A whole new level of PC

My girlfriend is a teacher and she has has just told me that teachers are no longer allowed to refer to dates as BC (as in in the year 43 BC) as it can cause offense to other faiths.

Its getting sillier by the day or am I over reacting?

I dont know whether it was the local educations authoritys fault of the Schools, however I will say that it was a rural area where ethnic minoritys really are minoritys.;)

I fail to see the relevance of the presence of otherwise of ethnic minorities.

In the absence of any supporting evidence or further information this blackboard business looks like just another one of those things that “everybody knows”.

I see.

Well, you can surely at least let us known whereabouts in the country this school is so that we can castigate the local education authority for their folly?

I am a big fan of anonimity, especially on the rare occasions I can spell it properly.;)

  They’ve always been there:confused: Are you suggesting that the native americans had some issues with reading the bible too much by the word, becouse otherwise your sentence doesent make any sense at all…

Much like some of yours my friend. Try to be a little more specific about who you are referring to. No offence intended.

Come on, you’re not normally this reticent.

Name and shame, so that we can express our opinions on this stupidity directly to those responsible. :diablo:

I don’t doubt for a moment that you have heard exactly this. But in which school did this take place, and when?

I’m fascinated by the speed with which urban legends like this become accepted fact.

I have heard the Black board thing as well, apparently at one point they were being called ‘chalk interfaces’ in at least one school.

Gollevainen and sealordlawrence, please consider your heads knocked together and continue your handbag fight by PM if you must.

That is all.

Thanks

It just one of those things that people knows. It was my aunty that told me cos shes a teacher.

Ah. So there’s no actual evidence of this, and no-one we can have a go at for it? Shame. 🙁

By the way, I just did a quick Internet search. Amazingly, there appear to be hundreds of firms quite openly selling blackboards. Someone ought to warn them before they get into trouble! 😮

…Another one is that they are no longer Black Bin Bags, there now meant to be called Refuse Sacks, or simply Bin Bags.

A quick examination of the appropriate shelves in any supermarket will demonstrate that this is, quite simply, rubbish.

You should rely a little more on your own eyes and ears and a little less on what other people tell you, mate. 😎

Deplorable!

Please quote your source for this, together with the name of the authority that is imposing this stupid stricture so that we can all express our disgust and anger at this lunacy directly to those responsible.

Or is it one of those things that “everyone knows”, rather like the famous EU Straight Banana and The Council That Banned Christmas? 😎

…I mean one of the things that annoys me is the fact that we cannot call it a Blackboard for fear of causing offence to coloured people, yet it is perfectly acceptable to call it a Whiteboard….

No you were not, your post appeared to be deliberately insulting to Americans and America, now you claim that was not your intention so either you are lying or you were not clear enough.

Nope. I wasen’t insulting americans, just fooling around with their expense. At least here where we understand humor there is a difference. I critizise, comment and underline unspoken stuff, and most often just trying to get other point of views getting spread. When someone is boasting with deathserious additute, I tend to do the exact opposite, tease with humour…makes me live longer..
But I don’t insult anyone, not even those who insults me. If you cannot take critism and humour otherway than as an insult, well again the proplem isen’t in me…

I agree that Political Correctness is getting sillier and sillier by the day. I mean one of the things that annoys me is the fact that we cannot call it a Blackboard for fear of causing offence to coloured people, yet it is perfectly acceptable to call it a Whiteboard! What is the difference? It seems that its OK to call it a Whiteboard, irrespective of wether it causes offence to White people or Not.

Switching from BC/AD to ‘before zero’ and ‘after zero’ makes perfect sense. Since this calender system is taken up by plenty of non-Christians and has become more or less universal, i think the terminology should follow suit and become universal as well.

Besides, with Christ appearantly born under the rule of Herod, that would mean that he was born no later than in the year 4 Before Zero. The BC/AD designation are inaccurate because them early Christians couldn’t count. And since Christ, if born at all, was most definately NOT born in the year zero, i guess the current calender system is neutral enough to be non-offensive to those not of the Christian faith. I know i’m not offended by being born in the year 1974 (although it a year as good as any for re-starting the calender).

I can’t help noticing that lots of people spend a lot of their time searching for stuff to be offended by. The anti-PC-crowd, islamists, all a bunch of thin-skinned nags.

The calender has always been wrong, turns out it took a while for Christians to get a grip of leap years.;)

I find it a little strange that the originator of this thread has not so far made any further contribution to it. Perhaps the political mayhem has frightened him off!
I would like to know who made this decree – the school governors? Or is the British government once again meddling, this time stirring the educational cauldron, as it seems to have been doing for quite a long time?
Having lived in Sweden for the last 30 years, there are some aspects of the UK that make me glad to be out of it! Although there are some peculiarities here that would make my hair stand on end, if I had any!
