I’ve got a little problem. Mice are getting into my kitchen cupboards and helping themselves to my food. My cats have caught one of them (first useful thing they have done in 12 years and now they think they can put their feet up!) but I’m still getting raided. I’ve set two mousetraps bated with bread. The cheeky beggars are taking the bread without setting off the traps. Arrrrgggggghhhhhh! What next?

I think you’d better CATch up on some sleep
Wysiwg
“Canadian Black Diamond” cheese is the best,it’s so strong that once they’ve got it in their tiny lttle mouths it’ll probably blow their brains out.
Mind you, the mice round our way normally turn up with a plate of cream crackers and a bottle of port.
Hey! I just had a thought! can you play the flute??

RE: Help me catch my mouse
Hey Kev
Good idea
But watch out, cos if the aim is poor, we’d have a catastrophy on our hands….but if the aim is good then we’d give the mouse to the cat to eat, resulting in a Cathastrophy ?.
Sorry…long day at work.
cheers
Gary

Wysiwyg.
You’re a pilot, be imaginative. Now I was thinking about a radio controlled aircraft equipped with, oh, I don’t know, shall we say a 12g tungsten dart and a maglite torch. Give the little beggars a while to get used to the noise, keep your cats on guard duty and get them to call you for air support. Hours of fun for all the family.
You don’t think I’m taking this too seriously, do you?
Regards,
kev35

RE: Help me catch my mouse
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-11-02 AT 10:32 PM (GMT)]Update at 2220 hours.
Neither trap triggered during the day but both pieces of cheese have been taken by the enemy. New tactics now being employed, results will be reported after dawn. Still using ‘Horlicks Farm extra mature cheddar’ but now several smaller pieces on the trap so they have to make more attempts to get it all. Also, cheese is pushed onto the trap so they must exert more effort to remove it.
I’m feeling confidant about tonight.
PS older cat is on guard duty, younger cat is asleep with the wife in bed. Shift change probably around 2am.

A fact about Cheddar Cheese: It’s the most widely eaten cheese in the world and it’s a British invention…
…is cheese actually an invention or a creation? or both?

STOP PRESS…
Trap number 1 chalked up its first kill last night with a bit of help from the gourmet bate ‘Horlicks Farm extra mature cheddar’! The kill has been notched up on the side of the trap.

RE: Help me catch my mouse
I would reccomend closing up the gaps in your cupboards anyway… there are more things than mice that eat you know.
Unless your cupboards are made of the thinnest board known to man the mice probably are exploiting an existing gap rather than making their own, so your food should be safe if you can close them all.
Now is usually a bad time of the year for mice (I am assuming you are from the Northern Hemisphere and you are in Autumn), as the cold weather will tend to encourage field mice to seek shelter from the colder weather.
Blocking up holes in your cupboards is much easier than blocking up the holes in your whole house…

RE: Help me catch my mouse
Excellent responses. Thank you everybody, especially mixtec for the last one.
The bread was frankly a waste of time, I seemed to be providing dinner rather than catching any of the buggers. Tonight I am experimenting with Horlicks Farm extra mature cheddar. I can’t be bothered to go downstairs and close off three sides of the traps now so I’ll do that in the morning. I do like the idea of painting dead mice on the side of the traps!
Progress report coming tomorrow morning. Anyone want to buy mouse droppings, I’ve got loads of the stuff!

RE: Help me catch my mouse
Im an expert here. I once worked as a stockboy for a very busy fastfood place. Mice were litterally eating into entire racks of buns. I bought four mousetraps and in about 2 months time all my traps made tripple ace (I kept score by drawing tiny mice behind the traps). The trick is to surround the 3 sides of the trap with some kind of border leaving only the bussiness side open for the mouse to approach.

falls off the floor???
lol
anyways, I have been told the best mouse bait is chocolate……without a shadow of a doubt.
Find the holes and fill em with expanding foam, that’ll do the trick.
Funny as our mice/voles just used to eat bars of soap……..

RE: Help me catch my mouse
There is a …less destructive… solution, also: electrify all metallic parts you can (heating tubes, doorknobs, desks, chairs, …)
Ok, it couls also be harmful for you, but the house should withstand it. And the mice will already be b-b-cued! 🙂
