneuver envelope. The Mig-21 was altogether better (and more forgiving) at low speeds high AoA. F-4 was probably superior in the vertical. The F-4 had pretty poor sustained turn performance until the slatted “E”.

I’m talking about termynology. LM clearly describes Range as ~2*Radius, not Range = Radius.

I get what you are saying. L-M is using terminology “range” as ferry range. Not usually the case anymore.

And again, LM thinks otherwise: https://a855196877272cb14560-2a4fa819a63ddcc0c289f9457bc3ebab.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/13537/f35a_2.pdf

Use the latest actually observed combat radius from the most recent SAR report- 620+ nmi on the USAF mission profile.

The point of mentioning that there are design compromises to get the F-35B that affect the performance of the F-35A is that the F-35A would have had better performance (including range) had it been designed from the start solely for the needs of the air force & would then provide a better yardstick of what is now possible after 35 years of technological improvements.

While it is true that had each variant been optimized for each service, the “A” would likely be longer. The range of the F-35A would not change that much. Improved fineness ratio does not equate to lower subsonic drag: Transonic acceleration, sure. Supersonic persistence, sure.

yes Freddy: how can you come up with the very suggestion F-35 is more draggy than PAK-FA ?
sounds like heretic mischief to me !

Another expert eyeball aerodyamicist. Sorry, no. If you were comparing Cd at supersonic speeds, sure everyone would be in agreement. Looking at two aircraft and making a proclaimation about drag coefficient at subsonic speeds is a fools game. Don’t believe me? I’d be happy to give you a little test.

And considering your illustrious career on here of claiming b.s., don’t think your sarcasm is warranted.

It’s not just about engines, the soviets did not have CAD when the SU-27 was designed and the PAK FA has internal weapons bay that in stealth mode reduces drag/increases range. The air frame shape of the F-35 was compromised to get a STOVL version for the marines which was not good for range .

Ah, of course because supersonic drag is the same as subsonic drag on an airframe. Did you eyeball the total drag on both with that keen eye? So, what you are saying is that the clean airframe of the Pak-fa increases range, yet not on the F-35 for what reason exactly?

    F-35A combat radius?

The first was from the Norway briefing, the second from “L-M defends F-35 combat skills” or something to that sort.

Both are relatively old, the current 3i configuration for the F-35A is lighter. Fair to say that the F-35A’s combat radius for an air to air mission is in excess of 700 nmi. The combat radius on the USAF mission profile has bounced from: the planned 590, the estimate of 584, to the current 620+ nmi (with some altitude adjustment to mission profile).

So, was it 4 kills with A2A missiles + 23 with cannon on this sortie? Theoretically possible if the cannon were operational but it’s not yet, is it? In other words, this does sound like bunk (at least to me). Can anyone offer any explanation as to how the claim of 27 kills in a sortie could possibly be true?

Just as “red air” regenerates to get the most out of training sorties, so (most likely in this exercise) did simulated missile shots.

Not so much an unlimited magazine, but getting a replenshed load out flying back to a certain point or after an amount to time. Not trickery, getting the most training out of each sortie.

How do you guys even know this? Have Serbs ever claimed they had any information about flight routes in advance? Sure as hell I can’t remember them saying that.. Smells like BS and/or lame excuses if you ask me..

Have you ever read the interviews with Zoltan Dani? Or are you going with the “meh, I feel LO is a waste of time, so…..” There was two separate claims about intelligence gaps as well. One, that spotters were able to notify when strike groups were taking of (no so far fetched). Two, that the Serbs were able to decode some of the comms.

And spoiler alert, Dani said they observed the pattern of flights and set up his battery accordingly.

About the F-117 shoot down. I was under the impression that it only flew mission during night?
If that was the case, how would anyone beside USAF know the F117 mission route..

The F-117 mission planning apparently used the same ingress egress points several nights in a row. Don’t know if they were same navigation waypoints or trying to plan route with minimal radar coverage. A pattern was recognized and to make matters worse, takeoff times were noted as well.

Funny if anyone believe that for 10 years of Vietnam war US lost only 150 old planes, while in Iraq and Kosovo they lost dozens for months…from the same Veitnam-era SAMs. I have a strong feeling that someone is brainwashed by their own government.

Eye roll- we’ve all heard this one before. Easy job post a couple of pics of wreckage, some serial nos., anything at all to show “dozens of aircraft” downed over Kosovo. Or any addition to the already stated claims over Iraq.

Great thing about threse phantom shoot downs is its easy to track aircraft serials.
