After many years I finally managed to photograph the London to Brighton veteran car run. After living just off the route for 11 years I always managed to miss it either through work or bad weather. Ironically I moved 2 weeks ago, but the weather looked so good I just had to go for it. After seeing the cars go through Croydon I went down to Brighton(I post these separately on another thread).

Well Jim. I could write a load more, but this is/was a thread about something joyous, the VCC Emancipation Run to Brighton, not the parlous state of my mental health.

Hmmm, Sort of puts me off him now, in a certain way, now knowing that Andy.
I too had a total breakdown, during the Miners strike, when everyone at our nick, about 20 of them, got called to the front line. I therefor had a terrible workload to carry out by myself, 15 hr days, and nights, and taking paperwork home to try and keep things on an even keel. Didn’t work, and after Orgreave, which I attended, T.S.H.T.F. and I was off for 4 Months with depression, so in a way, I can empathise with you, however, mine was only a short term length, but I wouldn’t want to go down that route again, for all the tea in China.Trouble is, that if you havn’t suffered that, it’s hard to understand.

Well Jim, by his own admission he was a Cocaine user for fifteen years. Then he makes a programme about depression–f*ck me, I’m surprised he’s got a brain left to be depressed with. My old Doctor (Dr Shah–who was brilliant) told me to lay off alcohol, tobacco and of course illegal drugs. Fortunately, I’ve never felt the need to use them. I’ve never been much of a drinker either, although I did use to enjoy a cigarette. I just think that he’s rather devalued a terrible situation for so many people. A point not missed by the reptiles who write the Daily Mail. By deduction therefore–all depressives must be ex-druggies–I’m not…!!!!

Andy, I remembered when I read your thread, didn’t he do a Lord Lucan, from a West End Play, or something like that?.
I didn’t see his 2 hr stint on depression, was it put on to help others who had depression, or was it a case of “Poor Me?”.
Never watched QI, so I can’t comment on that!!.
Got no time for folks who do drugs, not even if he/she was my best friend.

Only seen QI once and that was enough. I know why you don’t like it.
By: Andy in Beds - 7th November 2013 at 19:04
Two things Jim.
Firstly, he like me suffers from depression–very badly.
Unlike me, he made two hours of TV about his condition.
And further unlike me, he took a lot of funny chemicals when he was young–a sure way to exacerbate any mental illness.
I had a lot of sympathy for him at the time when I heard he was a sufferer, but I have a lot less sympathy if it’s partially self induced.
Oh, and that QI gets on my t*ts–a load of clever middle class boys trying to prove to the plebs how clever they are. Personally, I neither want it or need it.

I wouldn’t say no to a few hundred thousand – he wouldn’t miss it!!;)

Chas, I would jump at the chance of having his talents, (Even more so his money). I would bet that many more would also.

It’s only his JOB if he is offered the work. He probably need never work again, having become a millionaire nearly 30 years ago, so it’s not as though he needs the money, and by his own admission he is a workaholic. Those who continually offer him work are as much to blame, for lacking the paucity of imagination to use other presenters.
By: Lincoln 7 - 7th November 2013 at 09:20
What you have to remember though Chas, it’s his JOB, and everyone has a shelf life, so he is making the most of it whilst he can, you only just have to look and see how many actors are “Resting” at any given time, simply because there is no work for them.

Yes he is educated and bright and witty, no doubt about it. And I first came across him with Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson in the Footlights Review decades ago. Of the three, give me Hugh and Emma anytime. But I enjoy the changes being rung and he is everywhere – on TV, radio and print. You can get too much of a good thing and in his case, for me, it applies in spades. There are many other equally good if not better presenters.

He largely has that effect on me as well Charlie.
Just out of interest Andy, Why?.

It was the thought of Fry – always brings on a few yawns!:(
I think he is quite good, especially the prog he recently did about very little known facts about London.
Very educated man I.M.O.

Indeed, probably not despite the clues, particularly as he has always publicised the fact he drives a London taxi – or certainly used to. Also looking forward to your finishing line pictures.
Didn’t he do a series on TV travelling around the USA in a Black London Taxi?.

Oh, and your first picture is a very tidy Panhard et Levassor, driven here (and owned) by Nick mason of Pink Floyd.
As you original caption said (edited) and sorry.
