CFB Mountainview Pictures…

Here are a few pictures taken on my visit to CFB Mountainview Ontario this weekend. CFB Mountainview is used by the Canadian Air Force as a storage site for their retired Military Aircraft. Some airframes are still stored in the open while those with better futures are stored within the old base hangars. The only airframes that are currently stored outdoors are the Canadair CT-114 Tutors, Canadair CT-133 T-birds and Canadair CF-5 Freedom Fighters. In total I counted maybe 47 airframes outside. I believe some of the recently retired T-birds are kept in a state of what they call “flyable preservation” while the Tutors and the CF-5’s seem very unlikely to fly ever again…

In the various hangars I spotted at least one Buffalo, a handful of Kiowa Helicopters and many more Tutors and CF-5’s all looking a little more complete and flyable…

011 was pretty gutted..she had been fixed up with some kind electrical lighting system for some reason…a display perhaps..

Lot’s of parts were scattered in one area..I saw a couple of what looked like T-bird or Tutor hulks..actually they were sorta hard to recognize. I think I have one picture of one of them…and I don’t think I looked into the trailer…

Yes it was sitting on trolley near a set of good DH Buffalo wings…

Could it be 114011 or was it just painted to represent it?

Hi Gerry,

I am not associated with any museum at this time..I am however an aviation enthusiasts who wishes to own a piece of Canadian Military History..It would be for static display only and it will be stored indoors…but it sounds like they might not be interested to selling to non museum buyers at this time…but I hope they don’t scrap those that don’t find homes with museums…

Hello Peter and British canuck.

First may I ask what museums are you gents with? Second from what I understand Crown assets is offering 14 Tutors for a nominal bid to museums that are members of the CAPA organization. Our museum has entered a bid and hope to hear very soon of it’s success.

During my tenure in Moose Jaw I had taken several detail shots of a Tutor with the intension of putting together a pilot extrication presentation for the Fire Dept. I still have some of those pictures around if you’re interested.

Sincerely Gerry

Pretty much the colour scheme most were in when they were retired from Pilot training the 90’s…the Trenton Museum had their painted..silver and red…the polished silver wings would be a very nice touch but are way to hard to keep shiny in their climate

Here is a picture (not mine) of the scheme..

I always try to tread lightly and keep my distance. I wouldn’t want the areomodellers to lose what they have because of something I did!

I was pretty careful not to attract any unwanted attention…I wasn’t taking any big souvenirs this time!!..but I did notice that just seconds after leaving the base the Local Base MP’s did arrive…too late to catch me 🙂
