Hi All,

Great day out! Thanks very much Ashley, you did a damn good job. I hope those of you who made the pub, afterwards, are not suffering to badly with the old head:p

Thanks to everyone involved,

dhfan,

The main bit that I know about is, surprise surprise, the terrain-following radar which is hled by the Museum of Flight at East Fortune and is on display on open days and airshows.

I know that the airframe at Shoeburyness range was burnt after being shot at numreous times, but am I right in thinking that there were rumours of small pieces still kicking about down there?

Ian, I think the main rumour about the mortal remains of TSR2 was Cranfield and Farnborough. Plus the access panel from XR222 at Newark.

Nothing confidential about it, Mike. Just keep reading the board until one comes up and invite yourself.

Rather than post numberous photos here, I’ve zipped up mine and placed them on the web server:

Make your own captions up.

DHFan,

Perhaps it’s worth starting a new thread about the TSR2 to see if you can get a list of where the various ‘bits’ are?

After myself and Kev saw that I wandered over to have a look at it. Seems to have come from Cranfield, (says Cranfield on it in big red letters), and it was a sawn-off slice of the rear fuselage, about a foot long. It was just long enough for the taileron and fin pivots. No wonder TSR2 was so fearsomely expensive, the number of components in that relatively small fragment was amaxing. I’ve read rumours before that there are lots of bits scattered around the country so there’s one to be going on with.

… and there was the horiz stabs from an F4 Phantom sitting in some sort of transport jig… why??? did someone at ARCo have a cunning plan to mate up the Chipmunk wings, Phantom tail, the assorted Jet Provost bits and the contra prop to make something…truely horrible?! yes some of the bits had ARC sprayed on them so i presume they were property of the Aircraft Restoration Company??

..I must also contratulate you all on showing great restraint in not driving over the radio controlled cars the nice policemen were playing with… err sorry I mean carrying out a training exercise with !!! 😀

Those 88’s were actually a bit smaller than I expected them to be… Not sure about most of the other stuff, but there were certainly a pair of Chipmunk wings (I was desperately trying to conjure up a cunning plan to lash them to the boot of my car and see if anyone missed them… 😀 )

Ta! When I get a new desk for my PC at home, I’ll knock a hole in and install it. A sizeable, neigh manly(!) throttle lever for a big engine. 🙂

That was me. Instructions for use:

1. Take it in your hand
2. Close eyes
3. Move hand slowly back and forth
4. Use imagination

😀

Seriously, I got it at the Tangmere aerojumble, the lever and grip/control unit as separate items. The latter may not be Hunter, but it fitted! No idea which airframe.

Highly educational, fun interesting, goose-bumpingly surreal with many, many other terms I can’t curentrly wax lyrical over. Perhaps my best day out at DX yet (i’ve only ever had three though!). I’d echo all of the above and additionally:

– Dezz, I got your VHS comp and have yet to play it Thanks for taking the time to write a letter (dezzgram) beforehand describing what it is.

– Moggy on form with chums Chris and Paul. Thanks for looking after me. :p

– whoever gave the Hunter throttle I won. Where did it come from and off what airframe? (sorry a bit sad but it’s been asked at work)

– whoever chose the Anglia film. First time I’ve seen Douglas Bader on camera. What a card!

Now what are the bits in car park on the northside? Besides two 88 guns, there were boxes of wooden crates, some opened expossing a contra-prop and CHT/Oil temp gauges. Shack spares mebbe?

When’s the next meet?

I’ll post my pics soon.

Lovely to put some more faces to some more names! (Even though Moggy C looks nothing like Neil Dudgeon really; pah, what a fraud!!!)

Thanks Ashley, top day out.

Sorry I didn’t stay for the pub but lack of sleep told me I should head home.

Look forward to the next one.

Peter

Bob…glad to hear you and Mrs Bob enjoyed the day, I am sure we could arrange something for you both to have another look round 🙂

Macky42…was good to meet you both on Sunday, and yes, those seats are uncomfortable, but they’re the originals so I don’t think there’s much chance of them being replaced!

Sorry you didn’t make it Willow, I did wonder if the railways were keeping you busy…but I am sure there will be other get-togethers 🙂

Glad you’re enjoying the fudge, Ashley. It was just to say thanks. Loads of Brownie points, my idea to get you chocs or similar. Didn’t help that I then forgot until Mrs DHFan reminded me on Saturday.
The archives were fascinating. Mrs DHFan wanted to stay in there forever.

No pic, I’m afraid. I remember peering over the wing of the P-40 while Lee was talking but I didn’t take it for some reason.

Right, Steve, that’s me looking in the Corsair cockpit. I’m not keen on ladders.
I was surprised how small the La-9 was. I got the impression it was much bigger when I saw it at Leg-ends.

Plotting has now started to work out how to have a plate of roadkill without having to stay awake for 2 hours to drive home afterwards.

Top day, good company.
