Indeed. In the case of the BMW (and all top class motors btw) the LED lights react a fraction of a second quicker to the application of brakes than the normal incandescent lightbulb. It is said that this quicker reaction allows those behind a little more time to react to the vehicle braking in front, thus reducing accidents. Also, the LEDs should theoretically never need replaced within the average lifetime of the vehicle.

I’m guessing that was also a reason for going LED on the 787, less maintenance, lower electrical current, etc.
