we’ve had a thunderstorm this afternoon, and as i had nothing better to do, i decided to take photos of it to try and catch a shot of a lightning strike. failing that, i decided to film it instead, complete with sound.
i filmed about 30 mins of it, and when i looked at the film on the pc later on, i found this. this is just a frame from the film, sorry about the quality. is it a trick of the camera, or is this realy possible – red lightning – is it lightning?
and no, it hasn’t been ‘photoshop’d’
what do ya think?
thanks

I have around 15 mins max recording from the thunderstorm, although not from one single continuous video recording. i have recordings from other windows around the house. (i said around 30 mins, but hadn’t actually roughly added up the total duration of all the footage, and i also have 120 useless images showing nothing interesting, which i took simply by pressing the shutter button continuously until i got bored. i then hit on the idea of recording the storm by video).
When i recorded the bit in question, i wasn’t holding the camera perfectly steady, because i find it had to do so, and my hand was resting against the window frame – which wasn’t very comfortable. as i was recording i thought i saw something red around the area of the tree.
When i viewed the footage on the pc later on, it simply confirmed what i thought i had seen.
To try and show that it was not through a closed window, my window has ‘Tudor style lead lattice work’ across it, and if the window was closed, the picture below shows roughly what i would have got – complete with horse.
When i have broadband, i will upload the recordings somewhere, complete with sound, and I’ll post when i have on there.

Kev,
If you were actually there you would of noticed that there was equiptment below their feet as i wasnt the official photogrpaher there, if i had known you had a foot fettish then i would of maybe included the feet.
Thanks for the concern. My real ‘fettish’ is for correct spelling (FETISH) and grammar. ‘Would of’ really means nothing does it? It might be presumptious of me but I expect that you mean would have.
And by the way, if you look closely you will realise the bird’s head is behind the book cover.

Adam,
Firstly i didnt see the comment about leaving it running for 1/2 hour and if that really is a bolt of thunder then i am really am amazed. Could you upload the clip to a site?
Bolt of thunder
I guess this means one thing really, to make sure you carefully read what someone has said before jumping to conclusions.

Rick.
He says he had the camera recording for half an hour. My understanding is he caught it by accident.
“i filmed about 30 mins of it, and when i looked at the film on the pc later on, i found this. this is just a frame from the film, sorry about the quality. is a trick of the camera, or is this realy possible – red lightning – is it lightning?”
He didn’t even know he’d taken it. He hasn’t once suggested that he pinointed ‘a bolt and then got a central video shot.’ If you read he’s not even sure whether it’s lightning.
Now, unless you have any good reason for doubting his word, why don’t you let it go?
BTW, you have some nice shots in your album, but some of your wedding guests appear to have lost their feet?

i wasn’t filming through a window – the window was open, and the video shows that i was not filming through the window – you can see it open
Very Sorry M8Y but from the shot it looks like a reflection through a closed window
Still a good piccie though!!

It looks like it is a reflection of a bolt in the window you were filming through, used to get my storm pictures when I was in the carib by using time exposure at night with some spectacular results.

I would guess its done by a video editing programme called ALAM DV or sumfin like that.
i don’t have any video editing software like that. ive never heard of ALAM DV.

Most terrifing, abiet spectacular storms i’ve seen is in the Midwest USA 1997, and especially Florida in 2003!

Very interesting, I love being able to freeze video shots. I used to have an air rifle, and would set up things such as beer cans at the back of my garden. I would then set up my video camera pointing at the can, and from a distance shoot the can. I could then go and put it in slow motion on my computer and watch the bullet in stages, as it entered the can, and then sparks and other bits fly out the back. All you see with the normal eye is a slight wobble as the bullet hits it.
The best thunderstorms I saw were in Cuba. Silent thuderstorms…hours and hours of lightning and it was very rare you’d ever hear any thunder to go with it.
but some of your wedding guests appear to have lost their feet?
Hehe :p

well i am sorry – but how could you pinpoint a bolt and then get a central video shot. Practically impossible – i dont believe that is real.
Take a look at this page: http://www.geocities.com/~special_effect/glow_generator.html
Gives you some of the things AlamDV can do.

thanks riki. no really, its real. its not a photo – its from a film that i took with a digital camera
By: ricki429 - 24th June 2005 at 22:06
Of course its not real – being a part time photograher i would guess its done by a video editing programme called ALAM DV or sumfin like that.
With it being so close it would have either been bigger or there is no way someone could take a picture that close – you wouldnt be able to pinpoint a bolt like that. If need be i’l reproduce a replica.
The storms were bad though wernt they!!!

Highly interesting. Personally I love thunderstorms and used to sit outside of an evening and watch them if there were any in the vicinity when I was in Cyprus. That is a brilliant place to be if you like watching lightning.

That probably isn’t a lighting strike as such, Adam.
I agree with whalebone, it looks like a leader to me too.
Intentionally capturing them on camera is next to impossible, so that’s quite a rarity you’ve got there.
Not all leaders become fully-fledged lightning bolts – as the electrical “tension” between cloud and ground increases a number of these leaders are created but only one will close the circuit, as it were, and provide the path for the huge charge of the lightning bolt itself.

the field that it stikes is a horses paddock. if horses were on it at the time, would it have killed them if they were close enough?
Quite probably and it doesn’t take a direct hit. A ground strike can radiate sufficient charge to over 100 ft and do you serious damage, and the poor old dobbins wear metal shoes !

You and me both, Elgan.
Thank god someone else is with me on this one! :p
I know quite a few people, and none of um have Astraphobia except me!
Cheers for that Lance 🙂
