38 Soldiers sacked by Email. some 50 trainee pilots being axed from RAF Cranwell, Over 1000 jobs lost (Today) at a car windscreen Company, and we send India 1 Billion £s in aid. India is the second quickest growing Country in the world, and also the largest buyers of gold.
Should we be sending money like this to other Countries, or saving it and putting it back into our own economy?.

Many thanks, it’s all too easy, to misinterpretate what is sometimes posted, one person reads and accepts it, whilst the same article may be highly offensive to another.

to make it clear I did not single out your post for that, just some of the replies on the thread.
By: Lincoln 7 - 16th February 2011 at 08:28
No, you have a very valid point Lincoln. Of course India has poverty, that is a no debate question. Saying this, a country like India, or China will not say “no, thanks” to a billion quid! No developing country in their right mind would. Having said this, the Earth under India’s and China’s feet will not cave in if this aid is not given to them. As someone pointed out before, India is the second fastest growing economy in the world and China is well on its way to the top of the pyramid, hence they will take any extra gesture that they can just to speed up there own race.
It would appear that everyone seems to think I singled out India in this debate, I didn’t! it just happened to be headline news that day in particular.
To clarify things I should have stated every Country.

5.3% as of now…to be 5.8% by next year.
Thanks, Kabir – good to know that we are contributing to that, indirectly, while we destroy our own forces. Nice.

Meanwhile, here In the real world, direct grant aid to India is being replaced on a rolling basis by “pro-poor” private investment including through CDC, the state-owned development finance group.
For those of you who don’t know about CDC, they resemble a commercial fund so closely – including having their HQ in an offshore tax haven and paying their senior managers quite eye-watering salaries – that the difference could be seen as academic.
You’d be quite surprised at some of the things that CDC consider to be pro-poor investment, by the way.
Regular readers of Private Eye will know what I mean. The rest of you should do a little digging. 😉
“Ministry for Administrative Affairs”, PeeDee? No, mate.
The Ministry of Love, that’s more our style.
By: PeeDee - 16th February 2011 at 00:34
We need a coup. I keep saying it.
Get all the guns off the “Massive” and the “Brothers” and you’ve got a veritable arsenal.
Fly-hot totty as PM, I’ll take Home office.
The moderators can be the Ministry for administrative affairs.
Cameron’s latest yadda yadda about doing more charity etc. Cheeky git.
AND, he’s only recycling JFK “Ask not what America can do for you, but what you can do for America”. Thing is, the Americans really love their country, probably loved it more in JFK’s day. There was a desire to do for your country. Do you think UK citizens would consider the actual notion of doing “Something” for nothing to assist the nation? No. Because you know that it will be thrown in yer face.

The amount of ignorant swill that comes onto these forums sometimes bothers me no end. 😡
Get your facts correct, UK does not need to give aid to India. There is no treaty and no bilateral that compels Britain to give aid to India. Stop with the nonsense of ‘if they cant take care of the poor’. Britain’s aid had its own vested interests both socially and geopolitically.
Britain gave millions in aid to Singapore as well, must be one of those poor rag pickers on Orchard Road in their swish vehicles?
Britain has been giving ‘aid’ for decades, its nothing new. It did because it could, it was not in recession then and its economy used to be far more powerful than what it is at the moment. All they are doing now (hopefully) is realizing the current economics and back tracking on there aid related commitments specially to countries such as India and China (got in excess of 100 million pounds in 2010), which is fine and makes complete sense.
“The U.K. does not need to give aid to India,” This begs the question then, with respect, why don’t they give it back to us?.Who in their right minds would refuse a Billion quid, they sure wouldn’t have to force it down my throat. But there again, being an honest chap, I would politely say “Thank you” and hand it back, but Hey, thats just me.

Academic Rich, but it was on Todays news, obviously if it were in your town you would have known earlier than us others.
What a way to start a new year, lets hope another Company can
pick the tab up, and most, if not all get their jobs back.

Over 1000 jobs lost (Today) at a car windscreen Company
Yesterday, actually. A lot of people in my town had a really crap Valentines Day.
India should be left to its ownd evices. Just because their government/leaders can’t be bothered to pick up the tab for the poverty stricken of their country, we shouldn’t foot the bill.
They aren’t part of an Empire any more, and Britain doesn’t go propping up other bits of the globe to this extent. There’s a deal in there somewhere and it stinks.
I like this country a lot, but it reminds me of that lion that was in the Iraqi zoo. Right colour, right shape, but a shadow of its former magnificent self.
Britain is going down. 🙁

If you’ll allow a non-Brit to stick his nose in other’s people’s business…
With a growing economy, India should be able to prevent its own people from starving and other life threatning poverty.
Now preventing starvation doesn’t mean there won’t be poor people, or mean everyone in the country is living in a nice semi-detached with a new Audi in the drive.
And if people are indeed starving, I’d question some of India’s defense spending…like its nuclear program.
I think J.B. we can manage to make you an Honorary Brit, just for being on the forum so much.;)

Fly girl, When I was in Addenbrooks last Nov, the family of a 64 yrs old man were arguing with a surgeon and medical staff.
Apparently he was admitted with a badly infected toenail which was badly infected. No action was taken by the staff, so I am told, even dressings were not changed.
This man was also suffering from slightly more than minor dementure. The toenail had gone gangerine, spread up to his leg, and all the shouting was because the man was having a lucid moment when he realised he was about to be taken to theater, and he didn’t want to go, even though if left it could have killed him.
The staff were arguing the fact that his human rights would be infringed if they amputated, but it would kill him if they didn’t.
I left the care after my Op so I do not know the outcome of the gent.
But yes, the article you put up is 100% correct.

It does seem strange for UK to give out that kind of money as ‘aid’, specially when it has its own economic to deal with.
@J Boyle: I hope you are well aware of our geopolitical standing? (not connecting this to the overall subject of the thread)

But surly on pure humanitarian grounds, the ill and starving of another country deserve our help.
