Decal question…

Ah, i guess some of you gentlemen could help me here.

I recently got a pretty decent model of an 1:48 J-8II, but the decals which came with it (it’s a Trumpeter model) suck big time. Does anyone know of decent J-8II decals in this schale, preferably LtCdr Wang Wei’s Orion-ramming aircraft? I’d be very thankful for that!

Instead of that overpriced Tu-160,one could buy that 1/72 Armed B-52 kit from Academy minicraft and it costs a hell of a lot less.

I used to read “scale modeler” magazine.Some of the weathering jobs are really impressive.And ofcourse they do alot of scratch building like when they show open cowling views of the engine.One of these days if I can find someone who does top quality work,I want to pay them to do a FW-190D “dora 9” for a home/office decoration.

LAST EDITED ON 30-09-01 AT 02:42 PM (GMT)[p]there is the academy 1/48 mig 29ub, there is some rather obscure model of the su27, in 1/48 and i know they do it in two seater because i had one!! there is a resin cockpit kit for this model too, there is the italeri 1/48 rafale, i believe that it has just been released in the two seat version also, if not i think its not far off, the same goes for the eurofighter. italeri also do the F22 in 1/48, i dont know about the su37- think you might be out of luck there!! unless you can be arsed to go through the conversion of a su27

I’ve built over 50 of various scales. I got some rather large ones which gave my parents a bit of a fright when I hung them from my ceiling!!! I’ve built a 1:48 scale C-130, 1:48 B-1b, 1:72 B-52.

With me gone to university, I had a challenge of storing them in a cupboard without damaging them recently.

LAST EDITED ON 30-09-01 AT 01:04 PM (GMT)[p] Built atleast 60 scale models including Mig-27,mig-23,F-15,F-14,Tu-22M,Mig-21,Corsair,Apache,spitfire,jaguar etc as well as a number of ships including the USS eisenhower,Amazon class and Tirpitz,of which ~10 remain in good shape.My 1/48 F/A-18 quite resembles the company demo model.Unfortunately I screwed up my 1/48 Monogram Mustang.

However,I’ve never been able to get my hands on a 1/48 Mig-29 or 2 seat Su-27.The quality of plastic used in Airfix and Italeri is somewhat inferior to the plastic used in (revell)Monogram and Academy minicraft.The latter is by far the best quality.Are there Su-37,Typhoon,rafael and F-22 models yet?

LAST EDITED ON 30-09-01 AT 12:57 PM (GMT)[p]Up to the age of four I could take this stuff or leave it… right up until my parents took me to see HMS Invincible arrive home from the Falklands. And then that partwork War Machine came out, and that was it.
I’ve done 1/72nd aircraft, most recently an X-35B in RAF markings, but the big thing for me are 1/700 modern warships. Over the past 10 years I’ve built 17 modern CVs and CVNs and a load of escorts, ending up hundreds of the tiny aircraft and helicopters they give you. Just rebuilt the Fujimi ’50s Ark Royal to its last state, with the angled deck and steam catapults, so I could put a load of Extra-Dark Sea Grey F-4s on the deck. That was quite nice. 🙂

i do build scale models, am into 1/48, mainly all i have room for!!! i generally build WW2 prop aircraft and have a little penchant for luftwaffe, but i do build allsorts, have just finished revells 1/48 eagle- have to say it is very good and worth while the little money it costs-am hoping to get a skyray now frank! with the resin wing fold so it’ll fit in a box, have finished all sorts i couldnt comment on the number i have certainly not a thousand anyway~!!!!!! my father has basically the whole collection of airfix kits save a few airliners and a few that originally came out in bags, because of the price!!! its all his fault!!!!!!! funnily enuff i was never into hanging them from the ceiling!!!!! i am now moving into the RC electric scene, and am thinking on getting the funtec sky scooter to enter-but want one of those american single stick controllers to come with it!! it has v tail mixing i believe which will enable great possibilities in the future i hope!!!

yea, until college kicked in and then jobs….still got those two Tamiya Iowa battleships i have no time to build (Missouri and New Jersey(1980s)). and Mirage F-1, F-105, F-14D, F-15E, YF-23, Jaguar, Kunetsov, Piranha, M1A1, Linberg Fletcher Class DD (3ft long, but rather lacking in detail), Mig-29, F-18C, F-4 phantom, G91, Bronco, Su-27, Tornado ECR, ES-3 Shadow, Rafale, F-104, F106, Su-22, F-16, star wars X-wing, damn…didn’t realize i have this many models sitting there in boxes… Probably build ~100-200, don’t remember, because every time some little kid will come to my parent’s house (that’s where i keep them) take them out of the glass closet and chuck those planes across the room or rolled the tanks with their bare hand….or thinking a ship is a hammer…. :'(
damn…over 1000, that’s insane…but i used to be in love with those 144 scale, but it seems like the landing gears are always lacking in detail, so went back to either 72nd or 48th….and then this infactuation with building stuff that actually moves…RC aircraft….too bad i’m in love with electric and i’m a really crappy pilot(no time to train).
oh…my favorite was the B-1B model i have that have the ALCMs even on the external pylon…another tragedy…it was too long for shelf at the time, so my sister walked by and caught it’s nose, well, let’s say it didn’t survive a 6ft dive bombing mission and i hate rescuing damaged goods… :'( …the only perfect model is when you just finished it and NOBODY touches it…and then there’s the story of my 48th scale backfireC, well, its fate resembles the Lancer…and then my B-24G…man this is too much, i better stop before i go insane.
ever get the CG of a plastic model just right and chuck it as hard as you can? natural it DOES fly…usually it can only perform once…don’t worry, those are already the damaged goods…i know some sick people who actually stick D size rockets to the tailpipe…now that’s INSANE.

Else, the best i made are an A10 (52 TFW, Spangdahlem) and a F104 (31st Smaldeel (Tiger Sqn), Belgian Airorce)
The last is a SU32FN, and i have a TF104, a F4D Skyray, an Apache, and an X32 in progress. Other realisations will be a British Jag, an E2C, a SU22M4, and others, but i cannot recall which ones 😉

Hi there,

I’ve made throughout the years about 180 scale models, but I’ve made al kinds of things. First I build the most popular jets, historical planes and heli’s. When I was young (I’m now 18) I made scale models with all kinds of different scales. But since my 10th I made everything at the scale 1/72th.

But soon I was interested in special planes and helicopters.
So I have an MH-60 with special “Japan Sunrise” scheme, a German Tornado with tiger scheme, an F-100 Sabre with the “Stars and Stripes” a Dutch F-16 with an “Tigertail”.

And also one of my favorits is my Saab JA37 with the special “splinter camouflage” the typical Swedish paintscheme, it costed me about 2 days to paint it well!!!

I also built a impressive MH-53G Pave Low II in Dester Storm camouflage. Together with my UK Tornado in sand camouflage that’s my desert storm department 🙂

And because I’m from Holland I’ve got all the Dutch planes and helicopters.
The biggest scale model that I have is 1/72th B-52G. It has a wing span of 76cm! and the length of 63cm. And it’s hanging on the ceiling in my room.
