Can any of the mods or the webmaster elaborate on the sudden appearance of adverts, at the header, footer, and most annoyingly in between posts on threads?
Doesn’t help that they are from crap like Zoosk, Fishdating, or asking if I want to charter a global jet.
Very distracting, annoying, and so far slowing down thread loading.

Thanks for the update Simon and the chance to not look at adverts from the employer who decided that after almost 25 years that i was too experienced to keep on the payroll !

Thankyou Simon for that response from ‘up on high’. After the initial shenanigans I think things have settled down, and my connection isn’t being crippled like it was by the ads.

Hi – I know this thread is a little bit old now, but I wanted to offer a bit of an explanation on how this has come about.
Before I start, I work for Key as a Webmaster. Not THE Webmaster for the forums, but I am responsible for a lot of the sites that we produce.
I addition, I am also responsible for the adverts on this site.
Admittedly, we got it a bit wrong at the start with showing too many adverts. I think we’ve corrected it now. Indeed the only time adverts appear within threads is when you are not logged in (or registered). That was always the intention eventually, but – hands up – I messed up there.
With regards to a couple of other points raised, I’d like to take a moment to clarify our stance on things. Bear in mind that for various commercial and legal reasons, there are things I cannot say.
From Key’s point of view, the Forum is a free service provided to the Aviation Community. Certainly, we advertise our own products on here, but we have never sought to make a direct profit.
Certainly, we’ve paid for a dedicated server to host the increasing traffic on these forums for many years. In addition, we have paid for forum software, domain names and support staff to keep these forums going. All of these years you could argue that we were running at a loss. Quite a big one really.
(I’m not privvy to whether the editors get any content from here – so don’t ask!)
Unfortunately, there are on occasion legal issues that we do have to contend with, the details of which I obviously will not disclose here. However, with regards to the legality, the current UK system holds us partly responsible for all comments. We therefore can be seen by you guys as censoring ‘free speech’ when removing content. Believe me, it’s not that simple.
Certainly Key Publishing is doing well, with four new magazines this year, and all titles performing admirably. I’m very pleased to be working here, personally. However, anybody in a corporation knows that different budgets are for different projects. If you want to dig up analysis, people are going to say “well, we’re making money on these magazines over here, but losing on this forum over here. Let’s concentrate on the magazines and stop the forum.”
Fortunately we’re not like that.
We have introduced advertising on the forums to try to cover our costs. We hopefully are not bombarding you with too much, but we are looking to earn enough to cover the upkeep. I’m sorry to hear that some of you are blocking them.
With regards to the content of the adverts – the system we are using takes a bit of a while to ‘bed in’ and get used to the content. Hopefully the adverts are now a little less annoying.
Please do let us know if you are getting performance issues. Certainly some of these could have coincidentally been due to recent issues with Talk Talk, BT and/or Blackberry.
Rest assured that we do monitor the forum and consider your opinion; we’ve just all got very busy day jobs, and hence sometimes neglect the bedside manner.
Sorry this is a bit of a long and serious. Didn’t mean to be. Just wanted to keep you posted without (hopefully) fuelling any fires.
Take care, and I’ll hopefully keep you notified when other updates are imminent.

We are advised that as long as you are logged in, you wont see them anymore. Guests will see them as before.
That is exactly what went through my mind when I first saw the ads, it was like looking at a forum without being signed in, I had wondered if the settings were wrong.
Thanks Bruce for your taking up the issue and coming out with an answer.

😉 Just a thought – perhaps we all ought to click on at least one advert each day to generate some funds to help keep the Forum going!! 😀
Thats all well and good, but what would I be wanting with breast enlargement?
Oh….I dunno, though…!! 😀

Nice outcome – let the lurkers get the ads!!
Thank you to those who took the time to help resolve the issue! 🙂
Now to re-set the scripting settings!!

Well that sounds like a sensible and pragmatic resolution of the problem. Well done all!!:)

Is anyone else having major issues with them as they dont seem as prolific this morning? Only one add at the top of the forum and discussion thread not intermixed with the various posts like before?

Well, Knowing Kevs situation, I can understand why he has a comp that cost him what he could afford.
It can’t be as bad as this old machine, held together with araldite! I kid you not…
By: jeepman - 14th September 2011 at 11:21
Seems Key are clearly resourced enough to buy up Military Machines International and Brtiain at War Magazines, as well as start up Airfix Model World in the last 6 months so can’t be that short of funds. Seem a pretty big operation now

Can’t imagine that the adverts bring in that much income, but if they’re that short of money, ads at the top and bottom, but not in between would be a result
On the other hand the Forum probably works as a very cost effective news-gathering resource for Key – so perhaps it should be quid pro quo –
Edit: I’ve just downloaded adblock as I use Firefox – and no adverts. Is Adblock working – or have they gone anyway?

TV ads are easy to deal with. I don’t watch much commercial TV but when there is a programme I want to see I record it and then skip the ads when I watch it. Eezy peezy! Mind you if everyone did it that would be the end of commercial TV!!

Well, Knowing Kevs situation, I can understand why he has a comp that cost him what he could afford. We recently had probs on the forum, and my all singing dancing machine, (Which I still don’t know how to use it to it’s full potential) went on the blink, together with many other members comps. No one has a gun at my head and is forcing me to read the ads, but if it’s Keys way of getting a bit of revenue to keep the forums going, then go for it.
How do you feel about Tele ads, I watched a prog the other night, and the ads were 5 mins long, now that IS a good reason to moan, but how many have?.
All that concerns me, is that we have a damn good forum, lets keep it, whatever the cost. It’s not costing me anything, and I enjoy it.so whats the problem.
Jim.
