Auster Mk.III

Hello,

Can anyone please me with a picture of the Auster G-BUDL (c/n 458), former dutch airforce a/c (NX534, R-17)? Thanks!

I’ll let you off this time! Hasn’t G-OJVC reverted to its original registration now?

I think it is, judging by the rudder and engine exhaust, but the rear window doesn’t look quite right? The bottom sill looks a bit too high an angle, although that may be the angle the photo was taken playing tricks with the eye. Possibly a J/5 of some description (not an Autocar though), maybe an Aiglet?

Nope, definately a J1N Alfa, used to own one, it looks like a J1N, it smells like a J1N, it tastes like a J1N. Its?????????????? A J1N!

Yep it’s a Mk II, they have the pages for the Mk III and II mixed up, the page for the Auster III is here http://www.austerclub.org/taylorcraft/model_f_mkii.htm a nice photo of MT438, which of course is G-AREI

Edit – you’re right Auster Fan, the Mk II didn’t go into production because of a shortage of Lycoming engines, Lycoming engines were later used in the Mk IV and V

In fact it is a Mark III! This appears to be MZ105, which was originally built as a Mark III and then converted to the Mark II prototype, as shown here. It was later reconverted to Mark II status and then later sold to the RAAF as A11-1 – the first Mark III they purchased. Rather neatly brings us back to the original subject matter of the thread! (Thanks to the recent Barry Ketley book for the info).

Oddball MK.3 with a flat four in it though I guess the prototype markings tell a story.

I need to check the serial when I get home, but that looks suspiciously like a Mark II as the Mark III prototype, possibly(?) – although the Mark III had the Gipsy Major (the Mark II was basically a re-engined Mark I with a Lycoming, that wasn’t put into production IIRC) and ultimately extended side glazing.

Hello,
I’ve been lurking here for the past few weeks and have finally decided to register.
I’m looking for photos of the australian Mk.III Auster AII-8 showing more details of the color scheme and the history behind this example.
So far all I have seen is the artwork on the sword models box.
I’d be interested in seeing other examples of Mk.III’s as well as long as they aren’t camo or silver.
I’ve searched the web a bit,but haven’t come up with much.
cheers,
Dennis

What about this? Not exactly the same, but close………

Hello Dennis and welcome! Can’t find any more photos, but G-AHLK is alive and probably on a farm in the Midlands (U.K.). 🙂

Went flying at Eggesford yesterday (flew in a Mk.9 to Dunkeswell for lunch) and asked about the Mk.IIIs. Seems from what we can gather is, that based G-AREI is the only airworthy example here in the UK and the other (the registration escapes us) is under rebuild somewhere in the Midlands.

You might also wanty to try the Auster club site HERE , in particular the Heritage Group, who might be able to help.

As far as I can gather G-AREI is the only airworthy example in this country.

According to G-INFO theres two other Mk III’s left in the UK, as well as G-AREI at Eggesford. As far as i know, none of these two are flying, one is registered in Rutland, i think this is the same one slowly undergoing restoration at Leicester airport, also for sale for about £25K. Not sure about the other one though.

Shame there aren’t many Mk III’s left in the UK anymore, after the war most were bought by the Dutch and Aussies.

Not many Auster IIIs left here in UK. Here are my shots of G-ATAX at Sywell in July 76 in a red scheme and the same machine the following year in camouflage. In ’78 it was sold……to Australia as VH-KRL. Wonder what she looks like now?

Umm, taking my courage in my hands and now trying to upload a photo taken of Auster Mk.III G-AREI last month. If this doesnt work, I apologise and will try later.
