Culdrose – No Pics Yet – Sea Hawk

Burst her port tyre on landing after her display. No drama – pen-penultimate part of the show – so a short delay before SHAR departures, Typhoon and S&R displays.

Not sure of cause – but the tyre burst well down the runway, long after landing on – I had actually turned away (to see the continuing Sea Fury display).

Sea Fury diverted or, more likely, departed back to Yeovilton.

Over all, I would say a nice days flying – rather then spectacular (that’s not to say I didn’t appreciate any of it – I did, very much) – we really deserve a weekend show down here – so that we can get some of the other stars. What I’m really complaining about is what was missing – Hunters, for one and absolutely relevant to the Navy – but noticeable by it’s distinct absence – the Sea Vixen.

But to those that came “You all did very well”.

Now – where’s me aftersun lotion again!!! 😡

I seem to recall TFC’s P38 bursting a tyre at Mildenhall one year. 1995 perhaps? Took about 25 bods and a tractor to drag it back to the stand. I’ve got some photos of it at home in a shoebox somewhere… really ought to get that scanner plugged in some day…

Bye Steve, you don’t have to worry about that now – take care.

RIP.

I asked at the FAA Museum and one chap remarked – “she must be okay – flew over my house this morning”.

But not heard anything official.

I trust tyres, wheels, brakes, oleo’s etc are in reasonable supply?

I think historically is goes back to the fact that ‘change-over’ days for the tourists were Saturdays therefore if the displays were held on a Saturday the majority of tourists who were visiting the region would not be able to attend and that could have a significant effect on revenues for the various charities/funds that ultimately benefited from these displays

1 tourist ( me! ) did venture down on a Wednesday. Unfortunatly I didn’t know it was on until I heard about it on the radio while driving through, as it was about 5’ish I was to late. Could have gone down Tuesday night as well. 😡 Nevermind the dancing girls I’ve just stayed with for the last couple of nights made up for it!

Any news on the Sea Hawk? Hope everything is ok, they dont get much luck do they.

Ok – here are a few to be going on with. Not really a “historic” show, but there were a few points of interest: –

I think Mr Langham hit the nail on the head. There is little point holding the show in early/mid July – there are few tourists here at the moment.

There are some, but I can still drive to work and back in an hour and forty mins.

I live in Plymouth and am currently working in Camborne – near Redruth.

Must change my signature, which suggests something else at this time.

You’re absolutely correct but ‘CU’ airshows always used to be held on the last Wednesday in July – usually 26/27 etc – you get the picture. It is only in recent years the show has been brought forward (I think to get extra aircraft coming from Fairford – but I’m not 100% sure on that).

Most tourists are still at work, because the summer school holidays don’t start until this afternoon, except here in Leicestershire where we finished last week

Rob

Do you understand the reason why the Culdrose (and previously St Mawgan) shows are held midweek?

Hi RobAnt,

As an ex-Helstonian I was very interested in your thread. In fact my Dad (who still lives in Helston) was also at Culdrose yesterday and mentioned the Seahawk incident to me. He too thought it looked as if the brake had locked on eventually bursting the tyre.

Re your point about the mighty Sea Vixen, I too have thought that it has been quite conspicuous in it’s absence from several major airshows this year, particularly the classic jets airshow at Kemble – the very airshow you would expect it to attend! Perhaps it has something to do with the Red Bull sponsorship or perhaps they are just trying to conserve flying hours etc. Either way it has been sorely missed by me at least!

BTW – do you have any more pics from CU that you could post?

Cheers

Nick

Yes – but they need to be “processed” and I’m really quite pushed. I’ll see what I can do quickly – like the two above – which came straight off the camera and quickly resized and compressed.

I’m told that XE601 was down to display, but at the very last moment due to work commitments, the display pilot was called away.

Yep – that’s what happens with mid-week shows! Culdrose (or at least the people of the southwest) deserves better than a Wednesday – and it is likely to be the reason for so many other absences too.

The last time I saw an aircraft tyre burst (Phantom at N Weald) that too was well down the runway.

The cause then was the heavy braking.

Moggy

I remember a incident involing a Phantom at Biggin Hill where is burst a tyre too, Never seen any other Aircraft do it.
Hope it did not damage to the Sea hawk, As to the Sea Vixen i saw her at Southend and know she is booked for Biggin Hill, So shes still getting out and about.

There was one static – in raspberry ripple colours, or similar.

On checking – yes, she was there, but didn’t fly in the display.

Those must be Sky Blue Aviation colours? A JP in similar colours displayed.

Edit:

I’m talking rubbish, as usual – it was XW289:

For some reason I thought XE601 was displaying at Culdrose but, for the life of me, I can’t work out where I thought I’d read that. I take it ‘601 wasn’t there then?

Maybe the brake locked – but she didn’t swerve, or twist off the runway, or anything – at least not that I noticed.

(Would that be a ground loop? – Never quite sure what that means.)

Yes.

Ground loop is a circle, or part of a circle in a horizontal plane (As opposed to the vertical of the airborne loop) usually caused by a lapse in concentration when landing a taildragger
