“It might be useful to remember that generally only the mid to high ranking officers and officials in the armed forces and the police are considered stalwarts from the authoritarian days, and thus loyals supporters of the pan-Blue camp, the vast majority of the 200,000 would be conscripts drafted or hired from the general population, and thus their vote would likely have reflected the larger bifuricated electorate. Same for the junior officers. How how many of the 200K would be of major and higher ranks?”
in an organisation such as the military, the views of the officers are very often passed onto the ‘grunts’ as the troops tend to (or rather are trained) to fully respect their superior officers, and that respect often also covers their views.
also, do remeber that the military has been teaching its troops about how china and taiwan should be united for decades now, and that teaching will count for alot even if it has been recently discontinued.

Haha, only mid to high officers… quess the 80%+ suport from NCOs up are now considered officers? The ROC military had always had a pro GMD culture from the top down. Even though CSB tried to change that for the last 4 years ( And Lee for the 4 years before that)… hehehe… then the fundermental question is why they are not able to vote hey?
News of ballot paper found in rubbish dumps, video of 10 YO girls voting in the election, supposedly sealed ballots open, voter registar book tampered… very mature and fair election that was

Not to mention the 200,000+ mainly pro blue police and military personnels that did not vote after they where called up on duty to maintain order after the “assasination”

However, given the immaturity and corrupt nature of the TWese democracy, I fully expect a thorough and expansive investigation would have uncovered a large number of illegal and quasi-legal irregularities, traced to both parties.

no-one was arguing abt what anyone say, cos from that crappy picture, could anyone really say when the whole appeared in the windscreen?
what is truely magical abt that bullet is what it managed to do. it managed to graze chen’s belly at the belly-button even though chen was facing the direction the bullet came from; the same bullet then somehow managed to graze the knee of lu and reture to chen.
this mangic nullet puts the kennedy bullet to shame.
what’s also amazing is how the thousands of chen suppoters and hundreds of security ppl along the roads saw absolutly nothing of the attacker or the weapon he used, and this is in the middle of a sunny day!

There can only be a fight if the US gets involved.
The PRC is counting on economic and cultural ties to bring to bind Taiwan over time. The DPP worries about the long term, especially when you have 5% of the Taiwanese population (1 million out of 20 m) already working and living in China and that figure is growing exponentially.
Chen and DPP doesn’t trust the Taiwanese military to fight for independence. He trusts the US military to fight for him.
The US stance had given him extraordinary powers if you think about it. How many other world leaders have the ability to bring the US military into a war on his behalf?
Americans should think closely about this: right after the assassination attempt, the first thing that Chen did was call on the National Security Act, which blocks about a quarter of a million Taiwanese military personnel from voting.
Why? Because the Taiwanese military is one of the traditional supporters of unification in spite of the recent purges.
There is every possibility that the US would be the one shouldering the entire fight for Taiwanese independence.
If the DPP declared independence unilaterally, I think there a real possibilty that large elements of the Taiwan military would simply switch sides. This happened in the Chinese civil war 1949.

That’s the six million dollar question isn’t it???
With that sweet $100 billion dollars plus annual trade surplus as
the carrot stick, I do believe China will simply let it slided. In fact, I believe China
will let almost anything slide and act as if she didn’t see anything.Same goes for the US. She too will be all talks and no action if and when it
comes to Taiwan because the colateral damages (US interest in China now supercedes US
interest in Taiwan) will be much too great for both parties to use as a wager. My take: Plenty of tit for tat lip services will be
traded between China and the west and, ironically, things will be to business
once again as if nothing has ever happened. These islanders, IMO, are betting heavily on this
“all talk no action” Chinese outcome!!! I mean what can China do when
it’s Chinese on one hand and Chinese on the other???Catch 22 anywhichway you roll the dice wouldn’t you agree????

The thing is that that Chinese might be biased on the subject, seeing that the Chinese (government) still consider Taiwan to be a part of China, something that Chen sees somewhat differently.
Obviously the only people who really have a say in this are the Taiwanese, not the Chinese, and anyone can guess what their choice would be.
So the expatriates should just be allowed to walk off with Chinese territory, and China has no right to take their stolen land back? I think not-China has every right to take back what was stolen from it.
Out of curiosity do you think the South should have been allwoed to seceds from the United States?
