Yesterday we went digging in 'the garden'…

…and found this.

Now I know it is pretty obvious what it is but any suggestions as to what it was attached to?

Cryptic note: ‘ZRX61’ this is probably a bit too stressful for you so perhaps best to pass on this one.

No worries – apologies if my reply seemed a bit OTT, I’m having a pedantry day today it would seem… 🙂

Grounded, I think that may be a little harsh. Of all the newest threads visible in my screen view right now, eight are questions or requests for more information / knowledge (although I grant you the ‘Whose going to be at Legends’ thread is getting a bit daft), six are threads which have been posted to provide us with news (including this one), and only one is downright daft, the Chav Jetstream thread.

In amongst the ‘genuine’ threads, there is a request for contact details for a Battle of Britain pilot, some ‘hot off the press’ news regarding a Battle recovery, same for recent images of a recently restored Hurricane, a headsup for an educational lecture…

Okay, we do allow ourselves to sometimes get a bit off the beaten track, but the underlying ethos of this forum is that it’s a place where we can all come to learn. All we need is an open mind. 🙂

Thank you Mark 12 for posting a little bit of sense on this forum, it was long overdue.

Sad story, though nice relic…..I was looking forward t posting the correct answer but sadly could not (work computer/net does not allow forum posts!!).
The spade grip being a AH2040 was/is Hurri/Swordfish/Battle type…never the type fitted to a Spitty…..A Typhoon would not have had an ally grip….was mag alloy (elektron!) and would have corroded to nothing. As would a Spitty grip…..cos other than the prototype they were all mag alloy.

Nice dig….nice Merlin too.

On a much more serious note.

The Battle of France.

A party of nine from the UK excavated the remains of Fairey Battle L5546 by hand over a period of two days at the village of Lamorande in Picardy commencing 28th June.

Operating with 12 Squadron, coded PH-U and based at Souge, the aircraft was shot down at 12.15 hrs. on the 8th of June 1940. The pilot F/O TFS Brereton baled out over Meigneux and was taken prisoner. The remaining crew Sgt JP Boddington and LAC CS Burt were both killed and are buried at the cemetery at Abbeville.

Although recorded as shot down by ground fire, the evidence of multiple bullet holes in the propellers suggests a shooting down by a fighter. One of the two blades recovered will be cleaned and locally inscribed and dedicated to the crew and then mounted for presentation to the Mayor, Monsieur Desperaux, at a planned ceremony later this year.

[QUOTE=Mark12]Bruce,

This is the part that will be with me at Legends.

A very interesting solution to balancing the de Havilland propeller.

I think I understand it but if you know the ‘full SP’ please educate us.

Mark

You mean you dug the remains of a Fairey Battle out of a French field just for THAT? :diablo:

is that corrosion or more probably a bullet hole on the prop? As with the wooden prop on the other thread, if u feel like it takes too much room in your house, feel free to ship it to me 😀
.. I’ll take the “non” echo as a reply…

Interesting

The brass gun button suggests early war; 1939-41 ish. I would guess it was a de Havilland metal propeller by the shape of the tip, How about something really esoteric like Westland Whirlwind?

So, were the cows (pardon, les vaches) saying “Le Moo”?

“Le ‘Moovee’ la Bataille d’ Angleterre est tres bon”.
