As a Christian, and probably as a human being, you should feel sorrow for someone so ignorant and stupid – and ignore them. In fact, as a Christian, you should forgive them for their stupidity.

…and apparently as a Christian if someone did that to my kids i should forgive and forget… but you just try it sunshine.

There are many things in life that can be forgiven, but in my eyes that is not one of them.!

Fair enough point. One doesn’t have to be a christian to be a kiddyfiddler. I might poke fun at belief, but I wouldn’t tar all christians with the paedophile brush.

By the way, I’m sinister too.

Your reaction perhaps exemplifies the point being made. Why should it cause you anguish to be criticised for your beliefs? If you truly believe, and I respect that you do, then does the criticism matter?

Err… no. Its more to do with us all being tared with the same brush by sweeping comments that touch a nerve, just as they would with any human being. If some sick perverted individuals decide to molest children, or beat their kids to a pulp.. then thats them… it is not me.
Likewise comments like nothing good ever comes from religion, or that we all believe that we are better than non believers really is pathetic and very short sighted.

Again i cannot and will not speak for others, but meet and get to know me first before condemning all of us and our beliefs.!

BB, you are the sort of Christian I, as an atheist, can live with ( metaphorically you understand), whereas Ryan seems to be of the more fundementalist persuasion, and seems less relaxed in his belief and more defensive in his exchanges.

I think it has been mentioned previously but I wouldn’t have thought that the true believer would be concerned with criticism. I imagine they would be comfortable with what they thought was right and without the need to justify the belief.

If they’re upset by criticism it probably means they either want to burn you as a heretic or can’t stand having to consider your argument, which might undermine their beliefs.

I gave up taking myself seriously years ago, seeing as nobody else did …

We Christians aren’t all a po-faced lot you know.Daughter showed me a tee-shirt in a catalogue yesterday that really cracked me up – it was a portrait of Jesus with His arms stretched out and ” B.R.B ” underneath.

Now we all know that there is discipline and excessive discipline. The above quote coupled with the one earlier in which Ryan stated that non believers NEEDED to be brainwashed only leads me to believe that he espouses Christianity at any price.

Actually, that statement of mine wasn’t made too carefully, mainly because I assumed that what I would consider non-coersive theological training would be considered brainwashing by you. My parents generally only disciplined me when there were good reasons and a need for obedience – like not crossing the road, being respectful of others, eating the food in front of me, etc… Not the kind of thing I think you’re now misconstruing me to mean.
In Proverbs it says: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Now that is a proverb and speaks in generalities, not a hard law, but the point is that you TRAIN, not force. Now to me, training is not coercion, but a method of proving and instilling a proper understanding, and hopefully the superiority of the thing you are training into someone. When I train my students to be pilots, I generally use a LOT of praise, positive example, and practice. Occasionally they try to kill me on landings or something, and then I exercise my authority for their good. I may verbally discipline them as well, but I almost never raise my voice, and I try to never take their actions personally. Also, “brainwashing” (depending a lot on how it is defined) can be a real problem, but some things that COULD be called brainwashing might be just good training. I REALLY want my flight students to think certain ways. If they think ANY other way, they will die at some point in their future career as a result of my poor training, so be careful not to lump all brainwashing in the “bad” category.

Blue 2 made an interesting comment about left handedness. My Mother had a very similar experience at school in the 1930’s. She was forced to write right handed under threat of punishment. That punishment consisted of being caned on her left hand every time she was seen with a pencil in it. So much so that the teachers told her they would keep hitting her on her left hand until she was unable to use it if she persisted. Is that Christianity? Is that a demonstration of God’s love? Or is nothing more than physical and emotional abuse?

You are RIGHT on this. If a child of mine showed a left handed tendency, I would not in any way punish them for it.

My suggestion is that Ryan would instill discipline by beatings Not because he is a Christian, but because he is a fundamentalist who wishes to impose his will on others at any cost.

You clearly misunderstand me and don’t know me very well. I know guys like you in my circle of friends who would think very differently of me than you do. Also, I don’t believe in “beatings” per-se. Proper spanking doesn’t damage you for more than about an hour and it does work. I’ve had it done to me and I’m not worse off for it. It should only be done by a parent if they can control their emotions and not over-react.

I’m sure those Christians who do beat their children will have found an excuse for their behaviour somewhere in the Bible.

The verses are in Proverbs if you want to look them up.

Ryan
